cbacon 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2006 Fucking socialism has officially taken over Latin America... Yeah, because Western style capitalism that was imposed was doing so much better for them. I'm sure Nicaragua can attest to that.

Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2006 I've always wondered "why do some people treat this guy like a hero?" I mean sure, he rips on Bush regularly, but so what? So do a lot of people, but they're not heroes. Hell, I hate Bush, and I'm no hero. I wonder how these faux socialist jackasses would feel if they actually went to Venezuela? If you ask me, most of the people in this country who go "Capitalism sucks! YAY SOCIALISM!" would want to go back to their old capitalist life if our country suddenly became run by socialists. To make it short, Jerk is right on this one: Socialism has done wonders for no one. But hey, go back to reading Chomsky and thinking you are always more intelligent than the "sheeple." Sorry about the rant folks, it's just something I needed to say.
Big Ol' Smitty 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2006 Chavez is a pompous ass and seems to be becoming increasingly authoritarian. HOWEVER, his opposition, at least during the early years of his presidency, were pretty horrible too (topped off by a Bush-supported coup attempt in '02) & he has at least provided a voice for & some relief for the country's vast population of very poor people. For the record, I am not a Chavez supporter by any means. Apparently crime has become a huge problem in Venezuela (I'm not sure if it was prior to Chavez) especially in Caracas. Despite Jerk's snide remark, Bacon was right that neoliberal reforms have basically been extremely detrimental to several Latin American countries. I think the center-left, more democratic Lula in Brazil is a better example of what the region needs than Chavez. I haven't read a lot about Morales in Bolivia or this new guy that just got elected in Ecuador. With the recent election of Ortega in Nicaragua, Latin America is becoming totally leftist-dominated. SuperJerk 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2006 My comment was more of a criticism of pro-socialist dogma than the individual reforms particular to this instance. Economic reform, like democracy, should probably come from within a country and not be imposed, in order for it to work.

I think that's an unfair assement to make, but like smitty said, I was referring to neo liberal reforms being far worse then any 'socialist' form of government in Latin America

If putting fear into people is someones job... doesn't that make them a terrorist? No, governments can use fear against other nations without it being terrorism. Maybe fear was a bad choice of words...I think I meant more along the lines of "respect." They need to respect the power and stature of the United States. He was mentioned on "The Daily Show" last night, and a few people cheered the Jackass, which seemed to piss Jon Stewart off. Poor guy, he's got a great show, yet it attracts such an obnoxious audience at times.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2006 You're right, they were doing so well before Chavez came into power. Saying that living under a Chavez-controlled Venezuela is better than a Bush-controlled America is just silly. lol. Ok. The country was falling apart each day, just like the rest of South America before he came into power. South America is tired of being used by the US. Fuck that. And Chavez laughs at Bush. He called him the Devil and an alcoholic too; he ain't shy about saying anything. And for the record, he has nothing against the US. He gives cheap gasoline to all the neighborhoods that need it. He just doesn't like the dickhead of a President we have and the rest of the stupid government. Respect the power and stature of the US..he'd slap you for saying that. Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2006 Yes, we should all take a guy who calls Bush "The Devil" seriously. Come on, I hate Bush, but "The Devil" is a bit ridiculous. You do know that you can't even criticize Chavez in Venezuela, because if you do, you get sent to jail. Yes, what a great man Chavez is!
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2006 That's not true. They tried a fucking coup and none of the people against him (citizens) got sent to jail. If you're following the private owned t.v medias that show all the shit they can to make Chavez look bad, then you're looking at the wrong place because those people are pissed that he's going to spread the wealth around. Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2006 Half Venezuela, for a country that was struggling like hell, socialism isn't a bad idea, and anyway, that's really not important. I'm not making horrible arguments. Venezuela was struggling using capitalism and being somewhat tied to the US. Why the hell wouldn't you try something new? Sure, Chavez is a little over the top, but he's helping a country that's needed help for a while.
Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2006 Look at it like this: The guy gets credit for "helping the poor" How? Look at the poverty rate in Venezuela. I'll give him credit for helping them out some, but he has yet to really offer them a way out of poverty. He helps them out at times, but at the same time, he prevents them from moving up. Do you know why? Because if that happened, then they wouldn't need him in office as much as they would, and would eventually not see a need to keep him in office. Face it, most of us don't like the guy. Hell, Jerk and smitty, two guys who like me, are far from conservative, aren't exactlly his biggest fans. Hell, Democrats hate the guy, and think he's a thug. In other words, he's not the great guy you think he is.
