The Babe, MJ, Gretzky & Jim Brown That was the original 4 I posted, until I realized no one in the U.S. cares about hockey. That's true but I think Gretzky dominated his sport to such a degree that he goes up there for sure. It's funny that we would have had the same order too, and I didn't see your post at the time I made mine.
Just John 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2006 I agree with Babe, MJ, and Gretzky. I'll say Montana to represent football, just to be different.
Guest Report post Posted July 3, 2006 I take MJ, Mays (I may catch heat) or Jackie Robinson, Gretzky and Joe Montana. Yeah, I'm catching heat for sure.

The Babe, MJ, Gretzky & Jim Brown What you said. If you wanted to add a woman, I guess Mia Hamm would work. Bebe Didrikson, Martina Navratilova, Bonnie Blair, Serena Williams, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert... would go ahead of Mia Hamm. Fökai 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2006 I don't know about Blair, either Williams' sister, BJK or Evert. Just a couple of great athletes that had no real effect on their sport that someone else didn't have before them. There is no predecessor to Hamm, and quite possibly no successor. She's responsible for any popularity the sport had after their World Cup win.
Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2006 That same popularity that lasted less then 5 years. BJK's impact was felt longer then 5 years, Serena and Venus's impact was obvious... I'll give you that Evert and Blair probably aren't at Hamm's level but you can't really deny the others.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2006 Muhammad Ali would absolutely have to be on there.
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2006 Jordan, Ruth, Jim Brown(or Montana) and Gretzky. You were on the ball. I'd go so far to say that by the time he retires, Tiger Woods could replace Gretzky.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 3, 2006 Aesthetics should really be considered here. Faces that are immediately identifiable. Muhammad Ali's "What's my name?" face, Babe Ruth glancing towards center field, Vince Lombardi looking elated, Michael Jordan (tongue extended)
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2006 Ok. Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Jesse Owens.
Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2006 I don't know why people would think Gretzky gets on there. Hockey was popular for about 10 years thanks to him. He is hardly an American icon compared to Robinson, Owens, Ali, Ruth, Jordan, Montana, Thorpe, Brown...

USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2006 I don't see why Jim Brown would be up there. He was never really "FOOTBALL". I can think of better runners than Brown, and better faces overall. Just a personal opinion. Agree with Ali, Jordan, Ruth and maybe Owens or Montana.
naiwf 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2006 I don't see why Jim Brown would be up there. He was never really "FOOTBALL". I can think of better runners than Brown, and better faces overall. Just a personal opinion. Agree with Ali, Jordan, Ruth and maybe Owens or Montana. Amongst his peers many considered Brown to be the greatest football player of all time, not just the greatest RB of his day. On a separate issue, if we're going to argue that hockey is irrelevant we can't have anyone from track and field or boxing on there either since those sports are fringe sports at best now too and haven't truly been popular since the '80s. Guest Felonies! Report post Posted July 3, 2006 It's not that hockey is irrelevant, it's just that it's hard to find a truly legendary American hockey player that's on par with the greats of other sports. Chris Chelios?
Slayer 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2006 Hell, it's hard to find a truly legendary American hockey player on par within the sport itself. Maybe Brett Hull, though that's a bit of gray area there.
