Depending on who Boston is pitching, the Yanks may not fair too well with Wang and Chacon.

Yankees either hit Wake, or get murdered by him.

The Beckett matchup will be a must see.

And now...for something completely different

"When Prior and Wood Come Home Again"

(Sung to the tune of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home")

When Prior and Wood come home again. Hoorah! Hoorah!

They'll eat some innings and rest the pen. Hoorah! Hoorah!

They'll give the Cubs the success they seek,

If they can stay healthy for more than a week.

How the Ks will mount when Prior and Wood come home!

The Cub fans all will shout for joy. Hoorah! Hoorah!

To welcome back their darling boys. Hoorah! Hoorah!

They'll be the cure for the Cubbies' pain

'Til one goes down with a shoulder strain.

How the league will quake when Prior and Wood come home!

The North Side will get used to wins. Hoorah! Hoorah!

Once they get back their strikeout twins. Hoorah! Hoorah!

The Wrigley faithful will chant their names.

They'll play long toss and they'll simulate games.

How the curse will fall when Prior and Wood come home!

Houston has a pair with the Brew Crew Monday and Tuesday, and then back home for a couple with St. Louis and then onward-to Coors Field!

And here's a stat I find interesting-The Astros are 10-0 in games started by Taylor Buchholz, Fernando Nieve, and Wandy Rodriguez. They are, thusly, 5-7 in games started by Roy Oswalt and Andy Pettitte. Before Backe got hurt, we were 1-1 in his starts. I find this an encouraging sign, vis a vis our young arms.

Roger Clemons will come back before Wood or Prior.

Yeah, I'd like to see Clemens back...maybe as our fifth starter. I mean...with the way W-Rod and Taylor Buchholz for Rookie of the Year are pitching, I don't see either of them giving up their spot.

One of the young pitchers could give relief to Lidge as the secondary Closer. There is no need for Lidge to blow multiple saves a week so why not go closer by committee.

There was some talk about in Spring about grooming Buchholz to be the new closer, but I think we could easily put Wheeler or Qualls in to close out games. Houston's got a pretty good track record of keeping closers until they start to get shitty and then being able to insert the set-up man into his place. If Clemens would be willing to go to every road game, and not just the one's that he's pitching in, I seriously think he could be one of the top closers in the Majors, ala Smoltz and Eckersly. But...that'll probably never happen.

I don't know about the closer by committe idea. I'm not a relief pitcher, but I can speculate that I'd like to have a defined role, say, "I know that tonite I'm gonna pitch in the 8th inning." or "I know that I'm gonna come in for a couple if the starter struggles." I think it helps pitchers get in a better groove to have a set role. But I honestly think Lidge'll be alrite. His stuff was back to nasty today, but he's still got some wildness issues. He's not Troy Percival bad yet.

Clemens back in Boston or NY would be sweet. NY would offer the bigger check, but way less perks.

I doubt he goes there. I know it's hard to believe, but I don't think money's really ultra-important to Clemens. Number 1 is his family...in Houston. Number 2 is a winning team...also Houston. He doesn't really need to leave.

Scott Rolen: not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer.

The Cardinals at first thought Rolen suffered from bronchitis and would return for a four-game series against the Nationals. Rolen instead experienced a persistent 103-degree temperature that kept him bedridden for several days before he finally sought treatment at Barnes-Jewish West on Friday night. Rolen, who said he had lost eight or nine pounds in the past five days, was administered intravenous fluids to counter dehydration.

The Orioles are in trouble with all the injuries. Javy Lopez and Kevin Millar are still hurt, but not hurt enough to go on the DL. Tejada is hurting as well but he's DHing..although Im beginning to wonder if its because his consecutive games streak..Roberts is on the 15 day DL.

Nick Markakis is struggling, Tim Brower is god awful out of the bullpen..

This is probably going to get really, really, really ugly really fast.

Word is Rich Hill is getting called up, David Aardsma's going back down, and Glendon will finally be cast away to the pen.

Fun fact about the Cubs' pitching staff this year, which I shamelessly stole from BTF:

Outside of Greg Maddux, Sean Marshall, Bob Howry and Ryan Dempster, every other hurler who has pitched for the Cubs this season has averaged 4+ BBs per nine innings.

Sounds like the Orioles are going to have a repeat performance of every year from 1998-2005. Just add 2006 to the list as well.

The sad thing is there seems to be a lot of parity this year in the AL East and I dont see any team running away with the division..so if they can manage to get through this injury bug part and keep at .500, they're still in it. But if it keeps going, I think theres a good shot they could finish dead last if Tampa gets their act together.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet. The padres traded Doug Mirabelli back to the Red Sox for Josh Bard, minor-league pitcher Clay Meredith and cash.

I think it was the Blue Jays radio announcers who were talking about this during the Os series..that Wakefield was struggling because they traded Mirabeli and Josh Bard was having a tough time with the knuckleball..I think he had 10 passed balls already..

Mirabelli will be catching Wakefield tonight aparently..

Not that I need to ask, but I'll be looking forward to seeing how the Yanks/Sox game went tonight just by looking in this thread. I'm going to the Mets/Nats with a few friends, and don't really feel like sitting through a 4 hour replay of the game by the time I get home. American League baseball requires much more patience than I have.

Meredith is an interesting case. He's a college pick, so the Red Sox thought that they had to fast-track him, but he didn't necessarily follow suit, as his AAA peripherals were below what he posted in A ball the year before. He got rocked in his cup of coffee, but there's still enough there to be optimistic that Meredith could contribute in the San Diego pen in 2007, maybe even sooner.

If Meredith burns out in the minors, though...the Loretta trade gets even uglier for the Padres.

Phew. That was a rough couple of weeks...

So essentially they traded Meredith and Bard for Mark Loretta. I can live with that.

No. They had Meredith, Bard and Loretta all on the same team. That doesn't count. They traded Bard and Meredith for a 36 year old .180 hitting backup catcher named Doug Mirabelli. In my book thats a bad trade.

But they got Loretta by trading Mirabelli in the first place. They were able to get him back by giving up Meredith and Bard. They need a catcher who can catch Wakefield, and Bard couldn't do that. It's a good trade.

It was a stupid ass trade to begin with. Just trading away one of the few guys that can catch a knuckle-baller and trying to replace him with someone not experienced in catching a knuckler isn't good when one of the key guys in your rotation is one of the only guys in the Majors that throws a knuckleball.
