Lacuna Coil

Recommended Posts

I was directed to a cover version of Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy The Silence' by these guys and I really liked it, so I had a look around and downloaded their album... I don't normally listen to this sort of stuff, but needless to say I was quite impressed and I really enjoyed the album. Some people might be a bit turned off cause they do remind me of Evanescence, but there are some really good songs on the album. It's called 'Karmacode'

Any thoughts?

Lacuna Coil was around for at least 5 or 6 years before Evanescense, so that's why. Plus, the whole "female-fronted gothic hard rock band" thing has been around since the early 80's.

My favorite Lacuna Coil song is "To Live Is To Hide," and it's also the only song by them I can really stand anymore. "Heaven's A Lie" isn't that bad, but most of their stuff is kinda grating. That said, Christina Scabbia has an amazing voice and is SSSSSSSSMOKIN' hot.

Also, check out The Gathering and Theatre of Tragedy. I'm a bigger Theatre of Tragedy fan than I am of The Gathering or Lacuna Coil, but they're basically a more ambient, and a heavier, version of the gothic metal/gothic rock style. Two vocalists - one male who alternates between death metal-style growls and this haunting robotic voice (which actually has very little digital effects put on it, save for when its obvious), and the other is a female operatic-style singer - and some good, chilling music that is at times creepy and other times good to dance to.

Laz pretty much nailed it on the head. If you like them PK, then go spend $50 bucks to see them on the main stage at Ozzfest.

I saw them a couple years back in between Ozzfest shows in a smaller club and they were fantastic. They seem to be a band more suited for the smaller clubs, rather then the big arena/theatres (as most rock bands are).

Here's some pictures of Scabbia, since that's pretty much the best thing bout LC

the male vocals are what kills it for this group, IMO, because Scabbia has a great voice...better, dare I say, than Amy Lee's.

Being hella fine doesn't hurt either.

I would urge you not to spend the money and see them. They do not transition well to the live stage.

That being said, go listen to some Nightwish if you want to listen to a female gothic chick metal band.

From what I have heard of Lacuna Coil, I like them. Not enough to rush out to get an album.

Based on what I have heard of LC and what I have heard of Evanescence, I prefer Evanescence.

Since we're namedropping female fronted metal bands, what does everyone think of Sinergy?

I think they're ok. I like how the chick sings and not growls.

Their music has some weird quality to it that turns me off. I can't quite put it into words, it's just some similar sound that a lot of their songs have. The group is alright, I just don't dig them a whole lot, despite being a huge mark for female vocal gothic metal. I also don't think the vocals are up to snuff compared to say, Tarja Turunen or Sharon Den Adel.

re: Sinergy: Upload some :D

And since we're on the topic, anyone think they could give me the name of the song/artist in this video? It sounds like Epica to me, but I don't really know, and I don't know the song.

Oh hell yes. It's good to see that theres another Nightwish fan here. I had never heard of them until a friend of mine showed me their video for "I Wish I Had an Angel' back in 2004, and I've been hooked ever since. Their (now former) vocalist was a SMOKIN hot girl named Tarja, who was apparently a clasically-trained opera singer. This is as close to a perfect band as I have found because I have yet to hear a song from them that I didn't like. Their backup singer Marco, who looks like a modern-day Viking and has some of the most impressive vocals from a male that I have ever heard, has a side-band called Tarot if you can track down any of their material. "Suffer Our Pleasure" is my favorite album from Tarot, but "Do You Wanna Live Forever" has some good material as well. Some good Nightwish songs to track down are Nemo, She is my Sin, Ghost Love Score, and Planet Hell. Could anyone provide me with bass tabs to their song, Planet Hell? They are impossible to find online.

On the subject of Lacuna Coil though, I have greatly enjoyed what I've heard. "Heaven is a Lie" has some haunting music in the background and is the best thing I've heard from them.

Heaven's a Lie was probably the last song I paid any attention to from Lacuna Coil, mostly because the male vocalist refuse to realize who all the vocal talent in the group belongs to and it kinds sucks the kickass out of most of their songs to me.

