Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2006 Tanner dropped out of a scheduled fight against Horn, and now CHael has taken his place, source MMAWeekly. Didn't even know that Tanner was supposed to fight Horn at this event? Neither did I. Wasn't the Tanner/Horn fight suppose to be at the Ortiz/Griffen card? Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2006 Yeah, I saw that yesterday. It seems Tanner is too busy drinking beer, gambling, and avoiding Oregon. Really. I'm not making this up. Check out his MySpace.

Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2006 Word be's that UFC really wanted to do Horn/Tanner at UFC 59 (presumably so they can let somebody go?) but Tanner has pulled out citing personal reasons. Chael Sonnen is steppin' up and taking on J-Horn it now seems.

Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2006 So, I'm looking at the past few weeks, the card, etc. And I've come to one simple conclusion: This is the worst promoted/put together UFC card since UFC 53. Like, they fucked this one up pretty badly. 57, which had Randy/Chuck III (arguably a bigger fight then Hughes/Gracie) still had a well promoted undercard. This screams "Thrown together in the hopes that the main event will go over huge". Don't get me wrong, there could be some good fights on the show. Maybe even some really good ones. I just don't get that type of vibe when I see the commercials and read about the show.

Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 So it's less then a week away and sadly, nobody really cares. I've got the PPV-week feeling but it's just that, nothing more. It's weird because the past 3 PPV's we've had main events of Couture/Liddell 3, Franklin/Loiseau and AA/Sylvia and this one has a bigger main then maybe all 3, definetly bigger then the last two. And I still can't find myself caring all that much. I'm more stoked on seeing Legionarius make PPV then the Hughes/Gracie fight, to be honest. This show will be redeemed when Hughes stomps a hole through Royce and then St. Pierre enters the octagon to tell the crowd that in October/November he'll be taking the title. The only thing this show really had going for it is unpredictability in the main. All the polls I've read are split right down the middle. The general consensus seems to be that either Royce will tap Hughes or Hughes will KO or TKO Royce.

Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2006 There's an article on UFC.com about Allesio Sakara and how he's one of the only guys who could stand with Chuck and possibly beat him. Jump on the bandwagon now, folks.

Jump on the bandwagon now, folks. I think Babalu or Tito have a better chance to beat Liddell then him.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2006 Chuck's never faced somebody with Sakara's level of standup, I think is what the article was trying to get across. Babalu and Tito are obviously more well rounded then Sakara but there's no question that the guy has some of the best hands in that company right now. Chuck vs Sakara would be interesting only because it might be the only fight where you see Chuck go for a takedown.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2006 That Gracie/Hughes preview was AWESOME. Though it didn't really go beyond "Royce Gracie is a legend from the beginning who could catch Matt with a sub/Matt Hughes is a dominant champion who will most likely beat the shit out of Royce Gracie".
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 Sakara is too small for 205. There's a reason why they're giving him Lister I think. He should drop down to 185 and take advantage of the wide open field.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 So is this card worth $35 and getting a couple guys together for beer and pizza who have never watched a full UFC card before?
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 The card? No. On-paper it's one of the worst in a while, and the best matches on the card may not be shown at all. With that said, sometimes the worst cards on paper end up being really good shows. Swick/Riggs has potential to be really fun and explosive, Sanchez hasn't had a bad fight or performance yet in the UFC. Every fight Vera has provides a glimpse into a potential superstar and saviour of the HW division, and his past 2 UFC fights have ended in spectacular fashion, so him vs. Silva could work. Then for the dark matches (that could be shown on PPV), Spencer Fisher, Sakara, Gonzaga, are names that could be very relevant in the future. Actually, now that I think of it, this is a pretty decent card on paper, but the odds of it being great = the odds of it sucking. Gracie/Hughes is worth getting for historical value and for those who have an interest in it (Gracie fans, for example). This is one of those fights where every move matters and is filled with emotion, if you are invested in it. I say this because if the people you watch with are not familiar with Gracie and the significance of him being in the octagon, then the fight may not nearly be as exciting as the UFC presents it as. UFC shows are typically fun to get for a big group, I know since LOTC started hosting shows at his house, it makes for a good time and when it gets fun, and everyone is cheering for the same person, or something crazy happens, it's really fun. Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 Yeah I'm having a couple people over at my crib for the fight. Most of them are MMA fans, so it should be fun. The only kind of fun you can have without females.
Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 This is should actually be a pretty good card for most non-fans, as Royce is known amongst most people, and while many of the matches on the card have little meaning in the big scheme of things, they should be fun to watch. Of course, to a more seasoned fan, the lack of important match-ups is pretty dissapointing, but your average beer drinker won't give a shit as Riggs bombs on Swick or Vera & Silva trade. Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2006 As a newbie to MMA, I've been hearing alot of people talking about Royce not being able to wear his Gi. Can someone tell me the advantages Royce had when he did wear his Gi?
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2006 The Gi can be used for leverage when it comes to applying things like chokes and armbars. I'm sure it goes a bit deeper then that but that's one reason why UFC doesn't allow Gi's.

I'm sure it goes a bit deeper then that but that's one reason why UFC doesn't allow Gi's. It's true that you can use the gi as something to grab onto when trying for a choke, but it also makes escape attempts a bit tougher due to... I'm not sure what to call it, a higher friction coefficient is probably the correct scientific term. You can't just slip out because of sweat and/or grease, is what I'm getting at. Disadvantages. Well, if you're a complete novice with a gi on you could probably get it pulled over your head like a hockey sweater. And I'm pretty sure that someone with the proper knowhow would be able to use the gi against you.
