Baltimore is already demanding the moon, stars, Earth and the Sun from the Angels and even then they aren't happy with the talks. I really get the feeling you have a better chance of seeing the Orioles trying to make trades to improve the team for next year that won't involve Tejada moving off the team.

 

There was talk of Wood and Saunders from the Angels for Tejada and the Orioles weren't even that interested in that and wanted another high impact player. It just comes off like Baltimore has no interest in dealing him unless they get to take every prospect a team has for him. Which as an Orioles fan, I do like but it's just going to lead to Tejada being pissed off next year when the Orioles won't sign anyone.

 

I mean Jeff Conine and Kevin Millar? That helped the pitching and hitting out HOW exactly?

How many years are left on Tejada's contract? Also, how many on Thome's?

Tejada's signed through 2009, and Thome's signed through 2008, with an option for '09.

The thing about Tejada is he 32 years old, plays the worst SS defense in all of baseball and is owed $36 million through the end of the decade. You can't ask someone to take that sort of commitment on and then demand the world for him. Things don't work that way. The Orioles need a rebuilding plan, and that plan would probably work better without Tejada involved. But that's just an opinion.

Apparently, the Jays are in the lead in the Corey Lidle 'sweepstakes'. I don't see what the point there is, I wouldn't think he'd offer more than anyone out of AAA would give you as a 4th or 5th starter.

Lidle is also a hit of 3.3 million dollars. That gets you a 7-7 record with a 1.36 WHIP and a 4.74 ERA. Personally I don't think he is worth 3.3 million.

Ultimately I dont think Tejada will be traded this year, but its an inevitability he will be moved before his contract runs out, probably in an offseason deal instead of a deadline deal.

 

Benson definitely wont be dealt now (I doubt there was much of a chance anyway) since he has elbow problems.

 

Conine needs to be traded before he gets 107 more ABs and the guaranteed option year for 2007. Javy Lopez should be traded. I doubt anyone is desperate enough for SP that they'd go after Rodrigo Lopez but I could be surprised.

Lidle has historically pitched well in September, and he's played for teams in the middle of pennant races before. A team in the hunt rarely relies on late season callups in the rotation. Lidle's perfectly acceptable as a back of the rotation guy, but I wouldn't give up too much for him

I've come to determine that Buster Olney is either insane, extremely gullible, high on crack, or some combination of all 3. So far this trading deadline he has said the following regarding the Red Sox, including a new doozy that I will discuss at the end:

 

-Bobby Abreu for Trot Nixon and parts. This didn't make a lot of sense for the Sox seeing that the actual production between these two is fairly close, and Abreu has years at tens of millions left on his contract whereas Trot is up this year and the Sox are ready to begin the Wily Mo era next year

 

-Soriano for Pedroia, Hansen, and Lester - Yes the Red Sox are going to trade the future of their pitching staff and infield for a rental that plays the exact position as Manny.

 

-Peavy for Lowell - That's it. No prospects. No money. Straight up. There isn't a GM in the free world that would do that deal, no matter how bad you need a 3B.

 

and finally, the big one

 

- Miguel Cabrera to the Red Sox - Are you kidding me? The Marlins are going to give up one of the most phenomenal talents in the game to the Sox at the trade deadline, with no bidding war taking place beforehand? That's insane, and as strong as the farm system is, they don't have the guys to that deal.

 

Go home, Buster! Keep the Yankees' dick in your mouth, at least we don't have to hear you speak then.

Conine is too old now but hopefully someone will take a risk, they can't get anyone to take Javy, and Rodrigo was being talked about in a move for Abreu or Burrell but that deal collapsed when the O's wouldn't take any part of the contract.

Since the Philly deal collapsed, that does seem to be the one most talked about. He's leaving Baltimore for somewhere, it's not a question of if so much as when. With Tejada, they can calm him down by having a very strong offseason.

 

I wouldn't mind the Angels deal of Woods and Saunders, but there is just no way the Angels would offer that and there is no way the Orioles would accept it. Maybe if the Angels offered up an over the hill worthless player with a famous name, the O's would jump all over it.

 

Perhaps the Cubs should call, offer up Prior, Wood, Perez and Cedeno. The Orioles would jump all over that one.

Yeah, the "Cerveceros" thing is kinda lame, if you ask me. I mean, they already did a Negro League uniform earlier this year, but that made sense, since it was the uniform of the old Milwaukee Bears (Negro League team that played one season in Milwaukee). The Cerveceros thing has no historical connection. It's just blatant pandering to the Hispanic community, along with this new sausage.

 

Oh well, if it makes them enough money to buy some bullpen help, I guess it all works out.

Not that it's a huge surprise, but Carlos Lee is as good as gone from the Brew Crew. He rejected a four-year, $48 million deal. Someone else is going to have to overpay for his services.

The Milwaukee Brewers are trading slugger Carlos Lee to the Texas Rangers as part of a multi-player deal, ESPN.com learned Friday.

 

The Brewers are sending Lee, minor-league outfield prospect Nelson Cruz and a player to be named later to the Rangers for relief pitcher Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix.

 

Both teams are checking for any medical issues before consummating the deal.

That seems pretty awful for the Brewers.

 

Cruz is the same age as Nix and putting up better numbers in AAA, Mench is mediocre and Cordero is fine but that hardly sounds like a package worthy of your key trading chip. Looks like they may have made a less than stellar move just for the sake of getting back players they can use this year to "make a run".

 

Of course Lee going to a team not in the Abreu running makes me happy.

That is an awful trade for the Brewers. They should have waited til the deadline and when Soriano was about to be dealt. They just lost a ton of leverage.

I was actually surprised that the Brewers got that much for him. Milwaukee is not interested in minor leaguers, or holding out to get draft picks. They want guys who can come in and help them now because they still have a chance at the playoffs. The bullpen is awful, and Cordero will help immediately. Mench is a downgrade from Lee, sure, but not so much that it will devastate their offense. I give a mild thumbs up.

Wait, why do people think this was a bad deal for the Brewers? Both teams got what they needed to compete this year, and didn't give up anything that will hurt them long term. Even though this has been deemed a "seller's market", it's obvious that the market has shifted in the past year or two. Teams are not giving up talent for rentals. The Brewers recognized that and made the best deal for themselves.

I don't think the Brewers got ripped off at all. I think they got a good package for a guy who just turned down a contract extention offer.

I think the Brewers made out fine in this deal. They obviously weren't going to get any huge names in this deal. You have to remember that Carlos Lee is probably only going to be a Ranger for two months or so. No team was going to give up a supserstar for a quick "rental."

 

Brewers got some players to fill some holes, and are basically major league ready. That's what they needed.
