If thats supposedly the main problem you have with Abreu, thats sad. Give me something else. Maybe he walks too much? Has a .320 batting average with RISP? Is very efficient at stealing bases? Has a strong arm? What else have you got?

He's not a team leader.

Nor, is he sufficiently clutch.

.320 with runners in scoring position, with like 54 RBIs isn't clutch?

And he didn't come here to be the team's only leader.

I will say that I was sad for a second when Bell got traded because he hit my favorite Phillies home run ever a few years back, Bottom 9, 2 out, 0-2, in September (I believe against the Expos, maybe Nationals).

Hey, TSN just cut out in the middle of the Jays game. Probably for the best.

The road trip that killed their chances last year was a little later in the season, but had basically the same effect as this one. Hopefully they can stay up over .500 this time.

I find it cute that someone with 2006 Chokers League of America members Morrison, Nash, and Nowitski in his sig/avatar calls me out for saying I hate Abreu's ability to be clutch. You must have a thing for losers.

It's Nowitzki there.

And unless you have proof on how unclutch he is, I think it's safe to say that you should keep your mouth shut. I can't take a guy seriously if he thinks David Bell is better than Bobby Abreu.

EDIT: Sorry I just thought it was ironic that you a Philly fan, me being a Yankee fan..and me having a thing for losers. Just wanted to get that out.

The last page and a half of this thread is like someone posed the challenge to cut down a good player by throwing objectivity out the window.

And Aaron Rowand isn't Mr. Fantastic, so I don't know why you expected his arm to stretch that far for a ball that was quite a bit ways over a WALL. I guess if he'd broken his face on said wall, you'd be happy.

"I can't take a guy seriously if he thinks David Bell is better than Bobby Abreu."

Stop making up ridiculous statements to put yourself over. Anyone with a brain knows Abreu is better than Bell. Contribute something.

"me being a Yankee fan..and me having a thing for losers"

DAMN STRAIGHT. I mean, who was the team that completed the BIGGEST CHOKE IN THE HISTORY OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS? Oh yeah, the '04 Yankees. :) Bobby's gonna be a really good fit for y'all.

You're telling ME to contribute something? The same guy that likes Rowand because he runs through walls and hate Abreu because he doesn't run through walls enough? You really are a retard.

That's MORE statements you've completely made up.

I even flat out said that Abreu was clearly BETTER than Rowand. Are YOU retarded?

I still think they can get 85-86 wins. That's not a bad season, although short of expectations/hopes/dreams/etc.

The pitching staff needs a serious overhaul in the offseason.

So you rather have the worse player? I guess that should make you retarded.

Serious Q I noted w/ Wildcard analysis:

Al, has MLB expressed interest in bringing 2 more teams to the AL to even up each league's # of teams? Is there a target date?

I hope they're not seriously thinking of that. The talent pool is diluted enough as it is.

.300+ average with 130 RBIs wasn't clutch last year.

Abreu is way behind pace. He should be publicly hung.

Just let Cena experience Abreu half jogging after a ball hit to the short porch, then misplaying it into a "triple", when an adequate RF would have caught it. Anyone who has seen him playing regularly KNOWS that he is a loafer who would not hustle if it meant saving his life.

Twins are fading fast, 2.5 behind the South Siders. They better get it together.

So we're talking about Cliff Floyd now?

I'm pretty sure Abreu is a better than Sheffield at RF.

I'd say in the next ten years we expand to 32.

Bud Selig has expressed no desire to expand anytime in the near future.

To answer CanadianChris, I don't believe there is any dilution in the talent base. Is there really any meaningful difference between having the best 750 players or the best 800 players making up the major leagues? People forget there were bad players even when there were 16 players in the league. I think MLB could easily take two more teams. The problem is that you really run into problems if you go past 32, and also that limits the possible relocation threats. It's easier to threaten to move a team when there are viable alternatives.

Call me crazy, but if the embargoes between here and Cuba fall, I think Havana would be a great place for an MLB team.

Cliff Floyd is not an "elite" player, and Sheffield at least tries in the outfield. When Abreu costs the Yankees a game against Boston because he slows up 20 feet shy of the wall and the ball lands on the warning track you'll remember this day.

You can say the same thing about Manny Ramirez.

Does that mean that Manny sucks too? He half-heartedly runs out grounders. And he can be pretty lazy in the field.

It's all in the eye of the beholder. People choose to see Abreu as a loafer. He's a pretty damn productive loafer...
