Ensberg homered in his 6th straight game, breaking the previous Astros record of 5 straight set by Carlos Beltran and some other people. He also leads the NL in average. 2nd year rookie Wandy Rodriguez is looking sharp. He's now 3-0 with a 2.5 ERA. Preston Wilson only struck out once tonite after striking out 11 times in 3 games with the Brewers. Phil Garner got ejected in the first after homeplate ump Rick Reed literally took his mask off and jogged to the pitcher's mound to tell off Wandy after he thought he was trying to show him up. Tomorrow nite, we've got another youngin' going, Taylor Buchholz. If he does as well as he looks like he will, we should have a Major League leading record of 12-5 after tomorrow. I'm trying not to get too excited after less than 20 games, but if the 'Stros keep up like they are and #22 makes his glorious return in June, I could see us winning the division. There were a ton of borderline calls that went the Yankees way and some that went the O's way (inlcuding the final third strike). It is baseball. Bad calls happen. Tonight there was an inconsistant umpire behind the plate. To act like the last call on Matsui cost the Yankees the game and/or was the only bad call of the night is ridiculous. There were a ton of borderline calls that went the Yankees way and some that went the O's way (inlcuding the final third strike). It is baseball. Bad calls happen. Tonight there was an inconsistant umpire behind the plate. To act like the last call on Matsui cost the Yankees the game and/or was the only bad call of the night is ridiculous. At least 2 out of the 3 strikes called against Hideki were balls. He should have protected the plate on the last pitch which was another ball. Melvin Mora or Tejeda or whoever the fuck that slid into first base was out. That lead to 3 runs in that inning coupled with the fact that Wang was inconsistent. Bad calls galore with bad situational hitting and inconsistent pitching lead to the Yankees loss. The homeplate and first base umpire certaintly didnt help. The Mets have already used every other reliever they've got and it's approaching 2 AM in NY. Pedro's not going 9 tomorrow, and I shudder to think how bad things will get if Jorge has to pitch 2 or 3 innings in that one. Burnett on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right elbow injury. Burnett left his start against Boston on Friday night after four innings with soreness in his elbow. He will visit Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday. Andrews performed ligament replacement surgery on Burnett's elbow in 2003. Burnett, who signed a five-year, $55 million deal with the Blue Jays in the offseason after spending seven seasons with the Florida Marlins, began the season on the DL after scar tissue broke off in his elbow March 18 during spring training. The Blue Jays are hoping it's just scar tissue this time, too. "They don't seem to think it's anything structurally wrong," manager John Gibbons said. "He'll go see the guy who did the surgery. Hopefully, he'll get some reassurance from him. Until he sees him we won't know." Burnett was a key piece of Toronto's offseason overhaul. The Blue Jays also added closer B.J. Ryan for $47 million over five years, signed catcher Bengie Molina and traded for slugger Troy Glaus and first baseman Lyle Overbay. Pitching coach Brad Arnsberg noticed a drop in velocity in Burnett's start on Friday. "All of a sudden his velocity tapered," Arnsberg said. "I knew something wasn't right." Arnsberg said they'll be extra careful with him. "You've got to guard him with kid gloves. We did that the first time and felt good," Arnsberg said. This just opens up first and allows them to walk Todd Walker to set up the doubleplay for Aramis. He got a run in with a groundout, but in the end, that's all they got. It's hard to believe in 5 seasons he's never finished lower than 4th in the voting and that he might be running with 3 straight already (or at worst 3 of the last 4) if not for Bonds. Unfortunately there's this heavy misconception, thanks to recent WS winners, that whenever you have the chance to give away one of your 27 outs in the name of advancing a runner to the next base, you absolutely should. Yeah, I don't know why you'd waste an out to score FEWER runs. Looking at the variance on those numbers would be interesting. I'd suspect your odds of scoring at least one run would be higher with 2nd and 3rd/1 out, which would make it preferable to 1st and 2nd/0 out in tie games late, but I have no idea why anyone would do it in the third inning. It takes a lot of veteran presence to saunter to the plate for at-bat after precious at-bat, each time looking like you'd have problems driving a ball off of a tee, let alone a major league pitcher.
