WWE 24/7

Recommended Posts

Prime Time Wrestling saw Fabulous Moolah vs. Leilani Kai. Moolah's matches are just awful, awful. She didn't seem incredibly popular, so it's amazing that this charade of a 62 year old woman holding a world title could continue for so long.

The Jumping Bomb Angels, however, were the shit.

Missy vs Madusa in a bikini pose down from Beach Blast 92.

YIKES!

Methinks that BL forgets that both were still hot back in '92.

That match between Hitman and Dynamite from Prime Time was tight; I also liked that tag match with a face Islanders (?!) team. And it just illustrates how incredibly deep the tag team ranks were back then... :(

Velvet McEntyre and the Bomb Angels were great, too; I've got that show on tape, and that's probably my favprite match on the show, because of the work those ladies did. It also illustrated what was, to me, an unfortunate shift in the WWE's attitude towards women's wrestling: I mean, the only one in that match that probably could qualify as a Diva by today's standards is Sherri, but even the big slugs could at least work a match... Now they have eye candy that can't even take a clothesline correctly.

The 24/7 version of Spring Stampede is funny. Regal and Austin have their music edited and I can't figure out why. Unless he was using a different theme that I can't remember, the theme I associate WCW Regal with was used without problem on Nitro. I can't say I remember if Austin was using the Hollywood Blonds theme after the split, but if he was, 24/7 has used that theme before as well. The Fake Gary Michael Cappetta is also back; I found this odd when I heard the voice because Gary's real voice was still heard through what sounded like fake theme music for Johnny B. Badd and DDP AND he didn't bother trying to imitate Gary. I later realized that whoever was providing the voice was acting as a way to edit out Michael Buffer (I understand he has royalty issues with this sort of thing). I began wondering if they would overdub this guys voice while Buffer was on screen for the main event, but they did a fairly seamless edit that transitioned from ring entrances to the match. The theme they gave Rick Rude is one that I KNOW belongs to another wrestler but I just can't place the wrestler, company, or year. I have to give credit - if they absolutely feel the need to give generic themes to avoid royalty payments, a lot of times they make decent ones or replacement decisions, especially since a lot of 90s themes were pretty generic anyway - but not always. At any rate, it's come a long way from the days when they would edit Benoit's WWE theme into a WCW match.

For the show itself, I had only seen it once - about 5 years ago on a tape from the only place in the city that still had an extensive selection of VHS wrestling in 2002, now out of business - and I enjoyed it. Watching it again, I didn't think it was as good as I remembered (maybe because I couldn't FF through parts I didn't want to watch as I was recording it) but I man, Flair/Steamboat was good. Cactus / Payne vs Nasty Boys I have on DVD but it's still a fun brawl, "The Boss" vs Vader is good (really!), and Muta/Austin is fairly dull but picks up near the end.

I HIGHLY recommend checking out Spring Stampede 94 if you haven't already. Hands down one of the best all around PPVs I have ever seen. I put it on last night around 1 a.m. planning on letting it record while I dozed off but the dang thing kept me up until 4 in the morning and nearly made me late for class! Pillman and Regal is a gem, wish they would have gotten more time. Same goes for Muta and Austin. Heck, even Bunkhouse Buck and Dustin Rhodes have an entertaining brawl!

Also, the Legends show is a good time-waster as usual. I think this is the last episode that they taped originally so here's hoping for the next round of tapings they "forget" to invite Mike Graham. Seriously, in all five episodes the guy fails to add one relevant, interesting, or even slightly humorous comment or anecdote and most of the guys just ignore whatever pithy comment he does come up with. Let's add in Steamboat or Arn Anderson this time around. Please.

Yeah I like that Legends of Wrestling show but Mike Graham is the obvious guy to cut from the lineup. The other guys are all well known to most fans (Dusty, Hayes, Patterson) so when you see Graham you can't help but think "Who the hell is this guy?" Thus when he rants against guys like Luger and Sting it comes off like sour grapes considering he never did much outside of his dad's rinky dink FL league.

2 thumbs up for Spring Stampede. Flair and Steamboat put on a classic with an exciting finish. Wow Pillman vs. Regal surpassed my expectations. I have to go back and record that match to dvd. That match made me go out yesterday morning and drop $17.00 on the Loose Cannon dvd. Hell fucking yeah! I love Double Double E 24/7. WHOOOOOO!

Mike Graham is awesome on the Legends show if only because of how un-awesome he is. It's so funny to have Dusty and Hayes talk about big things in their career and to have Mike chime in "I also wrestled Flair in 60 minute matches", then Jim Ross just moves on to the next topic. Not sure why he put down Sting, and yeah, like cabbage said, when he says something like "Sting didn't belong in the ring with Flair" you just have to say "and you are who to say this?". He's good as the CWF host, though.

