The Heavyweight Division

Boxing's Heavyweight division looks like a wasteland these days. John Ruiz is still hanging around, Evander Holyfield refuses to face reality, and a 7 ft. Russian sideshow holds a world title.

In there any hope on the horizon for fans of the big men, or are boxing fans in for several more years of Heavyweight futility?

It would help if the top heavyweights fought on some sort of semi-regular basis. When you're thinking that there might be a big fight a year down the line, and there might not even be one then, it's pretty hard to get interested. And no, Klitschko or Ruiz versus a jobber doesn't count as a big fight.

How is anyone gonna beat that 7 foot Russian guy anyway? I'm no boxing expert and my interest has waned in recent years but that guy is ridiculous.

He's horrible.

John Ruiz and Larry Donald both got robbed in the desicions against him. He's going to get his ass kicked if he fights a Top 10 HW.

I thought Samuel Peter was going to be a sure thing. Honestly, John Ruiz makes me not want to watch boxing.

Peter could still be a great fighter. He's fighting James Toney soon, and I really think he has a good chance to KO him.

His only lost is to Wladimir Klitschko, in a fight where Peter knocked him down 3 times. So don't count him out.

James Toney knocked out? I doubt it.

James Toney doesn't have the desire to box anymore, and is only fighting for a paychecks, which explains why he's been out of shape his last few fights.

Peter certainly has the power to knock anyone out in the divison, but the question is can he land a solid punch on Toney. Who knows, anything can happen.

Toney's been out of shape for over a decade.

But not as bad as he has for years. He's enterting in at almost 240 pounds, it seems like he doesn't even care about winning.

If he comes in anything past 235, I wouldn't be suprised if Peter won.

One problem is that Don King wants a HW tournament, but only for fighters he has under his umbrella. For awhile he seemed open to the winner of his tounry taking on Klitscho but who knows now.

I know one problem is that too many heavyweight title bouts get put on PPV simply because they are title fights, and people are just not going to pay that kind of money to see guys they don't believe in.

Goodbye Hasim Rahman.

I thought Rock would get knocked out in the 9th. I don't know who would pay for that PPV.

Samuel Peter vs. James Toney on Showtime Sept. 2nd.

Most people are picking Toney to win, fighting on the inside, thinking he is too crafty......

I'm picking him too. Peter's primarily a power puncher, and there's no heavyweight currently active that's better at avoiding big shots with subtle things like shoulder movement and rolling his neck. He has him beat by miles in experience, and prepares phenomenally well mentally. Also, he's one of the best in the world at fighting while fatigued, so even if Peter does land some good bombs or work the body extensively, Toney's still dangerous.

I think it might be during one of Showtime's free preview weekends too.

It's not, but Corrales vs Casamayor III is on a free preview weekend in October.

I lost interest in the Heavyweight division when Klitschko lost to Lewis because of his busted eye.

I watched that fight again after the fact. Initially, I was pretty pissed because I thought the stoppage totally saved Lewis, but realistically, Klitschko was starting to take a LOT of punishment on that side of his face due to the blood-spewing gash. Lewis eventually would've stopped him anyway, I think.

Even if Toney wins, I can't see him becoming a champion.

He lost his chance when he tested positive after the Ruiz fight.

Barrett is facing the sideshow Valuev in the fall. Hopefully he gets rid of this clown for good.
