What would be the American equivalent to French-Canadians? What's the group down there that politicians are forced to suck up to and the rest of the country sits back and wonders why?

Miami is the closest thing to a Montreal that the USA has. Noone speaks English, extraordinary amount of Europeans and various other refugees, popular tourist destination, despite it being pretty dangerous in some places.

So, you can take that for what it's worth. Noone realizes how bad Miami is until they actually go there; and I'm not talking about that thin stretch of tourist trap known as Miami Beach, I'm talking about the city proper. Practically everyone that moves there from out of state hates it and moves back, unless they're from another country or don't speak English.

On the plus side, Rick Mercer was on fire talking/ranting about it yesterday.

Basically, it's a brilliant short term move that shuts the Bloc up and fucks the Liberals up. As for the NDP... well, noone cares about the NDP.

Long term... well, chances are Harper won't be PM when whatever repercussions happen. Which would bode well for Bob Rae should he become Liberal leader and PM - he's used to getting screwed over by previous regimes.

After Smilin' Jack's comments about the troops in Afghanistan, I would never vote NDP while he's the leader.

I almost agree, but what I said re: Harper/Layton last January still applies.

The leader is indeed important, but ultimately, I'm gonna go with the party that best represents my views, which is the NDP. Yes, I know they'll never get more than 40 seats.

Hey, Harper could play "Hey, he fucked up Ontario" card. He seems to do pretty well when he runs with no platform.

Hispanics? Women? Blacks? Farmers? The military? Take your fuckin' pick.

Southerners. They also tried to become their own country, as I'm sure you recall.

I wouldn't say that there's anything close to the Quebecois in America anymore. Maybe the Injuns.

If you want to get into specifics, rather than fuck around with jokes like I do, I think Texas is our Quebec, as nobody does smaller jurisdiction > larger jurisdiction like Quebecers and Texans.

-State/provincial flags everywhere

-Separate languages from The Rest: French-Canadian, George W. Bush Folksy-Garble

-Generally reprehensible citizens/citoyens

However, a difference is that Montreal and Quebec City are vibrant and fascinating cities, whereas Dallas and Houston just seem like dumps.

It's also fashionable to say Texas = Alberta, but whatever

I don't hate this...

Don't get me wrong, this issue was reasonably under the rug for a while (and I don't honestly think Quebec would ever separate anyway), and Harper basically stirred the pot and it worked out okay for him.

But no part of me as a Canadian wants to see Quebec leave.....If this makes them happy without giving them any actual additional power, vetoes or status unavailable to other provinces, well, I don't think it's that bad.

Not yet, anyway. It is a slippery slope....It's really a matter of wait and see.

Just for fun: I had considered starting a topic about this yesterday when it was passed. I didn't think it would get much response (see my, albeit much-less controversial, mutual fund thing topic of three weeks ago).

Agreed. I have no problem with this move. As starvenger said, if it fucks the Liberals, shuts up the Bloc and their separatist voter-base (and again, who cares about the NDP?) then I'm all for it. It's nothing more than a gesture of good will, and people are acting like it's the end of the world.

Pick one its either the New York Jews (we must defend Israel) , the Miami ex-patriot Cubans (lets invade Cuba), Southern Conservatives (fear mongering everything is a sin) , Hollywood Liberals (must be the world police), the wacky Sciencetologists (its a religion really so we don't have to pay taxes but you have to pay us to be a member).

Mine was better because I didn't say "the New York Jews." You're lame. Rando lame.

That's actually pretty wrong. Montreal has plenty of English speaking people, especially downtown. In fact, there are many residents that don't speak French at all. It's also not dangerous, doesn't have as many immigrants/refugees as Toronto, and isn't nearly the biggest French city in Quebec. Go up north for that shit.

I don't know much about Miami, but from what you said they aren't really similar. However I thought it was a nice place, I mean it can't be all shitty?

Harper is pretty brilliant in doing what he did, and if Dion is elected leader of the Liberal party tonight expect the Conservatives to crush the reds come the next election.

I love the Dion/Kennedy combo because that's who I'd like to have the Liberals lead the party.

The party is still in shambles though and it won't be a while until the Liberals will be in power again.
