Guest guerillagenius Report post Posted June 16, 2006 I just got Under The Iron Sea by Keane from oink and so far it's decent. I really liked Hopes and Fears and it had probably one song that I didn't like. I like 'Is it any wonder?' which seems to be the first single they are putting out from the new album. Anyone else had a chance to listen yet? Also I could careless if people don't like Keane so don't even bother. I'm not a huge fan of Coldplay asside from a song or two, but for some reason I really dig Keane's sound and style.

Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 Do Keane fans also like Doves? Because I was listening to The Last Broadcast earlier and while "Words" was good, the rest of the album irritated me to no end.
vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 I stood front row at The Doves when they were at Austin City Limits last year. I had never heard of them before. The only reason I stood there was because The Arcade Fire was playing directly after them (actually an hour later. Standing in the 100 degree Texas heat with a bunch of fat hipsters...) and I wanted to be up front for their crazy good live show. I also remember that both Keane and Coldplay where playing at ACL as well. However, I never saw the members of any of the bands at the same place at the same time... The plot thickens... Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 A lot of people whose taste I generally trust/respect thinks Doves are something wonderful, but, after giving The Last Broadcast and Some Cities a shot, I can safely say that I mostly hate them.
vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 As far as I can tell, they fall into the category (they meaning The Doves, but also Keane) of "nice and inoffensive". Kind of like...air (not the wonderful electro-pop duo).
Special K 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 I was going to shit myself if you compared Air to Keane til I read the last sentence. They were part of a really great concert I went to they were absolutely awful. They merely suck on the radio. But trust me, at a concert, that guy's voice is PIERCING. So you're left with a guy with a voice that makes you want to stick knitting needles in your ears, and a terrible, spastic keyboard player. I'm a much better piano player than that fucker. All he does is plug away at chords and look like he's trying to copy the body language of the Ultimate Warrior's entrance. God I hate Keane.
Guest guerillagenius Report post Posted June 16, 2006 So I guess the haters not apply thing didn't do anything. I'm not like a hardcore fan, I just like the upbeat sound of Hopes and Fears. I really don't like Coldplay that much, the lead singers voice annoys me, for some reason I like Keane's singer's voice.
vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 I don't hate Keane. Hating Keane would be like hating bread. Keane is good for Sandra Bullock movies and stuff, but it's just kinda...there.
Special K 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 I can sit through a Keane song on the radio. But it was torture to listen to them being BLASTED for an hour. And I really do find the keyboardist to be a little... disturbing and a lot terrible. In short, they're a really vanilla, wussy, derivative band. I guess if you like soft rock, but I don't. Not that I endorse that style of hamfisted crap, but there's an awful lot of it around.

Well, for the new generation. Elton John and Jerry Lee Lewis could play like madmen. Shit, Trent Reznor's far more competent than those hacks (EDIT: by hacks, I mean the guys from Coldplay and Keane, not JLL and Elton John, obviously) , and writes melodies. I guess it's just more apparent in Keane than Coldplay because the Keane guy's vocal meoldies are ultra-simple too. He just belts it out like that makes up for it. When I think about it, the only non-vocal melody from Coldplay that's interesting at all is lifted directly from Kraftwerk's 'Computer Love'.
k thx 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 When I think about it, the only non-vocal melody from Coldplay that's interesting at all is lifted directly from Kraftwerk's 'Computer Love'. I dunno, they had some decent tunes on the first album. But yeah, downhill fast.
Special K 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 As I said, some of their vocal melodies were pretty cool. I really liked "Trouble" when it came out, but if you think about it, the melodey's all in the vocals, the piano backing is really basic. I actually liked Coldplay's first album too, but they wore out their welcome really quickly by doing the same damn song over and over. Besides the "Computer Love" song, I can't really dredge up any memories of their past two albums, even though the singles were on the radio constantly. Youth N Asia 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 I haven't heard either album by them yet, but I was shocked by how much I liked "Everybody's Changing" and the new song that's getting a little play now. Fucking haters, Snow Patrol is good too.
Special K 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 Snow Patrol's ten times the band Keane is. They were both at the aforementioned show. (which Franz Ferdinand totally stole) Snow Patrol didn't quite blow the socks out of my ass, but they were pleasant, the guy could sing live, instead of just wailing. Of course Keane was so bad, after a song and a half, I had a headache and literally walked out of the arena onto the smoking deck until their set was done. I think out of the newer pleasant 'such nice boys' bands the Shins are easily my favorite.

dubq 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 Do Keane fans also like Doves? Because I was listening to The Last Broadcast earlier and while "Words" was good, the rest of the album irritated me to no end. I don't see the connection between Keane and the Doves. Doves more of a melodic trippy feeling to it, whereas Keane is pure British adult-comtempo/pop music. Anyway, I've seen the Doves live twice and they were amazing both times. Elbow is another band worth checking out for their trippy, laid-back jazz/funk inspired stylings. Special K 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 The Shins sound like none of the bands mentioned in this thread. Yeah you're right. Nix that comparison. Shins actually have a lot of energy (they're really funny live). bad comparison.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2006 I once had a copy of Doves' Lost Souls. It's the only CD to date that I've ever lost. I love the song "There Goes The Fear," and haven't endeavored to hear much else by them.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2006 I saw Elbow do an acoustic set at the CMJ fest back in '03. They were alright, which is how I generally feel about them. I can also tell you that the singer for the band talked rudely to me when I wouldn't let him use this one exit to go smoke outside (I was volunteering at the fest, following CMJ's orders). Whatta dick.
vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2006 Hey...I really dug that one Elbow CD that came out like...the one before the last one. As far as British bands go, I really like that band Clearlake. They're good. Yeah.
