Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 Holy fuck. Holllllllllly fuck. That was buckets of fun.
Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 Mixed thoughts from MSIA & me, though I've only seen a handful of matches: - Yves is still complacent as fuck, and Ikemoto is still a huge fucking. - Ishida is little ball of wrestling pwn, which hopefully people will start realizing on a wider scale. Also, Rodoriguez still sucks, and still can't defend the guillotine 5 years later. - Pulver & Arai brought it, as is status quo for both guys lately. Kenji is gay, but almost garaunteed his maroon tights another go in BUSHIDO. Meanwhile, this fight probably gave Jens another overinflated view of his chances at 160lbs, so I throughly expect to see him crushed by a Top 15 level guy this year. - Azaredo at Chute Boxe as a whole are blatant cheaters who are finally getting called on their rope-grabbing ways, and Azaredo shows once again that he's not Top 10. Hansen still has little to no body control with his striking, but pulled a Heath Herring "Oh, that knee was supposed to be a high kick" win, and further perpetuates the myth that Hansen is a great striker. - Filho is still boring. Sorry man, but even in ADCC only Leozhino gets away with making positioning on the ground entertaining, and not even all the time. - Gono had some trouble with the Korean, but manages to take over, show him how it's done and avenge Kei's loss. - Well, if Silva stomping a whole in his head at 205lbs turned Yuki into an underachieving piece of crap, Baroni murdering him at 183lbs. should basically kill his career, while keeping Phil in the Top 15. - Henderson is getting old and useless, and basically holds no argument for being ahead on Franklin on the grand scale of middleweight rankings. He deserved the win with yet another late comeback, yet it doesn't change the fact that Misaki controlled 90% of the fight with no real gameplan (and no damage to show for it). - Aurelio basically exploits the fact that Gomi is the weakest Top 5 LW on his back, and shows how a now purely theoretical match against Shaolin would go. This fucks up the rankings to no end, as Aurelio wasn't even Top 10 before the bout, and isn't likely to stay very high if he keeps his level of competition up. Still, watching Gomi turn purple and Aurelio dig his chin into his eye was good for a laugh.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 Azeredo/Hansen was fun, Lei. Remember fun?
Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 Arai/Pulver was funner, with about a fourth of the flailing about. It also doesn't help that both guys have had much more entertaining and/or technically sound matches over the past year to which this one hardly compared to. MSIA had mentioned that this had the potential to be the ugliest ranking fight in a good while, and it certainly didn't dissapoint in that regard.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 It was still fun, but he's right. Still, Hansen is a great hybrid fighter. He's got skills and mixes them well, which is why you'd be hard pressed to see him choke or get upset like GOmi was. He's also real good at using the uncoordinated striking to get to the clinch. If he fights someone with really good, straight boxing though, I expect to see him get knocked out while going for the clinch ala Trigg/Sakurai.
Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 The thing is, Hansen's wild, open style both standing and on the ground make him vulnerable to good submission guys like Shaolin, or a good technical striker like Sakurai. But he has a number of natural qualities (long reach, slender build, KO power, hard punching from ANY position) and enough skills on the ground to pull out a win against almost anyone at lightweight. cameron chaos 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 Elevator into an Armbar Helicopter armbar, an elevator is a basic single butterfly hook sweep. Still was very impressive, I'm surprised he didn't finish with it. Then of course Azeredo basically finished himself by closing the distance to minimise the impact but ducking into the knee anyway. Apparently Filho didn't finish intentionally. It seems like Anderson Silva vs Lee Murray he wanted the fight to go long so he could do as much damage as he wanted since he was confident in his ability to win. Most entertaining strategy, no, but this was a grudge match so I can't blame the guy for wanting to take his time beating up Ninja. Kang's annihilation of Weir was a bit of a surprise, I expected it to be a bit more competitive. Hansen is an oddity. He's not spectacular at anything but he always manages to surprise his opponents and generally eke out a win. I'm looking forward to the Kawajiri match. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 KANG was great. He got off some sick shots on the ground there.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 *checks where Cameron is from* Yeah, makes sense that you'd overestimate Weir's chances there
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 Goddamn the finish to Hansen/Azeredo is fabulous. Hansen takes the liver kick and is all "No, fuck YOU" and throws down.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2006 Yeah I loved that ending too. Hansen is getting tagged for awhile than gets all Crocodile Dundee on Azerado. "You call that a kick? *Bang* That's a kick!"

cameron chaos 0 Report post Posted April 4, 2006 *checks where Cameron is from* Yeah, makes sense that you'd overestimate Weir's chances there He's got good striking but has never had great guard defense. I'd have liked him to have put in a good showing and I expected Kang to beat him, just not had hoped it might be more competitive.

Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted April 4, 2006 I tried to watch Hansen/Azeredo again and got a big red "This has been taken down due to copyright infringement." I think the dream is dead.

The Niggardly King 0 Report post Posted April 4, 2006 I would be happy if I watched Minowa beat up on a useless giant every show. Gomi lost... surreal moment, but a lot of my friends were saying that if Aurelio gets Gomi on his back, he'd be done. They were right.
Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted April 5, 2006 Substitute "Aurelio" with "anyone with top skills" and they'd still be right. Props to Marcus for timing the double perfectly.
