Chuck/Wandy OFF

Recommended Posts

"It appears the much-anticipated mixed martial arts bout between rival champions Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva, scheduled for November, might be off.

"I don't even know if Silva's going to happen," said Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He cited problems in dealing with the Japan-based Pride Fighting Championships that is home to Silva.

White said UFC 65 will instead probably feature Liddell against Tito Ortiz in a rematch of UFC 47 in 2004.

The Liddell-Silva bout was considered a blockbuster matchup, finally bringing the rival UFC and Pride organizations together

Liddell (18-3-0) is the current UFC light-heavyweight champion at 205 lb."

Calgary Sun Article

I knew this was too good to be true. The supposed 3-fight deal Wandy had signed with UFC was the tip-off here.

Well the Calgary Sun isn't exactly the first place I get my news from, but it's bound to pop up on the 'Dog, MMAWeekly, or Kakutougi sooner or later.

I LIVE in Calgary. And they are not the best newspaper in the city.

Eh, who cares. It was going to be a good, fresh fight and all, but we all knew the fight was near doom from them minute it was announced. It was contingent on Wand and Chuck staying injury free, neither guy getting torn up in their respective matches (and two possible chances for that with Wand) as well neither sides ego's or sensibilities getting in the way.

Plus the rumored replacement of Chuck/Tito 2 is kind of doubtful according to the latest (8/10) Orange County Register MMA Column:

It looks like the third fight between Tito Ortiz of Huntington Beach and Ken Shamrock could land on Spike TV’s “UFC Fight Night 7” on Oct. 10 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. ...

Yeah that fight will definately wear Tito down. I dont' think he'll be in any shape to fight for at least 45 minutes after that one...

I'm sure it isn't. The <insert city here> Sun is pretty synonymous with "crap" in Canada...

Apparently the negotiations are currently off because UFC does not want to match PRIDE's fight purse for Wand and PRIDE wants a cut of the PPV revenue. Dana basically announced the fight while negotiations were ongoing. If Wand is healthy after the OWGP he's likely to be used for PRIDE's USA debut now. I think Dana basically jumped the gun by announcing the match up before contracts had been signed and also shot himself in the foot by doing so. I can't really blame PRIDE for wanting a decent amount of money for their MW champion to compete and for themselves considering the financial setback of losing their Japanese TV deal with Fuji TV.

Well that sucks.

As far as Tito vs. Ken goes, they need to give this thing a rest. I like Shamrock but he is done, and has been for years. These fights serve no purpose - there is almost no chance Shammy can win and if he does win it makes Tito look awful.

I'd love to see Shamrock just beat the everloving shit out of Tito, simply because he's the underdog and I think Tito comes off like a pompous ass moreso than Shamrock. Too bad I'll never see it happen.

It seems Dana wanted PRIDE to pay half of Wand's salary and PRIDE basically have said "If he is on your show, you should pay him. We paid for your fighters to appear on our shows, you should pay for ours to appear on your show. Why should we pay half his wage when he is not fighting on our show and you are the one who wanted to book the fight?" Apparently UFC wouldn't book Baroni against Rich Franklin which has also annoyed PRIDE since they are risking the reputation of one of their champions but UFC is unwilling to risk the reputation of Franklin even in a non title match.

I expect a bunch of SD posts to claim that Dana is scurred of Wanderlei.

Yes and lots of "nuthugging" and "Rickson by Armbar" at random and obscure moments. I hate that place.

I was thinking that Tito was a major dick and Ken was all respectable and whatnot, but TUF 3 really put Tito in a better light and now I think most people would like to see him beat up on Ken.

Shamrock's done, once they figure out that there's not money to be made with him they'll cut him off.

And what can Ken say to hype the fight? Of course you're supposed to talk about beating up the guy, but he's gotten his ass kicked twice now by him and hasn't looked good in years.

I have no clue why he continues to embarrass himself. If he retired 5 years ago he would have had a somewhat decent record and been looked at in a much higher regard than he is now.

Ken is 2-6 in his last 8 fights. And his losses to Tito, Fry, Franklin, Fujita...hell, all of his recient losses have been embarassing. And one of those wins was to a guy named Sam Atkins, who has a record of 7-15 or something.

After Tito puts him away again I just hope he's gone

You can't knock guys for wanting to keep going. I've never understood that, like people that bagged on Jordan for coming back again.

These guys do well in their primes because they have the drive, the same drive that makes them want to keep going as they decline. 'Preserve the legacy' is bullshit. Some guy should give up doing what he loves to do just because you can't bother to mentally segregate his prime years from his later years?

I think this fight is still possible, although doubtful. with Goldy saying new son the "Ultimate Grudge Match" obviously pointing to Shanrock - Ortiz III gives some hope for the Wandy/Chuck still being on. I doubt it though, instead of Chuck fighting again in November they will have him wait til Superbowl Sunday, provided he beats Babalu. Fuck giving Tito a shot when he beats shamrock again, make Babalu/Ortiz happen, it is a fresh fight in the division, although it will leave Chuck without an opponent for when he fights, unless he loses then he can fight a contender other than Babalu/Tito, but still who else can compete in the Octagon with Chuck other than those two( of the fighters in the UFC).

There's a difference between being a shell of your former self who can barely win fights over the last five years versus being a deteriorating version of a great fighter. And Shamrock wasn't lighting the world on fire to begin with.

I'd stop because I continue to get beat up every time I step in and because my record over the last five years is worse than Sam Adkins.

Dude really you are trying to flip this but it isn't work. Shamrock could have been remembered as somebody, now his legacy is shit because he can't win a fight. He needs to hang up, he's too old, let go its over.

Nobody listen to techno.

I understand Ken's desire and whatnot to fight, maybe he didn't save his money. But it's kinda like Evander Holifiled. Sure, there's a market to see him, but he's lost too much of his step while the guys around him get better.

Randy knew when it was his time to leave

^^^ Exactly. Randy Couture got beat by the best in his weight division twice. He knew there was nothing left for him to do and he bowed out gracefully before he ruined his record worse than it was...
