2006-07 MLB Offseason Thread

Recommended Posts

Well, he was a Chicago White Sox (ugh!) for several years...

Edit: The 'Stros also officially signed Woody Williams today to a 2-yr contract with a third year option. The contract is worth $12.5 million, but, with the option, could be worth $19 million. $6 million a year for Woody isn't bad, I don't think. If Clemens and Pettitte come back, the 'Stros rotation is gonna be killer, yo.

Edit #2: ...I don't think it's a good sign that at the Carlos Lee press conference, when he put the jersey on, it was too small and he was unable to button it up...

Which number will be higher Lee's HR total for 2007, or the amount of weight he gains by Opening Day '08?

Shit, he can weight 900 pounds for all I care. All I know is that he's a pull hitter with homerun power and a short porch in left field. He's gonna go absolutely nuts at MMP.

Toronto is coming close to sign Barajas for a two year deal for six million dollars.

Greg Zaun turned down the exact same offer from the Jays.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is saying Randy Wolf is probably going to sign w/ the Dodgers. The Phillies are offering more guaranteed money, but they're saying Wolf might take the lower offer (I think it is 1 year + an option) to play closer to home (Wolf is from LA).

The deadline for making a bid on Japanese LHP Kei Igawa (http://www.japanesebaseball.com/players/pl...p?PlayerID=1048) is 5 PM, or about fifteen minutes from now. Several teams, including the Mets, have reportedly shown interest. He clearly has talent, but appraisals of his ability to make the jump to MLB are mixed at best. Some have said that Igawa is as good as Matsuzaka at half the price, while others believe that he's on a significant downward trend and not worth the risk.

-The Phillies sign Adam Eaton to a three-year, $24 million deal with a fourth year mutual option. Eaton seems like a guy who people think is better than he really is. He's never really translated his talent into success and has injury concerns. Could be a decent pickup if he can put it together.

-Buster Olney thinks that the Red Sox will deal Manny Ramirez by this weekend if they get the Drew deal finalized. I'm still not buying it. He's been on the verge of being traded for two plus years now but there isn't one team that I can think of who matches up well in terms of movable pieces.

The dumbest thing for the Red Sox to do is trade Manny. He gives Ortiz a ton of protection and Manny is by far the biggest Yankee Killer in baseball right now.

It all depends on what sort of package they get back for Manny. Of course you can't trade him just to trade him, but if one of the lesser GM's decides to throw a great package of prospects or an impact bat at you, then it's a gamble you might want to take.

I heard a rumor of Manny to the Dodgers. Where would Manny even prefer to play anyways?

Trade Brad Lidge and Willy Taveras to the Sox for Manny. Stick Manny in LF (smaller LF=less chance for defensive errors), stick Carlos Lee in RF, stick Jason Lane in CF. No...that sucks...Trade Manny to the Angels for Santana and various other prospects.

Then we all watch as David Ortiz is walked 680 times because he has no protection. Taveras is a nice leadoff hitter, which the Red Sox don't need. Lidge is a headcase with limited trade value.

Geez...one bad season and the guy's a headcase. If he's bonkers in '07, I'll agree, but I'm not gonna jump on the "Lidge is a Headcase" train just because the guy had a bad year.

If he gets traded, the Dodgers will get him. Guaranteed.

I'd say that Broxton is the only one of those that are "off limits". Penny's rumored to be on the move, just to say so.

Loney and Kemp go for Manny or Wells. Nothin' less.

The Baltimore Sun is saying that the Orioles are close to signing Chad Bradford to a three-year deal. Is this a new anti-Moneyball strategy? Find the most expensive, overvalued commodity in the market and pay out the ass for it?

Who else are the Orioles going to sign? It sounds like the Red Sox are looking to the Seibu Lions to help out with the D Mat contract.

Just heard that the Rod Barajas to Toronto deal fell apart at the eleventh hour when he switched agents and refused to take a physical. Presumably the union pressured him to walk away from the deal and go for more money. Toronto quickly signed Gregg Zaun to a two-year deal instead.

Here's my interpretation of the Manny situation. I still think he's a Red Sox next year, but if not the Dodgers are the most likely destination. I would venture to say that a deal could already be in place, and as part of the negotiations Theo has asked the Dodgers to not offer arbitration to Lugo and Drew. This would explain Buster Olney's newsbit regarding a deal happening this weekend (the arb. deadline). That way they can quickly ink them to deals and then flip Manny to LA for a package built around Loney or Laroche.
