migoli 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2006 I dont know if this has been brought up but is there a reason why the Wii doesnt play DVDs?
Guest Smues Report post Posted December 21, 2006 I think because it was cheaper, and they were going to possibly add DVD playback capability in the future.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted December 21, 2006 Nintendo opted not to add DVD playback. There's licensing costs involved. A smart move, because if one uses their console as a DVD player at this point, they're silly.
World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2006 So, Super Swing Golf is pretty fun. I've basically been using a one-armed quasi-golf swing, because my "real" swing was too fast for the Wii remote to track. Not a problem, I wasn't expecting it to work like that anyway. The backswing is easy, because you can hold it as long as you want to make sure you get max power. It's actually good that you can do this, since the backswing seems very hit or miss with how it's tracked. Often times there are delays and pauses with the backswing meter, which requires the previously mentioned method for the backswing. The downswing is the tough part, both in getting the right amount of speed to match the power you selected on the backswing, and to hit the ball straight. That's the main part of the swing mechanic that is fun to try and get right. I'm not a big fan of the spin system, where you pretty much pick the spin you want to put on the ball before the shot is played. You can manually make the ball curve left or right during the swing, but you can't affect backspin and vertical trajectory without setting it before the shot. Realistically, that's not really something a golf game can implement, so it's not a huge deal. The swing mechanic isn't true to real golf, although you can make a "real" golf swing if you keep it to a slow tempo. Even doing that though, the game really didn't accurately measure the swing I was taking. A 3/4 swing ended up being half power, a half swing ended up going almost nowhere. I also would have preferred a system where you just swing, rather than swinging back, pressing a button, then swinging forward. But it's still a fun, new way to play a golf game, definitely much better than other console golf games, but I think I prefer the mouse controls in the Tiger Woods PC games myself. Japan's getting a Wii 2.0 as it were, with DVD playback. No confirmed word that it will reach the states.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2006 I called two Walmarts, they said they had about six Wiis in stock, I took off to go get one and before I even got there they were sold out. That's it, I give up on actually trying to get a Wii. I'm pissed and frustrated over it, and it's not worth the headache anymore. If I just happen to be in a store and I see one, I'll buy it, but I'm not going to go out of my way to try to find one anymore. Ok, so I lied, I've been trying to get one ever since I posted that above message, and I finally got one today at Walmart. I had to stand in front of the video game display case for four hours, but by God I finally got one.

That can't be real. Pretending it is, if it was Sierra and Al Lowe I'd pre-order it right now. But the Vivendi Leisure Suit Larry was pretty terrible. What I'd like is a collection of the original Larry games (At least 1,5,6, and 7. 2 and 3 I dunno because of the lack of point and click) ported to the Wii, and maybe King's Quest and Space Quest too. The Wii pointer would be perfect for playing old point and click games like that.

I should have look at the other "tech news" stories. Too bad though, that would be pretty hilarious to see.

However, "the Wiimote will be placed into a strap-on harness for a whole new angle on the game." is pretty funny. And man, I'd kill for a collection of old Sierra Quest games, I don't even think you can get a collection for PC that will run on a modern OS. So Nintendo's putting out some of the big guns for the Christmas VC releases. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6163549.html?...estnews;title;2 I'm so there for Toejam & Earl and Castlevania. But weren't there better versions of Street Fighter II available for SNES?
Guest Smues Report post Posted December 21, 2006 And man, I'd kill for a collection of old Sierra Quest games, I don't even think you can get a collection for PC that will run on a modern OS. In September they released King's Quest, Space Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry collections for $20 each that can run on Windows XP (they use Dos Box). I picked up all three and they're great, except that the Larry collection is just "Leisure Suit Larry's Greatest Hits and Misses" or whatever it was called, minus all the bonus stuff like Softporn,The Laffer Utilities, and the original non point and click Larry 1, but most important, No larry 7, and the lameass non-talking version of Larry 6. Smues - Still fucking pissed about the non-talking Larry 6 being on the collection 3 months after he bought it.

(although a cursory Google search would have easily turned it up. It did turn up a good article about the 20th anniversary of Space Quest). I need to buy those now. You'd pretty much have to be an idiot or into nostalgia to a fault to get SF2; way too slow and crappy. Good news on Super Castlevania IV, though.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2006 Have any of you tried out the Opera Browser yet? There are people at GAF already using it, but I think it's just in the UK and Japan right now. They say that it works fine, for what it is, but it should improve when the full version is released. I love that YouTube and sites like that are working just fine on it. Check out this video of it in use: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V83gaTLPICI&eurl=

Big McLargeHuge 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2006 Got my Wii Component cables from Nintendo. I'll be renting Call of Duty 3 again to see if the cables can improve upon the horrible visuals. And I really dig the gameplay. I'm switching the Wii and Xbox cables back and forth because my tv's only got two component inputs (my Xbox 360 is permanently occupying the other) because I can't enjoy MVP Baseball on the Xbox in standard definition. It's hideous and unplayable. Nintendo actually sent me 2 of them. I was thinking of selling one on Ebay, but there's a huge abundance of them on there as it is. Eclipse 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2006 The Wii Opera Browser looks good so far. I think once the Pacific Time Zone hits 12AM, it will finally reach the U.S, since by then most of the U.S is already past 12AM already.

UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2006 Could someone kindly explain to me what I will need to browse the internet on my TV using the Wii from say, my bed. I have the Wii, a big ask HD TV, and my house has both a wireless internet connection and ethernet cable connection. What else do I need to have? And what are the steps for setting it up? treble 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2006 Wireless. In the settings, it'll set you up pretty quickly. Then you'll have to download the browser from the Shop channel. Does anyone know how much the finished browser will cost?
