EricMM 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 Schism was also one of the worst songs off of that album, to me pleasure, since that song as a single didn't thrill me. To be honest this new one sounds a LOT like schism as well. I hope it'll be a good album though, I'm sure to... "get" it. Somehow. If it wows me I'll definitely get it, I have all of TOOL's other stuff.
The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 Yeah, because Tool was just ripping up the music scene in 2002. Lateralus wasn't exactly an industry-shaking event. It went double platinum, that right there is the definition of mainstream relevance. Yeah, and so did O-Town's self-titled debut. Lateralus took six months to go platinum and a whopping two years to reach its double platinum status. "Schism" was the only top ten modern rock single from the album, and it didn't even crack the Billboard Top 50. I realize that it made No.1 on the Billboard albums list upon its release, but I don't really lend a lot of credence to that, especially considering that the band had half of a decade to build up interest in the release. And, once again, the radio airplay for the album was weaker than it was for Aenima, where "Stinkfist", the title track, and "Forty-Six and 2" made their way into regular rotation. It just doesn't strike me as a landmark release.
Carnival 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 i dare somebody to defend the lyrics, trying to make watching death on tv sound all cool and shit ("i like to watch things DIEEEEEEEEE") while acting heady & above it at the same time, like some horror movie that tries to teach you to be kind to women. Ummm...... This isn't the first song to be written sarcasticly from a first person view of something the artist is against.
godthedog 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2006 i know that the point of the song is to be sarcastic, but it doesn't work. you need at least a little bit of irony, some sort of difference between a literal meaning and an implied meaning. almost everything in the lyrics is completely literal, and the "ironic" lines are so easy and cliche that they might as well be literal ("it's no fun till someone dies"). if you want to tell me that i am addicted to violence on tv and you want to be ironic about it, bring it out between the lines somehow. don't just tell me "stare like a junkie into the TV, stare like a zombie," cause then you sound like my mother. Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2006 Corey I'm not going to quote you, cuz its right above, however... I have absolutely NO idea why you chose to quote my response in yours... Not once do you actually reply to anything I say, instead you just go off on this huge rambling tirade on how they're being compared to the Beatles and frickin Chuck Berry??? I don't know how saying that they don't suck, somehow makes me compare them to the greatest musicians of all time. Basically my biggest point was they don't "suck" and you agreed with me... after what was the most Bi-Polar response to any post I've seen anywhere on the internet. Because the gist of your reply that I quoted was that, and I quote, "Tool...is filled to the brim with at the very least talent." The ellipsis was for a comma and a space, just so you don't think I'm overlooking some much needed part of your post. My point was that Tool fans generally hype up the abilities of Adam, Danny, and Justin to the point where you would think they equate Adam with Steve Vai or Jimmy Page, and Justin with Les Claypool or John Myung. Adam and Justin are responsible for the actual feel of the music while Danny - the only truly musically talented member of the band - is responsible for the timing and rhythm of the song. And Adam and Justin are about on the same level as your average underground Japanese thrash band in that they're simplistic players that can play in odd timing. It annoys me that people - a lot of which consider themselves "rock experts" (note: I'm not saying you yourself claimed to be one, I'm talking about the majority of Tool fans I've met) - say they're these incredible musicians when, really, they're no better than half of the bands I listen to (and remember, I'm the "thrash/hardcore" kid of the TSM metalheads, the styles of heavy music that take the least bit of musical talent to play...besides nu-metal and emo, which are jokes in and of themselves, but that's another thread). That's what got me into the tirade about Maynard's lyrics and how he just seems to pick the largest word out of the thesaurus, but hey. I do like Tool, I might see them when they come to the Orpheum in Boston on May 21st, but that depends on who they have as supporting acts. I would be immensely bored if I were to see Tool live (much like how I get incredibly fucking bored when I see Opeth live, but they always seem to have a band I really