So... Is Terry Funk a Sellout?

Recommended Posts

I guess this is a pretty straight-forward question. I've always been a Terry Funk fan, ever since he pile-drove Ric Flair through a table in a tuxedo.

But I seem to recall his teary-eyed promo on the Forever Hardcore DVD being all about WWE sucking, and WWE ruining ECW, and how they shouldn't have brought it back (paraphrasing.) Yet here he is ready for another feud with Mick Foley in the new ECW. The feud itself has actually sparked my interest (hard for WWE to do that at all anymore) and I love the promo Foley cut last night... But isn't it a little contrived considering Funk's attitude just last year?

This is the man who has more retirements than Hogan. He does what he does, he needs no explination.

I always go back to Foley's book when dealing with the "sell-out" question.

He's doing what he loves and getting paid for it. Why should it matter?

That's certainly true... sell-out may be too strong a word... Hypocrit perhaps?

Hes a 375 year old drunkard...how can he be expected to remember a rant from a whole year ago? Enjoy him while hes still around.

That crazy old man will probably out live all of us. At the end of the world, it'll be cockroaches, Funk and Keith Richards

He probably made an exception for the show since Foley is his best friend.

Disregarding the fact that he's a wrestler, is 60 really thaaaaaat old?

Wasn't the drunkard thing bullshit anyway? I seem to recall Foley saying in his first book that he cut a promo that referred to Funk drinking, then said (Not true, but Funk got a lot of pity for it).

Well last year there actually was an alternative to WWE's ECW show, and Funk didn't take the bigger pay day and did Hardcore Homecoming. I don't believe there even is a hardcore homecoming this year, so in effect he is partcipating in the only "ECW" that exists anymore.

Yeah it was more about (on the forever hardcore dvd) that instead of going to WWE he stuck with his friends etc. If his friends are going to the WWE now, why shouldn't he.

That and he probably needs the money.

His age isn't but his body is that of an 90 year old man, or a corpse.

Funk basically doesn't have knees anymore. I mean if you watched Beyond the Mat his knees are destroyed, and fuck, that was almost ten years ago.

Corpses that have been decayed for 20 years are in better shape than Funk's body.

I never understood the sell out thing anyway, Funk just makes me really sad. Like watching Grandpa trying to go one on one with Michael Jordan. Or sure, Grandpa played when he was younger and was awesome, but they were using a peach basket and didn't know about dribbling.

I don't think this is as much about selling out, but as an opportunity. In some of his interview on why he chose HH over last year's ONS, he said it was because the WWE needed competition, and the more promotions/shows is better for the business as a whole. This year, there is no HH for him to do again, and it seems that the WWE honsetly is trying something different which makes Funk interested in being in the new ECW.

You just expressed my exact feelings towards Terry Funk.

But it doesn't matter because he's Terry god damn Funk and he's earned the right.

Heyman created ECW.. No one has the right to say that the WWE version of ECW uis a disgrace, if Heyman says it isn't. If Heyman called Funk and asked him to join his new ECW, how could Funk honestly get off telling him that he won't because it's ruining the ECW legacy?

If he was a WWE stooge, he wouldn't always get booted from whatever position they give him. Whatever the circumstances, you can't say it's not authentic if the guy who created it says it is. It would be like saying Windows XP isn't an authentic windows, then creating some other version, and saying that yours is the real windows. No. Even if it's better, Bill Gate's is still the real thing.

So if Tod Gordon starts up a new ECW, would that be the real one?

*shudder*

Don't forget Abdullah the Butcher, that Planetoid in his 70's is still hobbling around impaling people with Forks. Makes Terry Funk look like his kid brother