BL: I remember in November I (and many on the board) were all hyped up for DX/Hardys/Punk vs Rated RKO/Helms/Nitro/Knox and man what a let down that was. I'm kinda looking forward to re-watching it later, though.

I mean, I didn't HATE that match or anything, but it was basically a heatfest/spotfest match when it probably could have been a fun throwback to the 87 and 88 Series days.

Yeah, exactly. You had a group of guys that could have had a MATCH, but it became "let's put all the faces over in fun spots", which made it a "fun match" instead of the great tag elimination match it could have been.

I recall Booker / Batista being boring.

it wasn't BORING, per say, it was just kinda heatless...it probably should not have been the last match of the night...I actually fell asleep through Kennedy/UT and had to rewatch it!

One thing that amuses me is the constant badmouthing of Lex Luger on various shows, including of course Legends of Wrestling. Is this some sort of Vince ordered thing or do these guys genuinely hate the guy that much? I mean who the hell are Graham and Hayes to trash Luger to that degree? From 1988-92 roughly Luger was one of wrestling's biggest stars and was involved in a number of ****+ type matches. Where are all these classic matches with Hayes or Graham?

I never realized how old some of the matches shown on Prime Time (in context to the original air date of PTW) were until this episode. The reference to giving away a Rolls Royce during Bret/Dynamite places that match in 1985! I enjoyed that match as well.

I also liked the Islanders squash, despite the audience chanting boring. Tama had a great leap on that splash finisher. Bruno was funny on commentary - by funny, I mean I didn't know he was even there until Jesse mentioned him dating a female wrestler named Princess Toma which Bruno responded to with "I'm happily married". I believe that was his only contribution to the commentary, despite the Vince asked him a direct question about Hulk's chances against Andre (Bruno may have started to answer but I only heard Jesse talking).

They mentioned the next PTW episode will have a Muracco / Fuji stand up comedy routine. That should be awesome.

I couldn't stop laughing at Heenan saying Lord Alfred's uncle, "Fingers Hayes", broke into the Royal Palace. I think it was just his delivery on "Fingers Hayes".

If the spot was taken from TNT, it is great. They are so awful yet so good at what they're trying to accomplish. Also, watch for a certain uncoothe gesture from Mean Gene.

wonder why a show that aired in 87 would do that? Not that I'm complaining or anything...I mean they treat it like it just recently happened. I forgot how chubby Bret used to be.

Graham's site says they aired it in October of 85 as well. Keep in mind all of this Fuji stuff they're showing is from 1985 as well. I guess without a PPV to build to for another 7 months they just dig into the past. I believe Monsoon has been ending the last few episodes by advertising the next show as looking at some matches from the past.

ohhhh I gotcha...as much as I always liked Monsoon and Heenan's camaraderie when calling matches, I don't watch the entire PTW episodes, I do a ton of fast forwarding.

Haha, I think everyone does that. Old Prime Time episodes are maybe the only wrestling shows ever that people tuned in for just due to the announcers.

I think sometimes they look at older matches due to a lack of anything else to show that week. Besides, let's say Dynamite is hurt...showing that older Bret match at least keeps his name out there.

This month seems to be great, with Hart/Savage SNME and the '85 Hart/Billington WWF MOTYC. I need better quality versions of those matches. Wish I had the damned thing.

The Patterson/Slaughter match is still a good one but you wanna hear something funny? I saw a similar Slaughter/Hogan "Desert Boot Camp" match from 1991 at MSG and I swear I think it might even be better. One of Hogan's best matches I think, better than the WM 7 main event.

They still insist that WrestleMania VII was moved from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum because of a bomb threat. I know the WWE has told alot of lies, but to me, that's their second biggest lie, behind the Pontiac Silverdome being filled with 93,173 people for WrestleMania III.

Watching the Legends show, it was cool seeing even just a *little* bit of a commercial for WrestleMania VII at the L.A. Coliseum. I barely remember any WWF TV from 1990-1991, but from what I've seen and heard, Vince REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted WrestleMania VII to sell out the Coliseum. So much so that he started advertising WrestleMania VII AT WrestleMania VI. Now adays, the only advertising I've actually seen left from WrestleMania VII are a poster annoucning the location and a pin on eBay that has the L.A. Memorial Coliseum on it. I would love to see some old commercials for the show where they talk about it taking place from the Coliseum. I have this warped interest in watching Vince's dreams get crushed.
