This Week in College Football 9/26 - 9/30

USC had the scare on the road against a mediocre team that every good team has. The refs kept that game closer than it should have been, but it doesn't matter. This team is injury ravaged right now. It's hard to play in Wazoo as is, it doesn't help when the refs call pass interference on every deep ball.

If this happens at Oregon State, yes, then it's a concern. That place is the REAL shitter of the Pac 10.

Got a new Top 25. No blog, so I'm posting it here.

(Previous week's rank in parenthesis)

1. Ohio State 5-0 (1)

2. USC 4-0 (2)

3. Michigan 5-0 (4)

4. Florida 5-0 (3)

5. Auburn 5-0 (5)

6. LSU 4-1 (6)

7. Louisville 4-0 (7)

8. West Virginia 4-0 (8)

9. Texas 4-1 (9)

10. Tennessee 4-1 (10)

11. Notre Dame 4-1 (11)

12. Oregon 4-0 (13)

13. California 4-1 (12)

14. Boise State 5-0 (20)

15. Georgia Tech 4-1 (22)

16. Clemson 4-1 (15)

17. Oklahoma 3-1 (16)

18. Georgia 5-0 (17)

19. Florida State 3-1 (21)

20. Nebraska 4-1 (18)

21. Missouri 5-0 (24)

22. Texas Tech 4-1 (NR)

23. Penn State 3-2 (NR)

24. Miami 2-2 (NR)

25. Washington 4-1 (NR)

Close (in order): Iowa, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Washington State, Air Force, Houston, Rutgers

A couple quick notes here: I had Florida and Michigan in pretty much a dead heat the last couple weeks, so the fact that Alabama had a legit shot to beat Florida, even though the Gators ended up winning by two scores, and the fact that the ND win is legitimized due to GT being for real are enough to move Michigan up to #3. It's still very close however, and a win over LSU would very likely move Florida back up to #3, and possibly even #2.

Also, USC doesn't drop because they won by a TD on the road without their top receiver the same week Florida and Michigan won by 2 TDs on the road and Auburn won by 1 TD on the road. I just don't think it's right to punish them for the injury. Maybe if it was a long term thing, but if Jarrett's not back next week, he'll certainly be there before they hit the heart of the schedule.

I was at The Big House last year when Minny took the jug so it's good to see Michigan get it back. Mario Manningham is no joke.

New Hampshire's Ricky Santos went nuts against #17 Delaware.

20-31 for 281 yards and 3 TD. 13 carries for 110 yards and 2 TD.

That's 391 total yards and 5 TD on 44 touches (8.87 YPT)

I can't put Miami back in the rankings yet. This early in the season, no two-loss team deserves a spot. The Houston win is better than most will think, but it was still unimpressive enough to keep a lot of big questions on the table.

Even though Boise's 5-0, I'd flip them with Clemson, just because both Clemson and Georgia Tech's ass-whooping performances have come against more impressive competition. Boise, however, looks as close to legitimate a non-BCS team as we're going to get and I'll be happy to see them get a shot against a top-10 team once the year ends. They do belong ahead of Georgia right now, because although the defense is fantastic, the freshman quarterbacks are causing trouble and the bottom's going to drop out sooner rather than later. I think Clemson and GT are dead even as the best teams in the ACC right now, so their ordering doesn't matter that much.

Checking out Carnival's, I don't see how you can justify having Texas and LSU at 3 and 4, seeing how all the best unbeaten teams have faced good competition and beaten that competition well by this point. LSU and Texas have whooped some ass, but have yet to notch the big win. Talent-wise it's close to a push, so you've got to go with the wins.

Boston College is the only team missing that leaps out to me. They beat Clemson, which will only look better as the year goes on. BYU is no weak team either.

How the fuck is Michigan STILL # 6 in the country? At this rate they'll beat OSU, go undefeated, and miss the BCS Championship game behind the SEC champ, USC and either West Va or a 1 loss OSU team.

I'm not sure if anyone has heard this epic rant by a Michigan State radio host, but it is very funny and well worth a listen. A little late, but I only heard it today.

I posted it in last week's thread. :P

I'm waiting to hear what he said about the Illinois loss...

Whoever's voting WVU #1 needs to lose their votes. UF's only 2 points behind WVU, so a win against LSU next week will take them at least to #4. I believe Michigan's gaining ground too.

Yeah. Voting WVU ahead of Michigan is rather weak. I hate how voters will stick to whoever was ranked higher in the preseason.

Oh, and completely inexplicably, the Coaches' poll has VT ahead of Georgia Tech. It really should all just be decided by robots.

Yeah, I couldn't believe that. It's not like it was a late night game or something. It happened in the middle of the afternoon, and Georgia Tech won by 11 on the road. I'm really not understanding that one at all.

Not that it's particularly relevant to anything, but if the season ended today, I'd give the Heisman to Garrett Wolfe. That guy's just been having an incredible year. His 353 yards yesterday put him on pace to get over 2800 this season, and he's averaging 9.3 ypc. It's not like he can only do it against weak competition either, he had close to 300 all-purpose yards against Ohio State.

I really think he's the best player in the country right now, and it's a shame that he doesn't have a chance to win because of the team he plays for.

I concur about Garrett Wolfe. He's an absolute stud. Hopefully, he can put up a strong performance in Iowa. NIU isn't going to win the MAC with their hideous defense, so it's likely his only chance left to impress. So he can at least get to New York.

Hahahahaha. MSU. If John L. Smith isn't fired within the next week, I'm shocked.

Believe me, most of hte people that I have talked to have said the same thing. He was actually quoted as saying that he couldn't get the team to practice hard the week leading up to the game! That's simply unacceptable.

That's just sad. What does Smith think his job is then.

We really need crazy MSU radio guy's thoughts on this.

That dude was hilarious, I pretty much agreed with him too.

But yeah, what do you think Lloyd Carr or Mike Bellotti or Charlie Weis would do to their players if they were not practicing hard?

In fact here is the exact quote from the Lansing State Journal's website:

"All week. That's the way we practiced, what you saw," Smith said Saturday after his team's 23-20 loss to the lowly Fighting Illini at Spartan Stadium. "We can't get them to go. And apparently I don't have the answer. We can't get them to go hard in practice, so we've got to continue to look for the answer."

That was a pretty great interview. I caught it on SportscenterU this morning. He was acting it all out, pointing both index fingers at himself to show that it was his fault, and then at the end, he slapped himself in the face really hard for god knows what reason.
