OAO Raw Thread - July 10th, 2006

Recommended Posts

Why does everyone have such a hard on for Umaga? He's shit with the same shit gimmick every single week. Ooh! Thumb to the throat of death!!

It's not about Umaga. It's about AAE. He's the IWC hard-on of the month.

Well, that's cause if the hard on lasts for more than four weeks, we have to see a physician.

Yeah, i'm sure most smarks can't afford health insurance :D .

Well, we could have if Vince wouldn't have fired all of us.

I think the most irritating thing about Raw is listening to JR try to sell the show.

That, and Cena trying to copy Stone Cold Steve Austin out of the ring, and trying to copy The Rock when he's in the ring.

Edge and Foley are the only bright spots right now.

Stone? Rock? Next he's going to start acting like Val Venis!

Well, Psych looks interesting...

Only 2 minutes in.

Which sums the show up rather nicely. The highlight of the night: When Psych comes on after it's over

I turned off the last segment. I just don't put up with it, and I don't feel like I've wasted my time. If there's anything decent I missed, it will be repeated anyway.

You know, for all the talk of SD having a crap roster just take a look at Raw. I mean Viscera and Haas? Eugene in the main event? Jim Duggan even being on TV in 2006?

Oddly enough there was some decent stuff on this show tonight, which is why I don't consider it all time level bad (main event aside). The Edge/Cena stuff was good, I also liked the Flair/Foley segment though I have no idea why Flair would agree to get killed by the Big Show on ECW. I guess they have to do something on that show with Van Dam suspended though.

I guess Umaga got bumped for the Diva Search. I think I'd have rather seen him actually....at this point the Diva Search is like TV death, I immediately turned to the Home Run Derby.

It may be the beer talking, but that was awesome!

I was actually interested and amused by Viscera and Lillian at one time. I think one of the best Raw moments over the last couple years was seing Viscera sing, if only for the spectacle of it. Even though it has nothing to do with wrestling, that show would have been awesome if Vis and Lillian had sung a duet, instead of just Vis singing to her.

I still hope Lillian gets out of WWE.

She's better than this.

Its like a good actress that takes bad movies.

Lillian Garcia is the Nia Long of the WWE.

I wish they'd had the DX stuff first or at least middle, built to a Cena and Benjamin main event. Scrap the hotel beatdown, let Orton and Venis go longer, and have some kind of "comedy" at the hotel to end that before the main event. It's an obvious statement, but the belt should never get second billing on the list of angles.

Does anyone think Vince and Shane might finally get one over on DX in some fashion this Saturday, or will it be DX getting the last laugh for the sixth or seventh week in a row?

I think so, then DX will get them back even worse, and so on.

2002 seemed to place HHH vs. HBK (the first DX "reunion" above Rock vs. Brock) while 2005 had HBK and Hogan in the main event...mainly so Hogan could pose with a giant flag.

I agree with Gabe Sapolsky's philosophy on titles and the importance of the main event slot...(while it references his own promotion, I think it should apply for all of wrestling and something smarks around here should pay attention to.

Why does it have to be in the main event? This is something I actually get a kick out of. It’s like the internet fans think there is some unwritten booking rulebook and if you don’t follow that rulebook then what you are doing is wrong. There are no rules to booking and pro wrestling. It is just like movie making. If you ask any great producers or directors they will tell you that all the unwritten rules are there to be broken. It is the same way with booking pro wrestling...

Just because the World Title isn’t in the main event doesn’t mean the belt is any less of a focal point for the company or any less important. We are trying to create a flow to the shows that will maximize the fans enjoyment and take them on the ride. That is the main consideration when deciding what match goes where. I really laugh at all the people who seem to think there is some booking rulebook out there. Sure there are principals, but the bottom line is you always have to try new things and break the rules or everything would get stagnant.

True, but it's not good. Sounds like you agree. The belt gives everyone on the roster an angle, more or less, even if they'll never touch it, that should over any one feud or storyline.

Having weekly challengers for the belt, even non-title matches for a Val Venis, for example, would help keep things from getting stale. Having DX in the main event takes away from what every other wrestler is trying to accomplish, in storylines, at least, winning the title. I'm doing what I've got on some here for doing, complaining, but I did turn it off at the end ;) Overall, I didn't think it was a horrible show, the diva stuff made me laugh like I said, I thought the hotel beatdown was short and to the point even if I'd have done it different. Highlanders looked okay, glad they're going face at least to start, would have made no sense after their promos. Even the Visera/Haas deal, I was thinking it's going somewhere so that's a good thing, give it a shot instead of just dropping it. Did I miss Kane tonight?