like touring with them so I always get stuck seeing them). UZI Suicide 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2006 Their last single, "Schism", was a lengthy progfest that even dedicated modern rock stations flinched at playing with any regularity. Not exactly Top 40 material, or even "46 and 2" or "Sober" or any of Tool's more popular singles. At their peak, Tool catered to a gleefully devoted niche of metal fans, not really bothering with self-promotion other than those kooky music videos - and that peak is long gone. "Schism" is their most played single to date, it reached #2 on the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts, and is their only single to get into the Billboard Hot 100. But really, what does radio play matter? They're still one of the more popular bands around today, with millions of fans, and are a huge influence to more bands than I care to name. Their albums are pretty much guarenteed to go double or triple platinum. And your "Well O-Town went double platinum" stuff is fucking retarded, considering they came out right at the peak of the boy band craze, had a ton of radio play, and had the MTV hype machine putting them all over the channel 24/7, it would have been a near impossibility for them not to go at least double platinum. Their albums are pretty much guarenteed to go double or triple platinum. Please tell me some of these bands, because the only ones I can think of are Chevelle (their debut album, which sounded like a bunch of bad Tool covers) and local band Broken (who are fucking terrible). IMO, the best thing Maynard's ever been attached to musically has been Green Jelly.
EricMM 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2006 I still nominate that TOOL wouldn't get so much hate if they didn't get so much love first. People need to ignore the lovers so we wouldn't have so much hate. They're a fine band.
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2006 They are a fine band. I agree with that (I think every post but the pro-Green Jelly/anti-Tool influenced bands one I've made in this thread have said that I like Tool). I just think that the majority of their fanbase needs to shut the fuck up and either LEARN stuff about music or stop getting high and try to listen to the music. Everything sounds better stoned. That's why Phish has a fanbase.

It's funny 'cause its true. But I love Tool. Where I gre up, nobody had heard of them, and we heard Shizm at a party one night, and we all been listening to the sinse. So I really didn't have all this outside influence on Tool, I guess that's thr eason I like Nickelback, I don't pay attention to rock new, much I hit up Metal sludge, but that shit's just brilliant. Now hi-hop I know any and every fucking thing you could want to know. I'm addicted to the culture, I grew up in it, I live it. But I listen to damn near everything. And,uh,yeah... Tool and stuff, carry on.

Yeah, it's the episode "What to Think" and the sketch is "'Globo-Chem' Advertising Presentation featuring 'Pit-Pat' the Pansexual Spokescreature" Yeah, I found it. I'm working on memorizing Season 4 dialogue now. "No, I never dated Crystal Knockers. She's a porn star. We were both in this blowjob competition." "Who was that?" "Oh that's Crystal's boyfriend. He's just mad because I beat her in the blowjob competition." "...you GAVE people blowjobs?" "The MOST people! That's why they have a drink named after me here." "They have a drink called the Todd Hindley?" "No, it's called the Ultimate Dicksucker."
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2006 Am I the only one who still thinks Undertow is Tool's best album? Opiate is cool but as an EP it's hard to really consider it their best album (it's also not representative of their style since). I've never quite gotten the love for Aenima. I just find it a badly produced album that is very muddy sounding and outside of the well known singles there really isn't much there. Lateralus was an album I thought really sucked when I first heard it, but I have since warmed up to it. At first I found it way too long, full of aimless songs that run 8 minutes without doing anything for half of that run time. Of course I also listened to it often around the time of Sept. 11, so maybe that says something about the frame of mind one needs to be in to enjoy Tool. Guest Felonies! Sideburnious 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2006 He was in a few episodes wasn't he? And apart from the first single, have many people heard the rest of the album yet? I've been listening it to the last couple of days. It's good, but I wouldn't pass final judgement on it yet. I'm sure there will be plenty more "It's shit" "No it's excellent" discussion though. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted April 27, 2006 I discussed this with the local music store guy prior to the song's released.
