I hate fantasy baseball. 'Stros are down 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth and Joe Nathan comes in. I have Nathan on my fantasy team. He strikes out Mike Lamb, Morgan Ensberg (also on my fantasy team), and, then, of course, Preston Wilson hits a fuckin' homerun off him to tie the game, which the 'Stros came back to blow in the bottom of the inning.

Is it wrong of me to wish that Esteban Loaiza would have killed someone while he was driving 120 MPH drunk last week so the A's could have had a valid reason to void his contract?

I know they just won 10 games in a row but they've now been shutout 15 straight innings in Colorado. I'm going to assume no team has ever been shutout back-to-back games in Coors Field.

Edit: Okay looked it up, in 2002 the Pirates were shutout back-to-back games in Coors. There's your measuring stick A's! They need to score by the 6th inning tommorrow to avoid a record for most consecutive innings shutout in Coors.

How 'bout dem Cards?

Howard had a monster game, but the Yanks helped us out by coming back to steal that one.

St. Louis and Cincy are just making it easier for Clemens to be the hero and propel the Astros to another 2nd half surge to the post-season.

Hey, when the 'Stros go on their run, there's gonna be only one man to thank, and that man is Brandon Backe. God, I miss Backe. He let me and my brother give him bunny ears.

A's join the 2002 Pirates as the only team to ever be shutout back-to-back games in Coors Field. Oh and to top it off they get one hit tonight. All those good feelings after a 10 game winning streak? They gone.

One hit...one god damn hit. You can't say god damn on the air. Don't worry no one's listening.

Yeah, but he's got....CHARISMA~! If he pitched every game like it was Game 5 against the Cards or Game 7 against the Sox, he would win the Cy Young ever year. I don't think he's reached his full potential, regardless of what the statistics say. And besides, he's a sparkplug.

And Rivera pitches in the 8th inning AGAIN, the third time in his last 3 appearances. He started the 8th tonight, and was used for the full 6 outs. The bullpen is getting really, really, rediculous that it's at this point in June. The only time Mo should ever be in a game at this time, this frequently is in October/Late September playoff push. He will be completely worn out by the time crunch time comes.

I think Torre's afraid that there won't be a playoff push if Mo doesn't overextend himself now. Basically, he's robbing Peter to pay Paul, and it's gonna bite him in the ass that he's doing it before the AS break. I can't say I blame him, but knowing that any season without a WS title is considered a failure, he's really hedging his bets a bit too much. Seriously, what good will it do if the Yanks make the playoffs if Mo's arm is hanging by a thread, or worse yet he's injured because of overuse?

Rivera hadn't pitched since Saturday. He's in his mid 30s and has never really had any serious injury concerns. I know there's a push not to overuse pitchers, but I don't think a two inning outing here and there is really going to cripple anyone.

His last 3 outings have began in the 8th inning.

On their last road trip to Detroit, he pitched 3 innings in one game, and hurt his back the next day. He did it bending over tieing his shoe, which tells me he was really stiff, especially after sitting on the bench in between each inning when he is generally used to warming up, coming in, and going home.

No, he has never had injury problems...but when you get to your mid 30's, the chances of it surely increase. If Dotel doesn't show up and go back to his lights out form of a few years ago, which is what most people around here are banking on, this team is in major trouble.

In that three inning outing, he threw 25 pitches. He dispatched batters with such efficiency that it made sense for him to pitch three innings. And that 25 pitches is the most he's thrown in any of his last ten outings. He's not piling up a lot of pitches, and quite honestly two innings of work for Rivera is closer to an inning of work for a regular closer. To put this into a little perspective, Kyle Farnsworth threw 33 pitches on Monday in a single inning.

Al, are you of the same belief that managers are too cautious using closers and that they should be brought in when they are needed (e.g. more than one inning) and not just to rack up the saves. I don't know if I phrased that right but I hope you get the idea.

Usually. It's a dangerous habit to get into though, and I'm not of the belief that the closer usage of the late '70s and early '80s should be repeated. It's a different style nowadays where relievers pitch shorter and harder. I do think the save rule should be abolished. There's no reason to waste a good reliever with a three run lead and the bottom of the order up in the ninth. Meanwhile, closers should almost always appear in tie games.

The Yankees are interested in Jacque Jones. I know he's come on to be on of the Cubs' better hitters, but if they can make this deal, dear god, make it. Unless that means like, Freddie Bynum: starting rightfielder.

Red Sox pick up Jason Johnson after the Indians designated him for assignment yesterday. I know they need starters, but I wouldn't like this move if I'm a Sox fan.

Ozzie Guillen is in trouble for calling Jay Mariotti a "fucking fag."

Let's see if that one gets mentioned on Around the Horn today.
