This Week in College Football 9/21 - 9/23

You know who's a bit of a mystery to me? Georgia. And they'll probably still be a mystery until at least October 7, when they host Tennessee. So far they've annihilated a I-AA team and shut out South Carolina and UAB, and next up they host Colorado and Ole Miss. Matthew Stafford seems to be doing all right in the "young guy who manages the game with an occasional flash of brilliance," and the defense obviously seems decent. Georgia always surprises me with excellent play to the point that I now expect them to win tough games (like last year's SEC championship) but I don't really have a feel for this squad yet. They'll be no worse than 7-1 going into the Cocktail Party, so they're kind of contenders by default.

It looks like OU will be 3-0 and Oregon will be 2-1 according to the writers and polls if the movement gets enough steam.

And Leena do you mean congrats to the officials? Because you know Oregon's own conference admitted OU should've won the game. What are we giving congratulations to Oregon for? Being given the ball when they shouldn't have had it? Being given 15 extra yards on a pass interference calls when they shouldn't have?

And this isn't the mad rambling of fans. The Pac 10 even says those calls were wrong and Oregon shouldn't have had the ball. Which means OU would've kneeled and won the game. That simple.

After the bad call yeah Oregon beat OU. But it should've never come to that. So they didn't actually win the game.

Hell, they've been a mystery to me for about five years now... they always seem to have been touted as the next big team, on the cusp of national title contention, but they've yet to fulfill

Richt has won 10 games a year for the past four years. Probably'll do it again. They just do it so quietly. Georgia under Richt has seemed extremely opportunistic--blowing a game at some point, but sneaking in and taking the SEC East anyway. Good on them.

i thought a moderator told dama to shut up about it?

New things keep getting said by different people.

Plus Leena was trolling me with her comment at the top of the page.

Shut.Up.

N-O.

If people keep saying new things about it then I'm going to have to bring it up. What they said on PTI today needed to be mentioned.

Plus Leena trolled me. So I was obviously going to respond to that.

This is an important stretch for ASU. I'm interested to see if they're finally real this year. If they can beat Cal and Oregon, I think they're a lock for #2 in the Pac-10. Then they'll lose handily in the Colosseum, but oh well. I just don't want to see them in the Insight Bowl. I want to go to that game this year.

I'm right about the whole OU/Oregon thing. Everyone else in the country aside from Oregon fans agree. I shouldn't be trolled and flamed for being right. My team was screwed. Of course I'm going to be loud about it.

And Lushus yes the screwing was last week but all the proceeding action was this week.

should be once defeated Oregon,

Edited for accuracy.

And it's funny that Leena gets a free pass trolling me. It's obvious that's what she was doing even saying Oregon was undefeated in that sentence.

But no it's always Dama's fault in this forum. Everyone else is allowed to come down on him, call him names, flame, and troll him all they want. But the moment he says "Hey that's not right. Shut up." Then it's ALL his fault and we gotta warn him!

I-AA games:

Cal Poly at San Jose St. - Cal Poly was in the playoffs last year, I believe. And SJSU is one of the worst 1-A teams. Even though they beat Stanford. :( Upset alert.

North Dakota St. at Ball St. - NDSU probably has no chance, but I'm a big fan of the Dakota schools.

No.

You brought up the topic again on the first page after everyone else had started talking about other things.

And after I had closed the old thread due to your incessant whining.

And after I told you in THIS thread the let it go.

You're not being trolled and flamed "because you're right", you're being trolled and flamed because you won't shut the fuck up. It's clear that no one but you wants to push the issue, so once again, shut the fuck up. This is your last warning, if you bring it up again, you can take a vacation.

I can't stand Oklahoma. My most hated college team along with USC and Ohio State. But that's another story. Even though I'm a Michigan fan, I love the way Drew Stanton plays and this is his best chance to show the Heisman voters something. I think the Spartans are gonna win this game, something like 38-31.

