Guest Arnold_OldSchool Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 I'm interested in what any Lutherians on the board have heard as it regards to the bleeding icons of Mary, as the Lutherians feel much like this little blurb of text explains: The Worship of Mary Roman Catholics believe that Mary, the mother of Jesus, remained a virgin after the birth of Jesus and was sinless all of her life. She is worshiped in the Catholic church as the "Mother of God" and the "Queen of Heaven." St. Bernard stated that she was crowned "Queen of Heaven" by God the Father, and that she currently sits upon a throne in Heaven making intercession for Christians. The Bible teaches otherwise. In the Bible, Mary was a sinner just like the rest of us. She said herself that she needed a "Saviour" (Lk. 1:47), and she even had to offer a sacrifice for her sins in Luke 2:24. Jesus was only her "firstborn" son, according to Matthew 1:25, because she later had other children as well (Mt. 13:55; Gal. 1:19; Psa. 69:8). There's only ONE mediator between God and men, and it isn't Mary (I Tim. 2:5). The last time we hear from Mary in the Bible she is praying WITH the disciples, not being prayed to BY the disciples (Acts 1:14). The Bible never exalts Mary above anyone else. Neither should we.
daileyxplanet Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 I think you hit the nail on the head there Arnold.
Guest Arnold_OldSchool Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 Do you feel this is an act of Satan to direct others to Praise mary in a round about slap in the face to God?
Guest Felonies! Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 I'll never get the Mary thing. Last year in Chicago there was like a piss stain or something on an underpass and there were Catholics worshipping the stain. Weird. However, it is good for lending us Sentences You'd Never Think You'd Read, like "Some people are not so sure that the Virgin Mary is under the Kennedy Expressway."
daileyxplanet Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 Do you feel this is an act of Satan to direct others to Praise mary in a round about slap in the face to God? The Bible says that Satan disguises as an Angel of Light, and that he uses signs to divert people's eyes from God.
The Metal Maniac Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 Wait; I thought Satan actually WAS the Angel of Light - before his fall, at least.
Guest Arnold_OldSchool Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 Uh oh this thread may actually yield deep discussion if were not careful
Carnival Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 I was raised Catholic and praying to Mary is one of the reasons I got out. I don't mind statues of Mary and her being considered "Holy", but actually worshiping her is crossing the line.
daileyxplanet Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 Wait; I thought Satan actually WAS the Angel of Light - before his fall, at least. He was, but the Bible says he had the ability to return to the form, since he's the ultimate deceiver.
Jingus Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 I don't remember the details, but wasn't there some uncertainty over whether Mary was even a virgin? I recall being told that in one of the original texts, the word that was eventually translated as "virgin" could also be read as "young woman". As for the bleeding statues, who knows. That kind of thing is almost impossible to definitively prove true or false.
daileyxplanet Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 I believe she was a virgin when Jesus was concieved, what happened after then is her business.
The Metal Maniac Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 I recall being told that in one of the original texts, the word that was eventually translated as "virgin" could also be read as "young woman". I've heard that as well. However, part of me says that they wouldn't make an error THAT large in translating, since Mary's virgin-ness is one of the ways that the Bible "proves" Christ's divinity (in quotes because I know that what the Bible says doesn't really prove anything); I don't think that someone just accidently translated "young woman" to "virgin" and went "Holy crap, his mom was a virgin?", know what I mean?
Guest Arnold_OldSchool Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 La Parka lost to Satan...we need a 11th hour comeback!
Guest Felonies! Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 Some people are not so sure that the Virgin Mary is under the Kennedy Expressway. Wouldn't be the first time there was a virgin under a Kennedy, lol m i rite, hi 5 d00d

No, it's a little more complicated than that. You see, in various Old Testament prophecies, it's said that the Messiah will be born from a virgin. The controversy comes in the New Testament translations over whether Mary really WAS a virgin or not. Ergo the Christian scholars who later translated that text definitely had reason to claim that she was a virgin, regardless of the truth.
Guest guerillagenius Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 You do know that God doesn't exist right?
Jingus Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 You do know that's neither a proven fact nor ultimately relevant to the discussion at hand?
