TWiB 9/4 - 9/10

Pirates announced they aren't raising that huge $48 million payroll for next year and Dave Littlefield is still going to be the GM for next year. Now think about that the next time you complain about your playoff bound team. Of course I will competely ignore my own advice when the A's finally have a bad week and let he Angels back within in five games.

Magic Numbers

I think the Pirates have the core of a good team. They have a pretty decent pitching staff-what with Ian Snell and Mike Gonzales. Their young rotation arms look to be pretty good-especially Maholm, although he walks way too many. They also have some pretty good hitters-Jason Bay, Freddy Sanchez, Ronny Paulino. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that next season, the Pirates don't finish last in the division and win at least 70 games. I'm not good at predictions.

Hey, lookin' forward to gaining some ground on the Wildcard this week. Go 'Stros!

I was thinking the same exact thing when I saw the schedule for ESPN today. Today is a perfect day to have a triple header or at the very least a double header of Baseball games.

The Cards are going for 5 well pitched games in a row. :o To keep this great run going, we now confidently place the ball in the hands of Jason Marq-ohshit.....well, maybe he'll have one of his "hey guys, I'm going to somehow be really awesome today, then my next start give up like 12 runs" games.

Somebody please tell ESPN that Ramon effin' Ortiz is throwing a no-hitter against the Cardinals. This is painful to watch.

Edit: Mothefucker hits a homerun on top of that. Wow.

Apparantly he'd be the 3rd to homer and throw a no-hitter. Rick Wise in 1971 (he hit 2 homers) and Earl Wilson in 1961 being the other two.

And Pujols takes the shutout away.

You think he might have been a little ticked off that Ortiz did his best Joe Carter impersonation running around the bases? He just destroyed that ball.

When was the last one? Johnson's perfect game?

Yeah. May...I think 14th? of 2004 against the Braves.

I can't remember there being so many NEAR no-hitters/perfect games over a couple year span without there actually being one. It seems like every day there's someone taking a no-no into the 5th or 6th inning or longer.

Hell yeah. It's awesome. They were down 5-0 and put up a 6 spot today w/ 2 outs.

They are a success no matter what happens the rest of the year, but the playoffs...or being in contention in the last week would be outstanding.

In Philly, Roger Clemens and Cole Hamels were dueling. Clemens had given up 1 hit (to Hamels) and 1 run on two walks and two hit batsmen. Clemens came out for a PH in the 6th, Charlton Jimerson...a Sept. callup. Jimerson promptly hit a HR in his first MLB at-bat to break up the perfect game. Ryan Howard just hit a homerun off Springer to give the Phils a 2-1 lead.

Edit: Whale of a game in Philly. It was 2-1 Phils going into the 8th. Aubrey Huff went deep off of Cole Hamels to tie the game at 2-2, with each team having only 2 hits. Bruntlett just singled so the Astros have a runner at first no outs in the 8th.

So the Cubs lose a one-run game to the Bucs, even though they had many shots to tie or take the lead after the Pirates had scored all their runs by the third inning. Looks like they've produced yet another guy (Buck Coats) who can't lay down bunts and the ever-wise Dusty Baker took down Ryan Theriot for Jon Mabry, because he's a lefty or something. And has the ability to strike out on three pitches and swings.

The Pirates have one more loss than the Cubs, but they're all notched at 55 wins. C'mon, Cubbies, I know you can do this.
