randomguy Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 A-Rod is good. He has his bad days but everyone does. As far as the US not playing well - the other teams are good! Baseball at the Major League level is very diverse. Much more so than basketball. The US team is probably under-performing but this is in no way comparable to basketball where the US pros should still be much much better. You know what is missing in baseball these days? Black americans. It's pretty interesting. Most teams have few if any black americans on them, and college teams are largely the same. Almost all the darker players on MLB teams come from Central/South America.
Shooting Star Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Nope. The top 2 teams in each group play each other in the SF's. This format was not created to give the US the advantage of playing none of the Hispanic teams until the final. Of course not. Actually considering the geographic locations of everywhere, the brackets were chosen pretty smart (Other than italy, south africa, and netherlands, they weren't going to win anyhow) All the latin teams WANT to play each other. That's BIG down there. If you take the usa (and maybe even mexico then) out of the bracket we're in, that makes it WAY too heavy on one side with quality teams (And it already is pretty heavy to the latin side) I think it's just fine, I mean the u.s. isn't even likely to MAKE the semifinals at this point. Yeah I don't know how seriously people are taking this up there in U.S.A but down here it's the biggest event ever. Dominicans wanted to at least defeat Venezuela even if we didn't make the finals. Specially now that Hugo Chavez is talking shit about us saying how Venezuela in a few years will take our place as the Spanish country with more baseball players.
Guest Princess Leena Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 It sucks this Korea-Japan game isn't on live. Sigh. Damn tennis.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 Fair warning that this thread may contain spoilers. Puerto Rico and Cuba are tied 1-1 in the fourth.
Kahran Ramsus Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Fair warning that this thread may contain spoilers. That should be expected.
Guest Princess Leena Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Korea-Nippon tied 0-0 after 1st inning.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 PR/Cuba is providing some good drama. Puerto Rico trails 4-3, but has two runners on in the 8th.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 Cuba defeats Puerto Rico 4-3 and advances to the semifinal. They will play the Dominicans at 3pm ET on Saturday, at Petco Park.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 Korea scores two runs in the top of the eighth, take a 2-0 lead.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 Still 2-0 through eight innings.
Guest Princess Leena Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Japan's best hitters coming up in the 9th, though. I'm sensing something big from Fukudome. He's due.
Guest Princess Leena Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Mishioka goes deep to start the bottom of the 9th. 2-1. I was one hitter off.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 I have tiebreaker scenarios figured out but I'm waiting for this game to end before announcing them.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 Japan has a runner on first with Takahiro Arai at the plate. One out, 2-1 Korea.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 Arai strikes out. Hitoshi Tamura up, two outs, one runner on. Tamura almost hit the first pitch out.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 Tamura strikes out. Koreans win 2-1, and earn a spot in the Semifinals.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 With that taken care of, here are the scenarios for tomorrow's game. (1)If the U.S. wins, they advance. (2)If Mexico wins 1-0, the U.S. still advances. (3)If Mexico wins a shutout game that goes 13 innings or longer, Mexico advances. (4)If Mexico wins by any other score, Japan advances. (5)If the game ends in a tie, the U.S. advances.
Bored Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 So potentially there could be a final between Korea and Cuba. Just a hunch that's not what Selig had in mind when he came up with this idea. According to ESPN the U.S. is almost virtually a lock to advance by tiebreak even if they lose to Mexico. Woo hoo back in and advance!
USC Wuz Robbed! Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 USA finds a way to stay alive by circumstance!
Guest Vitamin X Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 Cuba defeats Puerto Rico 4-3 and advances to the semifinal. They will play the Dominicans at 3pm ET on Saturday, at Petco Park. Fuckin A, YES!!! VIVA CUBA~ Good luck against that nasty DR squad, though. I wouldn't be surprised to see DR win, no matter how much I'm pulling for Cuba.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 17, 2006 Author Report Posted March 17, 2006 Mexico has been eliminated because they scored a run.
Guest Princess Leena Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 Because they allowed too many runs in other games, and their only possibility for making the next round was an extra inning shutout to boost their least runs per 9 inning stat. Anyway, lose USA.
Shooting Star Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 So does that mean that Japan is going instead of U.S.A?
Guest Smues Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 Griffey strikes out and we're 2 outs away from being eliminated. Sad. Chipper just walked, which an optimist would say is good, but me being the pessimist just assumes that means a-rod will ground into a DP.
mike546 Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 I want the U.S to win but even as a Yankee fan something inside me wants A-Rod to hit into a DP.
