Black Friday

Recommended Posts

So I'm going to be working my first Black Friday this year for Circuit City. Have to be in by 3 AM. Doors open at 4. Supposedly scheduled until 10 PM but, as the day goes on, more and more people will be sent home...so that's up in the air, I guess. This is the first time I've worked Black Friday for a retail store yet but I did work at a McDonalds on a busy avenue one year for this special day. To see a lady come storming in and knock all the food off another woman's table because she snatched up the last Bratz doll in the KB Toy Store a block away a few minutes earlier...memorable, to say the least.

I do the Black Friday routine every year, and have since '97-'98 or so. Normally I won't even bother sleeping on Thursday night, and just pull an all nighter so that I'm out waiting in line somewhere by 3:30-4am. In the early stages of the tradition, it was a good way to not only get the big gift that I'd want (with my birthday a week before Christmas, I'm lucky enough to aim for expensive things I've wanted like TV's, computers) but to get a lot of the kids in the family taken care of. Now that they're older and are more a money in a card/gift certificate types, I basically have my own agenda when I go out on Black Friday. Not sure what I'm aiming for just yet, but I'll be out there with a few friends in tow to make a day of it.

I'll be working, but I run my own business and it's not a retail store, so I'm guessing things will be pretty quiet.

My only memorable story from Black Friday is working at an electronics store a few years ago...a couple other guys had come in a half hour early to get the store ready...of course when I get there, they're in back eating McDonald's. I go out front, and as I'm clocking in, the security guard calls the store to tell me someone is waiting outside. Technically it was a couple minutes before we could even unlock the door, so an amusing argument ensued. I sold the guy a pair of speakers, after he tried to berate me for not opening on time, but I basically shrugged him off.

I'm glad I don't work retail anymore.

We're doing black friday for an HDTV that is a nice price.

Walmart's the place. I'm thinking we'll be there at ~4.

Yeah, it's definitely not a bad time to buy an HDTV right now. We already have a 48" rear pro HDTV in our living room, but I'd like to get an LCD flat panel for our bedroom. Maybe Santa will be nice to me this year. Last year I ended up getting a bunch of stuff for the house, like tools and such. Yeah, that was nice, but I told people I want fun stuff this year.

This is me and the gal basically buying up the anniversary present and xmas present in one thing. I certainly hope we get one. I might bring the gun...

Hey, it's the annual Black Friday thread.

We're waiting for Boxing Day to get our new LCD flat panel. Or possibly Super Bowl week -- prices on TVs always go down further then. My wife and I are forgoing Christmas presents to each other to buy one.

I'm sleeping in, and getting engaged. Might make the hubby buy me a Wii, too. Just to establish early dominance.

I'll be at Best Buy from 4:30 in the morning until sometime after 3 pm. It'll be a long day made even longer in that I'm a former cashier, turned media associate, who will be stuck on a register for the entire day.

I'm going to get a Matt Jones jersey in the 'hood Friday. I'm glad I work at a grocery store, it's going to be fuckin' dead.

I'll likely go to some store in faint hopes of getting a Wii, end up not getting a Wii, and be mad for the rest of the day. Meh.

I'm going to be working on a car that afternoon but I have the girl doing the black friday stuff and she'll be grabbing a new flat screen HDTV thats low priced, various DVD's that are insanely low priced and some girl stuff she needs.

I just cant stand annoying retail people crying the blues about this day. Most people who work regular jobs are forced with chaos, disorganized confusion and frustrated customers on daily basis.

I worked at Toys'R'Us on Black Friday a few years ago and still found it to be easier than any cooking job I've ever had.

During the Furbie craze my mother saw a little girl get slammed into the side of a building and have her arm broken as the doors opened to Wal*Mart. The store gave the girl a free Furbie but I don't know if legal actions were ever taken against that Wal*Mart or the people that caused her broken arm.

My mom bought a couple of those back in the day, figuring they might be worth something some day. I think they're still collecting dust. We did open one, and it was kind of fun torturing the dog with.

I'm glad I've never participated in an insane shopping mob. Sometimes violence is warranted, but not to buy a glorified stuffed animal or video game system.

Ditto. I've accepted the reality of probably not getting one, though. So my hopes won't be too dashed.

I was interested in picking up a cheap mp3 player Best Buy has as one of their door crashers but was dreading the line. Logged onto Circuit City's website, and they have the same product as an "online-only Thanksgiving day special" for only 5 bucks more, with free shipping. Needless to say, I'm not getting in line tomorrow morning.

I just drove by my local best buy and there's already a line across the complex and it's 10 PM PST

Best Buy here had a long line at 7pm PST.

I don't know how people can do that shit.

My sister and I just stood in front of a large display of 2 qt. slow cookers at Wal-Mart for about 4 hours. They were on sale for $3.88. I also got Field of Dreams on DVD for $3.44. I should've stayed asleep.
