Bob Dylan has weird taste in opening acts, especially considering I just read an article where he said that there haven't been any good CDs to come out in the last 20 years, and that all new music is just a bunch of overlapping noise. Nothing against The Ranconteurs or the Foo Fighters or even Kings of Leon...as much as I dislike them. I just...couldn't see Bobby Zim rocking out to em. Either way, I'd like to see Dylan live, but I don't have a burning desire to. And all of those arena shows are far away from me.

i have a morbid interest in seeing him nowadays. though i am liking his latest albums mroe with time. i think his new one may be the best of the bunch.

I haven't listened to any "new" Dylan in years. I'm probably just being a dick, but if I wanna hear Dylan, I'll just listen to Highway 61 or Freewheelin' or Blonde on Blonde etc. I'll probably check out his new CD sooner or later, even if, in the article I mentioned, he said that his new record sounds like crap.

I really enjoyed his two most recent cds...and am downloading Modern Times, with high hopes, right now. I am looking forward to my attendance at the Madison show.

It's not like I haven't listened to new Bob Dylan like...out of principle or something. It's not a snobbish thing. I just haven't had the urge to listen to anything he's put out in the last 25 or so years recently. And I totally dig new Tom Waits. Is it wrong to like new Tom Waits almost more than old Bob Dylan?

i don't know. i really like tom waits too. its grown on me. but i find some people are passing on some really great stuff from dylan out of principal. i did it too. i'm sure i am coming off mroe antagonistic than i really am. bob's past three albums have been good. i see similarities in some ways between waits & dylan currently. its not entirely musical, either. there are similarities in their gentle ballads, i guess. i just see them as forefathers to an era in music that is dying. and dylan's game is close to as good as waits right now.

i think dylan still has TONS to offer. this is mere evidence of it. he's stopped attempting to sound "modern" and playing the minimalistic songs that suit him the best. johnny cash's resurgence had a lot to do with him simply sitting down with a guitar and singing about life. its a lot like hearing your grandfather tell you stories from 50 years ago. hearing all of the wisdom he's accumulated through the years. when bob dylan, and even to a lesser extent, tom waits, dies we won't have these artifacts. we'll be left with their music from 25 years ago, but nothing new to enlighten the masses. bob squandered over 10 years attempting to be something he was not. he tried keeping up with the times. its so refreshing to hear what he's doing now. its as exciting as hearing blonde on blonde for the first time. not that i'm saying its as good, but that i'd heard so much about the album that i was thrilled to finally listen to it. now, i'm excited to hear where bob is musically considering he has seemingly shed whatever core audience he tried clinging onto in the 80's.

I'm seeing him on Sunday night on his minor league ballpark tour with Jimmie Vaughan and Junior Brown as openers.

 

 

I'm also planning on buying tickets to see him November 9th in Portland. He's huge in Portland for some reason, he's sold out the Civic Center the last two times he played there in '99 and '01. And with The Raconteuers as an opening act, I'm sure it'll sell out within the first couple of days.

So, I've decided to acquaint myself with newer Bob Dylan. I d/led "Time Outta Mind", which I hadn't heard in about 3 years, and I really enjoyed it. I also got the new one, which I really dug. Right now I'm downloading "Love and Theft". Of those two new Dylan records that I've heard today, I still like new Tom Waits more, but I'm glad to be listening to new Dylan, as it's quite good give or take.

Hmm tickets for his show in Portland, Maine are only $45 a pop. Not too bad- especially considering the Raconteurs are opening.

I like it. Scarlett always does good at playing retro chicks. The old timey film effect complemented the song pretty well.