Yeah, Viscera and Haas is the new version of Test/Steiner, except these guys are more heatless (I didn't even know that was possible).

I don't think Kane has a program at the moment now that the fake Kane angle has been dropped. Why not send him over to SD or even ECW for a while?

If it leads to them going out looking for women, etc, who knows, it could be funny, I'll wait before just giving up on it-like I nearly have DX.

Wait a minute.

Are you guys suggesting that HBK, HHH and the McMahons would somehow steal the spotlight at the expense of up and comers?

No, that can't be.

I don't know if they do it because they want to keep people down-that would be stupid and even with their faults theyre not stupid-or they (McMahons) think that's what people want to see.

When was the last Raw that was actually worth watching? I don't mean worth watching as in it was so shitty that you couldn't pass it up, I mean one that was actually GOOD.

Certainly not. Never. Not ever. Ever. Nope. No way.

There were some things about this show I liked and some I hated.

GOOD:

*The Edge-Cena interaction. Cena is much more tolerable when he is chasing the belt.

*Cena-Benjamin was good for what it was. I hate that damn STFU, though, because Cena uses NO PSYCHOLOGY to set it up!

*Melina-Trish match. Match was not great and not surprised at all by the result but I like both of them so it doesn't matter.

*Highlanders vs. Conway/Striker. I like Striker's gimmick because its like Dean Douglas (although Shane did a much better job with it). JR acted like the Highlanders being undefeated meant something but it really doesn't when there are like two real tag teams on RAW.

*Viscera and Haas turning on Lillian. Hey, at least this angle had some backstory.

BAD:

*The Diva Search. I hate it with a passion and also flipped to ESPN during it. Even worse its hosted by THE MIZ this year?!?

*Eugene-McMahon-DX interaction. For what it's worth I bet some interest group for the mentally challenged will send the WWE an angry letter tomorrow.

*Ric Flair vs. Big Show tomorrow night?...ON ECW?!?!? I'll tape it and give it a look later but I am not holding my breath at this one. I remember watching Nitro in April 1996 when Flair had Big Show in a figure-four and the Big Show powered out, chokeslammed him, and won the belt. I guess the writers thought we needed to see this match ten years in teh making! By the way, Heyman's whole "extreme entertainment" thing made me gag.

Overall, I was about 50-50 on RAW tonight. First hour was good and second hour was definitely not and I would have to say that the bad stuff outweighed the good stuff.

---

On a side note, is it possible for the WWE to be vulnerable to a hostile takeover bid since its publicly traded? I know it is probably outside the realm of possibility but in the boredom of the 2nd hour tonight I got to thinking about it randomly.

Okay, so WWE does "sports entertainment," not wrestling. All right then.

What's being thrown out now isn't entertaining, and since the wrestling has been almost completely phased out there's no longer any sport involved. What a hollow term.

I'm not even hating on Raw lately. I'm at the level of apathy now. I think the ECW relaunch was what did it, as well as the "we make movies" mentality going into overdrive since Wrestlemania. Maybe it's because I've been watching a lot of indy matches on YouTube lately, but it never hit me until recently how utterly devoid this supposed wrestling show is of wrestling. The ring doesn't even freakin' exist in this whole DX/McMahons storyline.

Yup Raw sucked again. I'm seriously getting tired of seeing shitty Raw's and the 50/50 shitty ECW shows. Hell I like watching Luca Libre in Spanish than watching Monday night Raw. WWE's product really needs to improve a lot.

Pretty sucky Raw except for the McMahons ruling the place while beating up 75% of the retards on the roster. (That would be a great gimmick in itself! Sneak attacking people like Snitsky and the Highlanders, just for cheap heat. All the while taunting them with their ability to not stand out in regular society as someone mentally handicapped.)

Side note: Did anyone else wish for an Eric Bischoff/3MW appearance when Edge told the guy he had "3 minutes" to get the champagne? It would've been awesome if Eric showed up as the manager of the hotel and did the 3MW schtick.

Yeah, when he said "3 minutes" I immediately said "or two fat guys will jump out of the closet and squash you."
