The OAO 2006 US Elections Thread

Recommended Posts

If only we knew where the votes had yet to be reported in Tennessee and Missouri.

Well I live in KC............I just heard that basically nothing has been counted for KC or St Louis yet......that points to McCaskill.

When was Fox News formed? 1996 or so? Wouldn't this be the first time they've had to report on "one party" controlling at least one house? Whee, fun.

CNN WHY DO YOU KNOW WHERE VOTES ARE IN MARYLAND BUT NOT THE OTHER PLACES

These Senate races are killing me.

One thing is for sure, now that the Dems have the house, they better well have a strategy to get something done in the next two years, because if the country is not at least headed in the direction of being somewhat turned around, then the Republicans will just pull the "See you all voted for the Dems in the house and look what they did...NOTHING" card. I almost wish that this could have been a Presidential election year instead because I think it would have been far easier for a Democrat to get elected President right now, then it will be in 2008.

I am just worried that the democratic party is so full of people that don't even agree on issues right now that it could be a big clusterfuck for the next two years. Lets face it, I don't care if they are secular progressives or moderate dems that got voted into the house tonight, the fact is this election was more like a national bitch-slap to the republicans regarding the war in iraq/the economy, and corruption, so I better not see half the democrats that got elected, cave in on voting or voting against bills having to do with the war and/or tax cuts etc etc etc over the next two years. Now that they have the house, they better be DONE with acting afraid of being called "light on terrorists" and all that other bullshit that they claim they couldn't do anything about because they were in the minority in the government. The Democrats need to get their act together and decide how they plan to act strategically for the next two years to set up what is going to be another crazy presidential race.

Yeah, that's great. Got any liberal editorials to derail the thread with this time?

Sure...this one's for you....not really an editorial just a comment and pic from a blog

Chyron Of The Day

An e-mailer sends along this screen grab from around 2pm, with the caption: "It appears that they can't even allow themselves to say the Dems are leading..."

FOX News started in 1996..Republicans took ever everything in 1994..so..

and Maryland is slow..polls have been closed since 8..it should be more done than 50% by now..

There was "one party" controlling the Senate during Bush's first term after Jeffords quit the Republican Party.

Dems controlled the Senate until 2002.

Wait...the democrats want 2 years of nothing??

THAT'S THEIR ANSWER!

Jesus Christ, tell me you are NOT serious! Two years of just sitting around, twiddling their thumbs only in an effort to stop Bush like he's the Great Satan is the answer for the US??

And what happens if they BLOW another Presidental Election? What if Hillary is the nominee? I'd rather they actually work with him for two years as best they can instead of treating the country like it's their own personal game of Stratego.

Sometimes standing still is better than going backwards. A good deal of Bush's worst ideas are bills that are due for reauthorization. Stopping the bleeding is the first step, and given that the legislative branch is only 1 of 3 branches, that's pretty much what we're forced to settle for. Checks and balances are the comfortable medium our system was designed to encourage. All you have to do to see what happens when a Congress excedes their mandate and starts trying to govern is the 1996 and 1998 elections.

Of course given that Allen is the one who stands to gain from a recount it will be the proper thing to do, unlike 2000 when recounts were wholly unacceptable.

I suddenly wish it was all about John Kerry and his big mystery plan. Whatever it was, it had to be a great plan for him to keep it secret all this time. Maybe John can finally tell us the plan now that its obvious neither party has one.

Even if his plan involves clowns and nazi gold, it sounds like a better idea than, "let's just hang out right here for awhile and wait til we may or may not win the election in two more years."

And apparently a few of the races that were called were called quite a bit too early. Big stunner there.

So the question is will the media ever learn to stop trying to call races ahead of schedule?

This is the fourth straight election they have called results early only to go, "oops".

Of course not. I thought you Republicans would know that by now.

Guest Felonies!

Tom Brokaw had some great points on why the Republicans got what they deserved. Still, though. Democrats are the worst.

I'm a Republican? Really? Wow, I never knew that about myself. I need to talk to me more cause I could have sworn I refused to join a party because I wanted to make a educated choice on issues and not letters. I never knew I signed myself up to be a Republican. Dammit, I guess I need to start yelling how great Bush is and sing God Bless America.

Czech always talks about how much he hates Dems but he never talks about his opinions on issues, except I know he's said that he's against gay marriage and made some comment once about how "Americans don't want the kind of families Democrats want". Thus I am going to assume that Czech is some kind of Christian fundamentalist who (rightly) feels that homosexuality is the number one issue facing America today.

i'm not so super optimstic about the democrats myself. I don't expect anything brilliant from them. however, i've always been of the opinion that if people are incompetant fuck-ups again and again like the R leadership has shown, the first priority is to get rid of them. i've never heard of a job where someone goes "well you may be incompetant and you may have f-ed up our company again and again, but we're not exactly sure about what you're replacement is gonna be like, so why don't you stay here and keep f-ing up!"

of course the REAL solution is to have a system that isn't dependant on only two parties, the way its set up, if one side just keeps f-ing up, the only way to hold them accountable is to prop up the other side.

hopefully by the time the Dems start f-ing up, this current crop of incompetant Republicans has been shunted aside for new leaders, and we can repeat this whole thing 8 or 10 years from now.