See, I didn't mind the male vocalist on the older stuff, especially the aforementioned "To Live Is To Hide." His voice fits in PERFECTLY with Christina's in that song, as he's a little more downplayed and harmonious to Christina. Plus, the music during the verses (when he sings) fits his vocals better as it gives you something else to listen to instead of some lame ambience.

And let me just say that the chick singer from Theatre of Tragedy looks like damaged goods. She just LOOKS like damaged goods.

I've never liked LC at all, which I've never been able to figure out since I'm normally a fan of goth/doom metal

Also, check out The Gathering and Theatre of Tragedy.

If you check out either of those two, stick to their first 2-3 CDs. Unfortunately, in the late 90's, quite a few (if not all) Euro doom metal bands fell into a trap of switching from metal to electronoambientechnoindus shit. Paradise Lost was really the only band to pull that off well IMO and they eventually went back to making metal anyway. All the rest haven't been the same since.

A friend of mine let me hear a couple songs off their newest cd. I LOVE their cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence". That is very kick ass. I can't really speak for the rest though.

I'm actually a bigger fan of the more ambient/techno-ish stuff by Theatre of Tragedy than the earlier stuff. A little more energy, and at times more depressing and darker. Lyrics aren't as good, and the songs aren't as well-written, but the later stuff is easier to get into. Hell, first Theatre of Tragedy song I heard was "Machine" off of Musique. Can't find that album, though.

I would love to do that, but since I live in Australia, that might be a bit hard. :P But I do agree with you Hawk, she is fucking hot!

Thanks for the headsup Laz, I didn't know Lacuna Coil had been around a lot longer than Evanescence (fuck I have trouble spelling that!) I will admit, it's a very good album and I still listen to it a fair bit. Favourite track has to be 'Fragile' and of course the cover of 'Enjoy The Silence'

I will check out those other bands you recommended Laz when I get time.

Here's a hint:

If there's a hard rock group from the States that's mainstream and brand new? They've ripped off a fucking plethora of bands.

Stuck Mojo should've been huge in the mid-to-late 90's with the likes of Rage Against The Machine, 311, KoRn, Limp Bizkit, and Kid Rock when he was still doing the rap/rock thing. Why? Because they formed in 1991 as a funk/metal band, turned into a rap/hardcore band in 1993, and basically was doing the whole rapcore/raprock/rapmetal/whateverthefuckyouwannacallit-core thing before ANY of these bands were. Save for maybe 311, but that's besides the point. So why didn't they succeed? Well, they're from the South and revel in the fact, so there's the "fucking redneck" stigmata (even though the frontman, Bonz, is black). The solo's were crazy at best and melodically fitting at worst (thanks to Rich Ward being a more underground, heavier version of Zakk Wylde in terms of well laid-out metal songwriting). The drumming was fast and powerful but not too complicated (Bud relied mostly on double-kick and a switchoff of eighth and quarter note snare hits, better work than most bands that garner even the slightest mainstream attention could possibly muster). And the basslines were often groovey and oddly a great accomplice to the guitar riffs (the best ones done by Corey Lowery, brother of Sevendust's Clint Lowery).

Speaking of which...fuck Sevendust. They took Stuck Mojo's sound and format (black frontman, hard-hitting drums and groove-laden guitar-driven metal/hard rock), erased the funk and rap influences, and just commercialized the whole fucking thing. Listen to Sevendust's debut and then listen to Stuck Mojo's Declaration of a Headhunter (true, a few years later, but Mojo was primarily touring between '97 and 2k). They sound so similar it hurts.

Yeah. Every band you've heard ripped somebody else off, so hey. Mojo ripped off Anthrax and Public Enemy (in fact, I'm surprised they never covered that song, especially since Rich Ward lives for 80's metal).

Wait, wait...wait.

Tarja fucking left Nightwish? I had heard rumors.

...that fucking SUCKS.

I heard that the band asked her to leave because she got all pissy about money (more or less.) She's going solo now. :(

As far as Lacuna Coil goes, I love them. I can honestly say there are less than 5 soungs that I don't like by them but their sound isn't for everyone.

