SNL Review- finally here

Recommended Posts

Guest Shylock

This show was much easier to sit through without the fear that Horatio Sanz would show up in the next sketch. A *lot* easier. They need to find someone who does a *good* Bush and let Forte do the stuff he does best: Oddballish comedy.

Best segments: Airport Security, the Pacino bit, Cubicle Fight, the Brian Williams cameo, Poland spring water, and Fred Armisen's small bit in the Closing Time sketch.

After seeing this episode I think that if they really wanted to make a fresh start and rebuild the show, four other people should've been cut in favor of scouting three or four other, probably better, talents: Seth, Amy, Darrell and Keenan. Amy is horrendous and not funny at all. I don't dislike her ala Horatio, but I don't think she's funny at all. Seth just isn't much good as far as being on air talent, cut him from active talent and leave him in the head writer position - or ditch him in both and find someone who's got a grip of what's funny to be head writer. Darrell's been on far too long and he's not had much good material the past few years and the Bill 'n Condy bit was painful. And not because of Maya. M'eh. Hopefully next year it'll be great and hopefully Tina won't be coming back after her show fails.

Dane's monologue was really, really bad as well.

What works about Cook, is that we all know someone just like him. identical. Dane Cook really doesn't do comedy, as he basically sprouts off random drivel that every other jock frat will spew in the course of his daily routine (which is basically 1/4 of his fanbase, the rest dominated by suntanned fried college bimbos who find him hot)

What made Cook popular was that he knew that demographic well enough to exploit them and make them think he was some sort of deity for saying the same things that we all knew and throws in a few 90's pop culture references and his muscle flexing tantrums

He is right about what he says, because what he says aren't really creative thoughts but more or less common sense that really shouldn't be viewed as "funny" but that dolt college crowd eats it up because Cook is the same idiot down the hall that always makes you laugh in some manner.

He doesn't come off as a whiny loser or pissed off black man and that works for alot of people who just want dumb comedy that isn't ALL dick and fart jokes.

I don't know maybe its the fact that he does more than just stand there or sit on a stool telling his jokes.

But he's not funny! Who cares how much he runs around and flexes his muscles or whatever-the-fuck?

I would like to call it performance comedy with observational and pop culture references. Dane Cook would tell a story and act it out on stage before pausing to tell the punchline then 5 minutes later do a call back to the 1st story. Its like a comical sherbet to clense the funny bone after watching countless racists comedy acts that has been going on Comedy Central. There is only so many times I can hear "DEEEEEE DEE DEE" or watch the comedians laugh at their own jokes or get bored with catch phrases that people try to push as standup.

Seth is only going to be on WU right now, he'll be in a situation like Tina.
Well hopefully that's the case. I wish they'd just take Amy off of it and leave Seth. If the whole thing was just done by him, it'd of been slightly better off.

As much as I’m thrilled with cast purging, Maya couldn’t have been included too? I mean it’s not like her last movie was buried by the studio or anything. Oh wait….

Damn I just read about this. "Idiocracy" going straight to DVD. Not exactly a great follow up of "Office Space" for Mike Judge. Serves him right for casting Maya Rudolph in a lead role.

But combining Cook with SNL? I'm shocked a black hole didn't open and suck us all in.

The black hole came with combining Cook and Jessica Simpson with her god-awful acting... I actually fear for people who go see...

no, wait, fuck 'em

I must have been the only guy who liked Rocket Man, Harland Williams' only ever starring role. I've seen it at least 3 or 4 times and when I showed it to my friends they were all like "I don't see how you can think this is funny." And it was only in theaters for like a week when it was released in 97/98ish.

Also I enjoyed last week's SNL, for the most part, Dane Cook's monologue sucked but he's decent when he's in skits. He plays a solid straight man.

Edit: Wait, Ebert gave Rocket Man ***, even though it was one of those *** reviews where he's like "I don't know why I'm giving this movie ***, it was pretty insipid but what the hell?"

Harland Williams and Artie Lange are both awesome.

Don't hate

I loved Artie in Dirty Work...of course that movie is just solid all the way around, but still...other than that, I don't know much about the guy.

I'm the living embodiment of the talking head review cliche.

Siegel would be more "Dane COOKS up something funny!"

Dirty Work is my all time favourite movie- and yea, Artie rocks it. I also love him on Howard, he's so much better then Jackie the Jokeman. And he's funny on Norm's new CD

Well THAT comparison was inevitable.

Have you ever seen his standup on DVD? One of the best I've ever seen. Artie that is.
