And frankly, I believe that's 35, so yes, apart of DiPietro's contract will count against the cap should he retire. ...at least they don't hafta worry about drafting a new goalie for 15 years.

It's not like there were a bunch of 10 or 12 year deals and then this one was just a little bit longer. It's pretty much 2x or 3x longer than any other deal I can think of ... I mean, how many recently signed contracts are for more than 7 years?

If there were one goaltender I would sign for fifteen years, it wouldn't be DiPietro, who has proven nothing but that he is inconsistant and hasn't taken the team on his back when needed. I don't think I'd sign any goaltender for fifteen years...MAYBE Cam Ward after two more seasons of what he did in the playoffs. The Islanders are going to be the NHL's version of the Kansas City Royals. Once great, they've fallen a LONG way.

It hasn't been mentioned, yet, but I guess this is pretty rare. For the first time to 1999, a offer was tendered to a Class Two RFA. Philly offered to Vancouver's Ryan Kesler. Again, the fuck? 67.5 million? 15 years? That's fucking mind boggling.

How else can shit like this happen? No GM in the world would grant an absurd contract like that. And red, I'd hafta say he'd have bonuses in there somewhere.

The DiPietro signing only really hurts the Isles, since no one else will ever dish out a contract like that. Offer sheets to RFAs though is huge. Kesler is a former first round pick, but he was a 3rd line center for Vancouver, scored 10 goals or something. Not exactly the cream of the crop. Vancouver was all set to sign him for 850k a year until Clarke comes along with a comparatively huge 1.9 mil. Like TSN says in this article, this could result in retaliation by GMs, which will shoot up free agent prices. The article I linked is a really good read, check it out.

From what I've read, Milbury was fired because he refused to negotiate the 15-year deal, and Neil Smith was fired for the same reason. So, the Islanders became the ultimate laughingstock for no other reason than Wang wanted this absurd deal to happen.

When he was offered that contract that system proved to already be back to the pre-lockout days, so it's bs to play that card here. I look forward to seeing how far the other GMs want to pushy their pissy attitude. If Richards and Carter, the aim of the retaliation, play to potential they are going to cost multiple 1st rounders plus an unmatchable contract (they would be matched on any remotely feasible deal). Are other GMs really going to get into that heavy of a pissing match just to spite Clarke?

If they start signing guys to inflated deals out of spite, they're going to wrck their teams, because there won't be enough money for other guys they need. The Flyers had the money to spend, and no one should be whining about how they decide to spend it.

The only thing this could conceivably affect is arbitration. What I think will happen is you're going to see more teams walk away from arbitration awards. Which is probably why the GMs are so pissed, because they know they're going to lose players they wouldn't have before. The whole idea of arbitration under a salary cap is ridiculous anyway.

That miiiight get them into the playoffs. I had said in my predictions two weeks ago that Zherdev would be the make or break for Columbus' shot at the playoffs. Now, I'm not saying that Carter > Zherdev, but I think Carter is enough to get them in.
