Favourite Match Battle

Recommended Posts

Guest wildpegasus

I thought this might be interesting. This will be similar to the Deathvalley threads where people were people were choosing their favourite wrestlers but instead of that I'm going to select a couple of different matches and see what everyone's favourites are. Of course, I'm going to try to get controversy going and pick bouts which will divide people/make them think twice about things and of course bouts that bring out the passion in people.

The first match battle will be

Eddie Guerrero vs Bradshaw Judgement Day (the blood match)

vs

Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio Jr. from Haloween Havoc 97

2 matches which I think most people here will have seen.

In one corner we have the underdog Eddie vs Bradshaw match which is a bout that several hardcores have taken a great fondness to. Looked over initially by many fans it has now recieved second looks by many wrestling fanatics. Some have called it one of the best WWF/WWE matches of all time.

In the other corner we have the odds on favourite going in. Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio Jr. A well known match that is perhaps most known for its incredible athletic difficulty. At the same time it featured a classic underdog story and a great heel preformance by Eddie Guerrero.

So what's your favourite bout? Let the first battle commence!

The Havoc match. Of course, putting anything against that match for me will almost certainly lose.

The JD match has its merits, but the DQ finish wasn't necessary and it really lives off Eddie's blade job, as shown by your parenthetical description. Take that away and the match becomes very average. Hell, have Eddie do a normal WWE-level blade, and the match is only decent, yet forgettable.

It'll be intersting to see how many votes Eddie vs Bradshaw can muster up. While Rey vs Eddie is almost always praised, Eddie vs Bradshaw has a lot of different viewpoints. Some think it is just eh while some think it is one of the best WWF/WWE matches of all time.

Eddie/JBL is vastly underrated, but Havoc gets the nod.

I'll keep the ball rolling:

Bret vs. Bulldog SS 92

OR

Bret vs. Austin WM 13

Bret vs Bulldog might have been the best match of Bret's career, and almost certainly the best of Davey Boy's.

WM13 might get the nod due to it being a fantastic feud and the double-turn being a corner-turner for WWF. Discounting all storylines and what have you, I think I'd rather watch Bret/Bulldog.

Bret/Austin and this one's not even close for me. I think Bret/Davey from Summer Slam is vastly overrated. Bulldog was so blown up it wasn't even funny. There was enough chinlocking in this match to make Orton and Christian shake their heads. That's not to say these guys are bad, though, I think this was just more of an off-performance. I did like their IYH match in 95 quite a bit (one of the more overlooked good matches in my opinion). I just think the large crowd and happy ending tends to cause people to forget how boring most of the SS match was.

Another one to think about... Better Angle match:

Kurt Angle vs. Steve Austin (Summer Slam 2001)

OR

Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit (Royal Rumble 2003)

I havent seen Eddie/JBL so Eddie/Rey wins by default for me

Austin/Hart over Bulldog/Hart 1

and Angle-Austin just barely over Angle-Benoit, even though the dq finish may hurt it, that match had a different feel to itand a frantic pace, and a sense of urgency with Angle trying to win abck the belt for the WWF, and the crowd was hot for it. Angle-Benoit built up nicely and was a solid wrestling match, that won over the crowd as it went on.

both matches are great though

Heres a new one -

Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat (WM3)

Randy Savage vs. Ultimate Warrior (WM7)

Warrior and Savage at Mania. That match is freaking awesome. Warrior vs Savage was a great, epic bout that told a cool story.

And although it's not part of the actual in ring action the angle that finishes playing out in the end is perhaps the most emotional moment overall in the history of professional wrestling.

How about:

Ladder Match for Intercontinental Title:

Razor Ramon © vs. Shawn Michaels: WrestleMania X

VS.

Ladder Match for Intercontinental Title:

Shawn Michaels © vs. Razor Ramon: Summerslam 95

I too have to say Savage/Warrior.

Savage/Steamboa's allure has always slightly escaped me. Really good match? Sure. I think part of it is I didn't watch wrestling at the time, so seeing the match without the buildup hurts. Plus it was overhyped before I saw it, and I always thought the ending was a bit of a schmozz.

The two ladder matches are really tough. #1's a sentimental favorite, #2's probably slightly better, as they built on the first match for some extra depth.

Eddie/Rey by a mile.

Bret/Davey Boy is a great carry job, with an awesome crowd, but I gotta still go with Austin/Bret. Both guys were just rarin' to go, the crowd was very hot, and their styles, disparate as they were, complimented one another quite nicely. The awesome double-turn is the icing on the cake.

I never saw Angle/Austin, so I can't judge.

When was the last time you saw somebody in the audience cry?

Steiners vs. Sting/Luger from Superbrawl 91

OR

Steiners vs. Bret/Owen from WWF World Tour '94

I'd probably be the only one to pick the second one.

Not true. I'm there with ya.

And I'll go with the Summer Slam ladder match over the WM one. Watched 'em back to back not too long ago and was shocked at how much better I thought SS was.

Haven't seen Savage/Warrior, so I can't answer that one.

For the original match choice I'm going to give it to the Eddie/JBL match. I enjoyed Eddie far more toward the end of his WCW run and his entire WWE/Indy run. I just watched the Rey vs Eddie Guerrero match for the second time last year when I bought the Eddy DVD and it just fell flat for me.

Steiners vs Sting/Luger for me. The match is just all out, awesome, intense hard hitting action for the duration of it.. Sting leaping over the top rope is forever engrained in my mind.

People were crying after Benoit won the title but I don't think you actually got to see anyone in the crowd crying. Kobashi vs Misawa from 03 if I remember correctly had crying in it but yeah; I can't remember people so openly crying on camera as they were after Warrior vs Savage.
