Red Sox pick up Jason Johnson after the Indians designated him for assignment yesterday. I know they need starters, but I wouldn't like this move if I'm a Sox fan.

But who else is going to start? Starting pitching is running pretty thin and they don't want to "give up" on the season and just start a complete youth movement.

Ozzie Guillen is in trouble for calling Jay Mariotti a "fucking fag."

Let's see if that one gets mentioned on Around the Horn today.

LINK~

On Tuesday to reporters, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen referred to Chicago Sun-Times columnist and Around the Horn contributor Jay Mariotti as a derogatory name for a homosexual.

Angry with a recent column by Mariotti critical of Guillen's handling of recently demoted relief pitcher Sean Tracey and upset with Mariotti with columns of the past, Guillen said to reporters when referring to Mariotti before Tuesday's game with the Cardinals, "What a piece of [expletive] he is, [expletive] fag."

"I don't have anything against those people. In my country, you call someone something like that and it is not the same as it is in this country."

Ozzie Guillen

Mariotti was covering the NBA Finals Tuesday night and was not present to hear what Guillen said.

Columnist Greg Couch of the Sun-Times wrote a column Wednesday in response, calling for commissioner Bud Selig to suspend Guillen for his use of a "hurtful homophobic" term.

Before writing the column, Couch asked Guillen for an explanation. Guillen defended his use of the term "fag" by saying this about homosexuals and the use of the word in question: "I don't have anything against those people. In my country, you call someone something like that and it is not the same as it is in this country.''

Guillen said that in his native Venezuela, that word is not a reference to a person's sexuality, but to his courage. He said he was saying that Mariotti is "not man enough to meet me and talk about [things before writing].''

Guillen also told Couch that he has gay friends, attends WNBA games, went to a Madonna concert and plans to go to the Gay Games in Chicago.

"I called that of this man [Mariotti],'' he told Couch. "I'm not trying to hurt anybody [else]."

Scott Reifert, the White Sox's vice president of communications, offered to apologize on behalf of the organization when approached by Couch.

"To anybody who was insulted or hurt by that comment ... as an organization, we'll certainly apologize," Reifert told Couch.

Gay Games?

The bolded part only makes what he said worse, because he put a stereotype toward the gay community.

I'd go simply for Margaret Cho.

To play Devils Advocate for a moment, is Ozzie really out of line if he truly, in his heart meant what he said and didn't mean to harm the LBGT community? I mean just because he lives in America and has played ball here, does that mean he has had to forget customs and other personality quirks from his home nation?

I say let's just let him rant on whoever and whenever he wants, it makes Sportscenter a bit entertaining.

I agree with that, UT. I think the media can get too uptight sometimes in how those in the sports world can react to criticism. Too many people are easy offended these days. Fag isn't even really that much of an insult anymore. It's taken on a completely different meaning.

I could see why people are criticizing Ozzie if he called Marriotti a gringo or something, but it's not even news. And if it is news, it shouldn't be.

It's a really low risk move. They didn't give up anything to get him other than a little bit of cash that had been earmarked for David Wells, anyways. The Sox need a 4th starter, 5th starter and long man right now, so they basically have to go the scrap heap and hope to find themselves an Aaron Small or Shawn Chacon.

On the plus side, Jason Johnson is an extreme groundball pitcher and he's going from the worst infield defense to one of the best. That should help him a bit. If he can keep the ERA around 5.00, I'd be happy.

saying the word "fag" isn't bad...but calling someone a "fucking fag" is disparaging in the sense that he meant it to offend the writer. so he's saying that being a fag is bad. which, in this day & age, really shouldn't be tolerated. its ignorant. but if someone called a gay person "a fag" its alright. but when used to defame, critisise, or offend someone - its insinuating that being a homosexual is worthy of being slanderous.

but ozzie is a moron. we've all established this, right?

he should get a suspension of some sort. that shit shouldn't be tolerated.

Going to the Mets/Jays game Friday night. Should be pretty good, Delgado's first game back in Toronto and an awesome pitching match-up in Glavine vs. Halladay.

So much for that. Halladay's starting Saturday now so it's Janssen/Glavine on Friday night.

The rosters for the All Star Futures Game were announced today. I don't know who any of these guys are, but "Jayhawk Owens" has to be one of the better names I've come across.

EDIT: PAPI~!

Y'know, Ozzie Guillen could never manage any team but the White Sox, I swear. Guy is totally representative of the organization and fanbase.

Bedard has a 1 hit shutout through 7 with 9ks.

Best outing of the year, and hopefully the Os can push across an extra run or two here to let him get the complete game, cause if its 1-0 in the 9th, Chris Ray will come in (no problem with that though).

Just as this was posting..Javy smacks the first pitch out for a HR to make it 2-0 and Patterson bunts for a basehit.

Jon Lester is looking very good tonight. 9K so far.

I think Remy's off his medication again. He's been out of his mind tonight.

You'll never believe this, but Jaret Wright only went 5 innings tonight.

Nady just K'ed with the bases loaded to end another Mets threat. We're down 4-2, in a game we have no business trailing.

I Think Torre has finally realized hes going to suck after 5 innings, and with the meat of the order coming up there was no point in keeping him in.

I don't put a lot of stock in hitting for the cycle (Eric Valent being the last person to hit for the cycle pretty much proves that anyone with a hint of speed can do it), but I think it does help show that Reyes is really coming along. He's getting on base a lot more often and even hitting for considerably more power than he did last year, which adds a great deal to the Mets' already extremely potent offense.

So uh...the Twins bullpen has blown two saves in two nites against the 'Stros. First blown saves for the Twinkies this season. Wandy Rodriguez continues to "smoke and mirrors" his way to a respectable year.
