Everyone talking head says he would definitely want the extension picked up, yet only one person has actually quoted him (Randy Miller, local beat write) about the issue and Abreu seemed open to lowering his expectations depending on where he would be going. Given he has a house in NY, you would think that the Yankees would be one of his higher choices. Maybe all it would take to send him to the Yankees would be to give him a few million to buy out the NTC (have to give him something to pacify the union). Then all of a sudden there isn't the panic about having to pick up 18 mil in 08 and a deal could be much simpler.

Stark namedropped shortstop CJ Wilson and pitcher Steven White. It would be nice if Stark would double check his reports and realize that the Yankees' prospect is CJ Henry, and that CJ Wilson is the Rangers' pitching prospect. It would also be nice if the prospects had any appreciable baseball ability.

Even though I am not a fan of that one, at least something resembling talent is coming back. Especially given reports of how Boston and the two NY teams don't need to pick up the option for Abreu to waive his NTC. There is no excuse for not getting quality back from those teams now. Wow, CJ Henry, it's like Greg Golson in SS flavor.

The teams had yet to decide which players or prospects will go from the Yankees to Philadelphia, Olney reported. Abreu is hitting .277 with 8 home runs and 65 RBI in 99 games. He has a career batting average of .301 with 198 home runs and 841 RBI over 10 seasons. Lidle, a right-hander, is 8-7 with a 4.74 ERA in 21 starts in 2006. In eight seasons he has a career mark of 78-69 with a 4.54 ERA. Abreu was in the Phillies' starting lineup Sunday but was pulled for Shane Victorino 10 minutes before their game with the Florida Marlins. I hate the Yankees

Hopefully he was just overstating, but since they are talking about a tentative deal now there is at least some actual information floating at this point. ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported the Yankees will send 18-year-old minor-league shrotstop C.J. Henry -- their No. 1 pick in 2005 -- and 27-year-old left-handed reliever Matt Smith. The Phillies will also pick one other minor-leauge player from an agreed-upon list, while the Yankees will take on responsibility for Abreu and Lidle's contracts. Where is hanging oneself smiley face when you need one?

the pinjockey Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Honestly, if this is the deal and the list doesn't include a choice of Hughes/Tabata/Clippard/Duncan then it puts anything Wade did to shame. Even if Clippard and Duncan are on the list it is still awful. To go into the trade deadline with a player of Abreu's caliber and the best pitcher on the market and come out with this is just......I really can't think of a bad enough word. They still probably have to move Dellucci to come out of this trading season with something of real value.

They probably got slightly better offers prospect wise from other teams, but would have had to pick up too much of the money. Seems reasonable to me. But I'm horribly biased.

Gillick himself has said he does not believe in big money to FA pitchers (so no Zitos coming here). So the whole idea of "well he is really trading Abreu for the ace he will sign this offseason" is faulty. c.) Abreu is better than any position player who is going to be on the FA market this year anyway. So it would be pointless savings

The Yankees would get Abreu and right-hander Cory Lidle in the deal. In return, the Phillies will get four minor leaguers — Class A shortstop C.J. Henry, the Yankees' first pick in the 2005 draft, Class AAA left-hander Matt Smith and two others. In addition, the Yankees are expected to pick up the remainder of the roughly $19 million owed to Abreu, who was slated to be in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins but was a last-minute scratch. Abreu, 32, has given assurances that he will waive his no-trade clause for the Yankees, presumably in exchange for the exercising of his $16 million option for 2008. The Abreu deal with the Yankees, when completed, likely would be perceived as a massive salary dump by the Phillies. Neither of the Yankees' top prospects, Class AA right-hander Philip Hughes nor Class A outfielder Jose Tabata, will be included in the trade. With the deal, the Phillies would clear approximately $20 million in payroll. Abreu, 32, is owed more than $4 million this season and $15 million next season. In exchange for Abreu waiving his no-trade clause, the Yankees are expected to exercise his $16 million option for 2008. Lidle, 34, is owed nearly $1.5 million, and will be a free agent at the end of the season. The Phillies are expected to move several other players in addition to Abreu, including right-handed starter Jon Lieber and left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes. They have been unable to find a taker for left fielder Pat Burrell, who, like Abreu, has a large salary and no-trade clause. Now that the Phillies have apparenlty traded Abreu, they are likely to keep outfielder David Dellucci, then attempt to re-sign him as a free agent. Dellucci, batting .311 in a reserve role, has been the Philadelphia player most in demand on the trade market due to his pending free agency and modest $950,000 salary. The Phillies' motivations for trading Abreu and others would be to change their chemistry and gain significant financial flexibility. During his tenure with the Mariners, Phillies general manager Pat Gillick traded outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. after the 1999 season and lost shortstop Alex Rodriguez as a free agent the following year. Gillick kept the team strong by reallocating the team's resources, gaining the rights to Japanese right fielder Ichiro Suzuki and acquiring several lesser veterans, building the 2001 Mariners into a 116-win juggernaut.
