"You start out stealing songs, then your robbin liqour stores, and selling crack and running over kids with your cars?"

My inner child is laughing hysterically. You have to respect a man who can cover so many different genres of music with accuracy. And typcially Al asks permission before using a direct parody.

A song about illegal downloading? It's not 2000, Weird Al.

A "We Are the World" parody? It's not 1985, Weird Al.

Yeah. I finally listened to this and...yeah. Smiles were not cracked, nothing was relevant. My initial assessment still stands. Sorry guys. I guess I just hate life.

Seriously... are you upset about Weird Al Yankovic? He's a guy who makes money off mocking songs and song styles. He's managed to eek out a career doing something over and over that people still buy into.

My cousin loves Weird Al, and actually goes to the concerts he puts on. Which sell out. Good for Al.

Sure it's a base form of comedy, but really, we all need a little mindless rhyming in our lives.

No one's saying there's anything wrong with humor in music, but the "golly gosh isn't Weird Al the best and greatest?!?!?!"-type comments in this thread are ridiculous.

And I just watched that video for "Don't Download This Song." The song is like something a particularly clever middle schooler would've come up with.

I would run with the "taste is subjective" line, but then I'd feel like a hypocrite given my own mild elitist streak within the metal community.

As said earlier, my greatest problem is that now I'm an old non-MTV-watching man (and have been for all this decade) and therefore I know fuck all about the songs he's reworking nowadays.

Like Slayer said, Al's original stuff can show some surprisingly good musicality (for lack of a better term). I actually prefer his Christmas songs ("The Night Santa Went Crazy" and "Christmas at Ground Zero"), "Since You've Been Gone", and "Everything You Know is Wrong" to a lot of his parody work.

To me, Al enjoys what he does and doesn't care who knows it. He takes these songs written by people who do nothing but complain about how bad their lives are, how hard they have to work, and basically take themselves WAY too seriously and turns those songs into parodies that seemingly anyone can do. However, I'd like to see you nay-sayers (A Catholic) that actually think anyone can do it, do it for as long as Al and be as successful as him. Al tweaks the collective nose of the music industry and gets away with it.

I've been done with this thread for a long time but I had to comment on the worst, worst argument you can use in any discussion, whether it's about music, sports, whatever. "If it's so bad why don't you do better?" Terrible in any context.

...Yeah, he's from Houston. Like...the really bad part of Houston, where you can go to the barber shop and get new rims for your car or like...a plasma TV.

Yeah I remember going to that part of Houston on my trip. Yeah real bad place. :D

What's funny about this is that since he always asks permission to do the parody before doing so (even though he has every right not to), so if the artist, (hopefully) knowing full well who Al is, okays the parody, they must not take themselves all that seriously... that or they don't mind the extra royalty cash, either or.

Funny enough, one of the most notable artists to consistently turn down Al's parodies is the man in Edwin's avatar.

Why? Someone makes a statement saying, "ya right. people are lambasting edwin & inc for debunking weird al as an artist? come on. "eat it" "like a surgeon" "ahmish paradise". ya, real gems. any ass can rhyme surgeon & virgin. or beat it & eat it. I'm saying that before he insults Weird Al's talent he oughta try writing one parody song and seeing how difficult it really is.

This isn't like making fun of Shaq's free throw shooting since it's impractical to recreate the conditions he has to work in. This is simply sitting at a desk and writing a truly funny song that has to fit in to someone else's frame. I don't think it's as easy he obviously does.

I like Weird Al the person more than his music, I suppose. Everyone loved Al when they were a kid, myself included.

The one thing he's done that I will find funny until the day I die is the movie UHF.

Oh, and "Dare to be Stupid" is good.

I just heard Weird Al's parody of Chamillionaire's "Ridin" last week and thought it was funny as hell. It's even funnier watching the music video to it. Now I'm not familiar with too much of Weird Al's work(I have heard "Amish Paradise" and a few others). I was just wondering what you guys think his greatest work is if "White & Nerdy" isn't and what you thought of the song in general.

I'll have to watch this later when I get a chance.

As far as best Weird Al songs go, I would have to nominate "It's all about the Pentiums" The lyrics in it are brilliant, Al does a great job of rapping and the video is hilarious. The energy in the video is contagious as well just making it a blast to watch.
