The OAO 2006 US Elections Thread

Recommended Posts

Anyone else think these "Problems at the Poll" stories are being a little overblown? I mean, it's like "Oh no, a voting machine broke down in Bumblefoot, Arkansas". They just can't wait to start with the "voting irregularities" stories, I guess.

Why is it so hard to have functional machines? Its not like Election Day just gets sprung on people. Is it just a crapshoot whether the machines will work?

I voted for the Green Party candidate, Pat LaMarche for Governor. Democrat, Jean Hay Bright for Senate over Olympia Snowe and Indpendent, Dexter Kamilwecz for Congress over Tom Allen (Democrat incumbant) and Darlene Curley (Republican).

None of them will probably win but damn it, King Kamala votes his hopes, not his fears!

Polls were relatively packed considering I went at 3 in the afternoon, there was a good 25-30 people voting.

And let me say, I am damn glad that Maine still uses paper ballots. Won't see any voting irregularities in the Pine Tree State. Even if there were, I doubt the news networks would care. *sobs*

Why do we need hi-tech machines anyway? My ballot was just connecting a broken black line that pointed to the choice I wanted to make. You'd have to be truly stupid to fuck it up, so why make it any more difficult that it should be?

Everyone should just go with optical-scan or whatever you call the fill-in-the-bubble sheets, but those are harder to rig. Trust me. I tried to get the automatic 100 from the Scantron machine in high school with no luck.

We even have a voting machine here in Podunk. I chose to use the paper ballot. Not too dificult.

My pen-name will be getting at least one (itd be really weird if theres more) for Governor of Wisco.

You know what the best part of this election day is?

Peter Jennings is dead, so I don't have to watch him on TV tonight.

Oh yeah. I went there.

Well I think the main thing is that in 2000, and even in 2004, most of the problems at polling places weren't even covered by the media until AFTER the elections were actually over, and then it gave an oppurtunity for people to write it off as bullshit. If you take the approach to COVER IT WHILE IT IS HAPPENING, it is harder to convince people it really isn't happening.

I got a choice of the old machine or the new fancy machine and I took the old one.

Also, they had to call my old polling place and make sure I was legit because I moved. And I had to fill out some forms & sign in the supplementary place.

I hope my votes counted. Voted R for the first time for magistrate.

I actually probably voted for more Republicans this time than Democrats, for the first time ever. It's not that I liked a lot of the Republicans, I'm just sick of certain Dems that have been serving.

Who's your candidate, McCaskill?

Candidate for what?

Feinstein for the Senate....but that is a pretty safe seat.

I was asking Tyler what candidate he had worked for.

In my district we have Don Sherwood, incumbent Republican, who two years ago was accused of choking his mistress in his Washington apartment. So he's being opposed in the election for the first time since 2000. If his opponent, Chris Carney, wins, it'll be the first time a Dem has held that office in over 40 years.

I love how Nevada has the option "None of these candiates" on the ballot. That really needs to be put in place in most states.

I also love the ABCNEWS coverage where a man leading by 1000 votes with 13% reporting is being named the winner. Way to jump the gun ABC online.

Yay, Blackwell loses OH Gov.

Probably the most obvious decision of the day. Strickland happens to be close friends with a distant uncle and I remember Strickland when I was 14 at a family reunion.

i'm gonna be really irritated if the Dems can't win one of the 2 branches, and it stays an all republican government. sometimes theyr'e just bad at politics. And with Republicans having control of all 3 branches, and f-ing everything up the past few years, I think we desperately need some opposition of any kind. f'ing pussies those democrats. Lets see what kind of president Bush really is, when put into the position that guys like Reagan and Clinton were, where they had to actually negotiate a little with the other side instead of running right or left.

How does that work anyway.

There's a few they have with 0% reporting, someone with like a 1000 votes, and they declare them the winner just because they were favored to?