I certainly hope MSU wins. Most of us probably do. :)

And I'd like to see Stanton consistently play to his potential. And not see MSU fold like they do every year.

He does play to his potential. His bad games are the ones where no one on State is doing anything and he has to become a one man show and he starts to force some shit. I think he is one of the three best pro style qb's in the nation. I hope Sparty takes an undefeated record into the Michigan game, just because no matter what our record is, State has found a way to lose to us three straight seasons.

Sorry to interrupt, but just one more thing.

I don't want to see ANY mention of Dama in anyone's posts, unless you're engaging in actual intelligent discussion with him. Any posts perceived as baiting will be deleted. This shit has got to stop.

I was waiting for that. Good deal. Now everyone can move on.

Most of the hype leading up to the Oregon/Oklahoma game was about how Oregon will have the opportunity to make an impression on the national stage and draw attention to the Pac-10 that exists outside of USC. Even if Oregon had blown Oklahoma out by 28 I don't think it would have helped that much. The Pac-10's bowl affiliations are dreck. The Pac-10's two best bowl spots are The Rose Bowl and the Holiday Bowl. Theres nothing wrong with The Rose Bowl, but the Holiday Bowl? Pac-10 #2 vs. Big-12 #4? Last year's Oregon team is a good example. They went 10-1, with their only loss being to a supernaturally good USC team, and they ended up playing an Oklahoma team that was off the radar. I'm excited about Cal - ASU this weekend, but as good as the teams are, one of 'em is probably going to end up playing some garbage Big-12 North team in the postseason.

I think the Pac 10 has a partial tie-in to the Gator Bowl, or I could be mistaking them with the Big XII. One of them has an option for one trip out of every three or four years, supplanting the Big East team.

I'm fairly sure it's just the Big XII as an option for the Gator and Sun Bowl now.

Yeah, the Pac 10 gets shafted in the bowls. But, the Holiday Bowl only isn't a New Years' Day bowl because they can't start at the game at 10am. But, after that is even worse. #3 gets the Sun Bowl. #4, the lame Las Vegas Bowl.

They have the bad bowl spots because people have the perception that the conference is bad. The talent is great. The coaching is not so great.

There are so many good players that it's hard to keep them spread around during recruiting, and USC takes it all. Almost everyone on that team was all-state or close to it in highschool.

There's nothing wrong with the Holiday Bowl. It's actually against Big XII #3 not 4. #1 goes to the Fiesta if it's available and they aren't in the national title game and Big XII #2 goes to the Cotton Bowl to play SEC #3.

So see not every bowl is going to match up the #1 vs. #1 and #2 vs. #2. There's just too many bowls and too many teams to do that.

But a New Year's bowl for the #2 team would be nice but King is right about the perception. I don't want to see East Coast Bias because I think there's a bias for both coasts and the state of Texas but yeah.....the conference is usually perceived as weak fairly or unfairly. It is a one team show usually though. But most conferences aside from the SEC end up being 1 or 2 team shows.

And about last year's Oregon team. They proved they deserve the Holiday Bowl when that off the radar OU team outplayed and beat them. Just like Cal the year before. If you're going to bitch you deserved a better bowl then you should win the bowl you get put in against "lesser" competition.

Auburn did it. They didn't complain about being disappointed and upset they weren't playing for the national title. They just went out and proved why they should've played for it.

I agree with most of what you said, Dama, but when it comes to big programs, I think there's a huge difference in motivation level between playing in a BCS bowl where everyone in the country is watching you (like Auburn) and playing in a second-tier bowl that's not even on New Year's Day (like Oregon and Cal did). Not that that's an excuse for the Pac-10 teams losing, but the disappointment factor has to be a lot less in the first case.

I think location and traveling people to the bowls is the bigger problem. Most bowls are in Florida, or the Southeast. And when there is attempts at bowls on the west coast, like the Emerald, Seattle, Las Vegas, etc... there's tons of empty seats.
