TWiB 6/12 - 6/18

The Twins for the first time don't have a starting lineup that makes me cringe. It's not great, but they're finally getting the younger guys a shot. Start winning some road games, and at least go for a winning record. Playoff contention is probably asking for too much.

Gardenhire seems to have a little Dusty Baker "Young players aren't worth shit" in him. They've signed a lot of retreads in the past couple of seasons. Listening to Willie Randolph's post game press conferences it looks he's been inflicted with it also. Word is the Mets are sending Milledge down for his "immature behavior" so he can "grow up"

Most managers seem to have that problem.

He learned that from Tom Kelly. They love the veterans. One difference is once TK made his mind up about you, he would not change his opinion.

There's nothing inherently wrong with giving a proven player priority; it's what you do when the proven player underachieves that matters. Bobby Cox isn't afraid to make the changes, Dusty Baker is.

That's a shame, but the place was so far gone, there was no other choice.

Al, do you know what they're going to do with the site? I heard the Red Wings were interested in a new arena to replace Joe Louis. I think the best option would be to move hockey to Michigan & Trumbull, but they'll probably just turn it into condominiums.

Ah damn, that sucks in a way. First pro sporting event I went to was a Tigers game there. I seemed to always end up in the right field bleachers. Good times, even if they sucked most of the time that I was old enough to drive down there.

The guy didn't score from first on a double and then, when asked about it after the game, essentially said that it was all right because they won the game anyway. By adding that to a Cal Ripken Victory Lap after his first major league home run, Milledge doesn't really give Randolph or Minaya much of a choice here.

Getting excited about his first home run is permissible, but "oh well we won the game so who cares" is the kind of immaturity that should be remedied, because that's not just a one-shot deal like the Baby's First Homer deal, this is an attitude problem that could stick around for a long time. So fix that, but God, stop dwelling on the homer thing.

It should, yeah, but it's an abandoned building. There are trees growing in the grandstand. It needs to be drastically rehabbed or torn down outright, and unfortunately, they're going to go with the latter. It should either become a new hockey barn (Red Wing Stadium?) or maybe even a community ballpark, something, anything to kind of help clean up Corktown, which is apparently getting pretty run-down and could use some sort of urban renewal. In the tradition of the location, it needs to be something that the public can enjoy.

From an article about the possible Murton/Bynum platoon:

So what happened in 1997? The Cubs installed another so-called prospect, Brant Brown, in left on Opening Day. Brown became famous only for almost killing off WGN radio broadcaster Ron Santo when he dropped a fly ball in Milwaukee in 1998. That blunder didn't cause the Cubs to miss the playoffs, but it severely stressed out Santo, whose frantic radio call of that dropped fly is ingrained in Cubs lore.

This is the incident Al's mentioned a couple of times; I'd love to actually hear this.

After watching 1+ innings of the Cubs/Tigers game, I'm convinced that Glendon Rusch is the worst pitcher in baseball. Yes, even worse than Chris Reitsma.

They should just cut their losses and designate him for assignment. He's had one good year and that's the basis of his contract. I wasn't sure why he was getting the start after Guzman was called up. Guzman's only pitched three innings, but if those are any indication, he should've gotten the start. Hopefully we've seen the last start from Mr. Rusch.

I was only watching to see how bad Rusch could do. Once they put in Guzman, I started doing something else, but I come back to see that he's pitched like...3 innings, struck out 6 and allowed one run. Honestly, is there any reason that Glendon Rusch started this game? Has he had a good game this season? Why is Jerome Williams in AAA but Rusch is on the main roster? Was Rusch that much better of an option? I'm not a Cubs fan, but I'm starting to dislike Dusty Baker, too.

Way to go, Tits, you can't even get out of the 2nd! Any other team would've just cut him by now, but HE'S SIGNED TO LIKE FIVE MILLION DOLLARS OVER TWO YEARS WHAT THE FUCK

Haven't seen it anywhere, but "great bat, terrible glove" all world prospect BJ Upton was arrested for drunk driving in Durham, NC. Blew the same BAC as JJ Redick did.

Durham, NC used to be home of the Dukies, now it's the sports related crime capital of the US.

These Devil Rays, they're not turning out so well, are they?

The Randy suspension doesn't bother me. It'll give him another days rest, which he probably needs. I was all FOR the beaning. It was the first time they've chanted "Randy" in the Bronx all season. Beisides, guys have been throwing at Jeter's hands ever since the thumb injury. You wanna plunk guys? Expect the same in return. Which the Yankees have NOT really done, since Clemens was in town.

I'd imagine Rusch is still around because getting rid of him would mean the Cubs would have to admit they made a mistake by re-signing him to a multi-year deal. It's not in their nature to do so; easier to make excuses.

I thought Cole Hamels was supposed to be amazing. That's what I get for picking him up for a spot start. At least Francisco Liriano isn't letting me down. Just too bad his team won't score for him.

Chris Coste finally got his first MLB hit. Too bad our starters can't go a game without imploding. These last few games have been depressing, because the team is seemingly out of it right in the first inning.

Ask and you shall receive.

3-2 Twins.

The Jays never win these low-scoring games, for some reason. Hopefully, they can do something against the Marlins bullpen, but since this would give them a season-high FOUR game win streak if they pulled this out, I'm not very optimistic.
