His status for next season will be determined by the type of surgery prescribed by Dr. James Andrews. "He's going to have surgery for sure -- season-ending surgery," Braves head trainer Jeff Porter said. "At this point yet, we don't know what he's going to have. There's still some question marks as to what's going on with the MRI." When Braves physicians looked at the MRI taken of Reitsma's right elbow on Monday, they determined there is definitely enough damage to prevent a return this year. But it will be Andrews who determines whether the right-handed reliever needs Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. Reitsma is scheduled to visit Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on July 17. If he doesn't need to undergo the Tommy John surgical procedure, during which a ligament is replaced into the damaged elbow area, Reitsma will likely need to have an ulnar nerve transposition. The latter procedure would require about six months of rehab, which is half of what is required with the former. Reitsma has been battling numbness in his right hand all season, but didn't tell the Braves until after his June 11 appearance in Houston. By that time, he'd blown four of 12 save opportunities and compiled a 9.11 ERA. A few days later, it was determined the numbness was being caused by bone spurs located in his elbow. He was placed on the disabled list on June 13 and returned on Saturday night, only to be bothered with the same ailment. He exited that appearance after hitting the Orioles' Miguel Tejada with a pitch. This has been a trying year for Reitsma, who entered this season with hopes of being able to hold on to the closer's role. During the previous two seasons, while working as both a closer and setup man, he appeared in nearly half of the Braves games. He made a franchise-record 84 appearances in 2004. vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2006 Is the competitive drive in atheletes so high that they'll continue to underperform while being seriously injured, risking long-term bodily injury instead of just...letting someone know so you can get professional medical attention? Yeah, he should have been checked out a while ago, but he thought he was fine. He wasn't fine, and shouldn't be in a Major League bullpen, healthy or not. He wasn't prepared mentally, which indicates that he could possibly have been thinking about the injury, but I don't know, odder things have happened. It said in the article that Reitsma was battling the numbness all season but didn't tell his coaches till after he bombed in Houston. You can work out to it and get all pumped up, it's safely masculine, not too ambitious or hard to discover. Nobody's blasting Strangeways, Here We Come in the clubhouse. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2006 The NY Yankees acquired Aaron Guiel off waivers from the Royals. This is a great, great acquisition. Guiel is like Bubba Crosby except that he can actually hit. If this guy is good, then why would the Royals place him on waivers? The Royals have a crowded outfield. Reggie Sanders, Joey Gathright and David DeJesus have starting spots, Emil Brown is the 4th outfielder, and Matt Stairs is DH/5th outfielder. They needed to clear a spot on the 40 man roster for yet another pitcher, so Guiel was designated for assignment. Any of those five are probably better hitters (Brown I'm not sure of, but he had a hot season last year). All of them would also help the Yankees as well. Looking over the numbers, I wasn't surprised to see the Royals ranked 13th in runs scored, but I was surprised to see they have scored more runs than the Oakland A's.