Yea, her firing was a very public thing that included her termination letter being posted on the group's official site. It came down to her being "too much of a diva". What that apparently meant was she was refusing to tour with the rest of Nightwish. She would take her own jet. She also wouldn't do practise sessions anymore with the band either. I had heard rumors of a possible new female vocalist that the rest of the band was wanting to hire, but I cant remember the name of the band she was affiliated with.

If you like Nightwish though, you should track down some music from their bass player's side project, Tarot. They have a great 80s 'hair metal' sound.

I checked out a Tarot song, Blood Runs Cold...Wasnt' too thrilled. I'll try and track down some more. I'm not a "Hair Metal" fan at all, I actually despise most of it. Just comes off as really cheesey as a genre.

The thing about Nightwish for me, and what put them over most every other band I've heard (...behind BG), is how well arranged their music was for the most part. Tarja's voice, combined with the Male vocalist make a damn good combination. The male vocalist never stepped out of his position, the front was Tarja's. She dominated it. The use of orchestrial elements, and stories made it all the better.

Stuff like Planet Hell, Kinslayer, Elevenpath, Tenth Man Down, that shit is badass. Some of Nightwish's stuff, was eh, but when they hit the right note, they PWNED it. The entire last CD "Once" is just awesome from beginning to end...Other then Creek Mary's Blood. Fucking hate that song.

Nothing they can do if Tarja was acting like a bitch though. It'll be hard as hell to replace her when she basicly *WAS* the band to alot of people, but maybe they can pull something off.

I've only ever liked a couple Lacuna Coil songs. I think the main reason, is as others have stated, the male vocalist never seems to know when it's time to back off and let the chick sing. She has a great voice (Not Tarja level, but better then Lee I'd say), but in alot of the songs she's either in the background, or a strong portion of the song is ate up by him. Plus, the one CD I downloaded (Forget which. Had Heaven's A lie. Great song.) eventually all just ran together into one lump. None of the songs beyond one or two felt distinct at all.

On a whole, I love female fronted bands. Not sure why exactly. I've been trying to check out some of the suggestions already in this thread, but haven't had a whole lot of luck.

I'd also recommend Unfinished Thought. One could probably categorize more as alternative metal but they're worth checking out.

I keep thinking of how it would sound if you blended together the styles of Sarah McLachlan and a slightly more powerful/operatic Gwen Stefani. I'm not sure if that's an apt comparison but it's the best I can think of at the moment.

Song recommendations: Evening, Silhouette, Umbrella, Xoe, and Probabilities

If you can come across it, give 'Pyre of Gods' and 'I Rule' a listen. I believe they're off their most recent album, 'Suffer our Pleasure'.

I've been getting a friend of mine into Lacuna Coil. He likes what he's heard so far. I'm slowly trying to get more into gothic hard rock / metal, but it's a slow transition, since he spends most of his time downloading music from video games.

Well...the only people I've actually met, personally, that have been into Lacuna Coil/Nightwish/etc. as more than a now-and-then listen have been the gamers/anime kids/GSA/fags/mallgoths/indie fucks. You know...the girls are all lesbians though they've never eaten pussy and suck plenty o' cock, the guys are all either bi or flat-out gay though no member of either gender would touch them for less $50, they wear clothes in two sizes (super-tight and super-baggy), don't know what colors are besides black and purple...you know, the kids most of us see while at the mall or driving down the street and just want to beat the snot out of.

I am a huge Nightwish fan, and have been for about 4 years now. I was lucky enough to see them live in NY a couple of years back at BB Kings Night Club. They rocked the house. It's a shame that Tarja got a big head because her vocals were what made Nightwish great. I hope they can find someone just as talented.

I don't like Evanesence. There are so many other bands with female lead singers that have been around a lot longer, plus I'm not a fan of the whole Christian rock undertones. Tarja is a better singer and both Nightwish and Sinergy are better musically, and they will never be played in the US.

I get really upset when I see bands like H.I.M., who I hate, getting play while bands like Iced Earth and Sonata Arctica don't get anything here in the US. They blow away H.I.M. and the only reason they get played is because fucking Bam pimps their shit.

I come to the conclusion that Iced Earth and the likes won't be played here because they are too complex musically and American music fans can't comprehend or wrap their heads around the sound. They need 3 cords and that's it. Fucking MTV has ruined music in the states.
