MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Mel Gibson was arrested early Friday for suspicion of driving under the influence, a Sheriff's Department spokesman said.

Gibson's vehicle was speeding eastbound on the Pacific Coast Highway when officers stopped him at 2:36 a.m., Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Gibson, 50, was booked at the Lost Hills Sheriff's station at 4:06 a.m., according to department records. The actor-director was cited and released, Whitmore said. Bail was set at $5,000.

"The investigation is ongoing," Whitmore said. "As we would do with anyone, we don't want to release any more since the information is fragmentary."

Gibson's spokesman, Alan Nierob, said he was looking into the matter.

Gibson won a best-director Oscar for 1995's "Braveheart."

Like his 2004 religious blockbuster, "The Passion of the Christ," which was shot in Aramaic and Latin, his new film, "Apocalypto," was done in an ancient tongue, Yucatec Maya.

Gibson has starred in the "Lethal Weapon" and "Mad Max" films, "What Women Want" and "The Man Without a

Face," among other movies.

*laughs at the jewish stuff*

Good lord. I'm slightly doubtful because it almost seems too perfect, after all that anti-semitic stuff after the release of Passion of the Christ.

edit: I see there's audiotape and the original report. Ok then, I believe it.

This is going to be funny. I wonder what all the people who defended Mel from the anti-semetic charges will think now.

I never quite had a strong opinion on that, but I thought maybe, when, during the Passion controversy, he did some interview and Diane Sawyer (or someone similar) threw a softball question about the Holocaust to him, soft enough that if he gave the obvious answer it'd do a world of good, but he said something like "you know, lots of people died during the holocaust, and yeah, some of them were jews" or something to that effect.

As the two stood next to the hood of the patrol car, the deputy asked Gibson to get inside. Deputy Mee then walked over to the passenger door and opened it. The report says Gibson then said, "I'm not going to get in your car," and bolted to his car. The deputy quickly subdued Gibson, cuffed him and put him inside the patrol car.

His career's officially over now right?

This is the same Hollywood where you can get caught doing coke and fucking teenagers and still make a decent career out of it. Why should Jew-hating be any different?

Gibson seeks meeting with Jewish leaders 36 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Mel Gibson on Tuesday apologized for making anti-Semitic remarks after his recent arrest for drunken driving and asked to meet with members of the Jewish community to begin a "path for healing."

"There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark," Gibson said in a statement.

"I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested," he added.

Gibson, who directed 2004's blockbuster movie "The Passion of The Christ" about the last hours of the life of Jesus, was caught speeding in his car in the early morning last Friday, and he went on a rant in which he is widely reported to have said "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department report, parts of which have appeared on celebrity Web site TMZ.com, is laced with anti-Semitic statements and expletives said by the actor.

The report said an opened bottle of tequila was found in the car, and that at one point Gibson tried to evade arrest.

But it has been the anti-Semitic remarks that have raised the biggest outcry from members of the Jewish community in and out of Hollywood because before "Passion," the Oscar-winning director of "Braveheart" and star of the "Lethal Weapon" movies denied he or the movie were anti-Semitic.

His statement on Tuesday sought a meeting with Jewish community leaders in which he could explain his actions.

"I'm not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one-on-one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing," Gibson said.

He said he has begun "an ongoing program of recovery," but admitted "I cannot do it alone."

"I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery," Gibson said.

I smell a sitcom!

Hollywood is so hypocritical it's not even funny anymore.

When conservative Mel Gibson makes anti-semitic remarks, he gets crucified & may never work in Hollywood again.

When liberal Bush-hater Cindy Sheehan makes anti-semitic remarks, they make a movie about her with Susan Sarandon as the star.

I love watching Hollywood's hatred of Bush press slam their principles & beliefs.

(Yes, I am aware that there is not one Allmighty Hollywood, it's easier to type one word than typing "all the different production companies & studios." You've found me out, I'm lazy. )

What'd she say? I'm not a fan, but I bet she didn't run around drunk, bang her head against a police partition ranting about the 'fucking Jews.'

And that movie will make approximately $0.

Cindy Sheehan Denies Anti-Israel Remarks.

August 16, 2005 6:30 a.m. EST

Douglas Maher - All Headline News Staff Reporter

New York, NY (AHN) - Anti-War protestor Cindy Sheehan makes an appearance on CNN's "360 With Anderson Cooper" Monday night, and denies remarks that her son Casey Sheehan had "joined the Army to protect America and not Israel". Her controversial comments were put on the record just a few days ago in a letter to ABC's Nightline.

The letter reads as follows:

"Am I emotional? Yes, my first born was murdered. Am I angry? Yes, he was killed for lies and for a PNAC Neo-Con agenda to benefit Israel. My son joined the Army to protect America, not Israel.Am I stupid? No, I know full-well that my son, my family, this nation, and this world were betrayed by George [W.] Bush who was influenced by the neo-con PNAC agenda after 9/11. We were told that we were attacked on 9/11 because the terrorists hate our freedoms and democracy...not for the real reason, because the Arab-Muslims who attacked us hate our middle-eastern foreign policy. That hasn't changed since America invaded and occupied Iraq...in fact it has gotten worse."

Monday night on CNN Sheehan tells Cooper, "I didn't -- I didn't say -- I didn't say that my son died for Israel. I've never said that. I saw somebody wrote that and it wasn't my words. Those aren't even words that I would say. I do believe that the Palestinian issue is a hot issue that needs to be solved and it needs to be more fair and equitable but I never said my son died for Israel."

Cooper asks numerous times if she was sure whether or not if she said the statement but Sheehan denies the remarks.

The nightline letter is confirmed by ABC News which says that Mrs. Sheehan had indeed signed her name to the letter.

----------

She's said a lot more anti-Israel crap to her masses, but typically tones it down, or denies it outright to the manstream press.

I'm not defending Mel's comments, just merely pointing out the typical Hollywood hypocrisy.

Mel should be old enough to realize, as a celebrity if you do dumbass things, not only will word get out, but chances are someone will have it on tape. Alcoholism is not an excuse for being a dumbass, especially if he would have killed someone with his car.

Yes, you can compare the two.

Sheehan has come out with a strong anti-Israel stance. Sheehan blames Israel and the American neo cons (read, Jews) for the war in Iraq and wants Israel out of "Palestine".

Many Jewish groups have said her statement amounts to anti-Semitism. The statement wasn't merely a criticism of foreign policy but a traditional blood libel blaming Jews for her sons death. The same old conspiracy theories of the hidden hand of Jews controlling everything.

Mel blames the Jews for all the wars in the world.

Cindy blames the Jews for her son's death for a war started with Jewish interests in mind.

They are totally comparable.

Please tell me you're being sarcastic.

"Every single war that ever happened is your fault!" is not the same thing as "My son got killed in a war which I believe you guys caused, so it's your fault!"

One of those is, at the very least, a somewhat understandable way for a grieving mother to express her grief.

The other is a drunken lunatic rambling.
