Legal Wrestling Match Between DDP & Jay-Z Continues, Rocawear Added To Lawsuit

By Nolan Strong

Date: 12/11/2006 6:30 pm

The legal wrestling match between wrestler Diamond Dallas Page and Jay-Z continues in court, as the wrestler has added Roc-A-Wear to a trademark and copyright infringement lawsuit.

Diamond Dallas Page filed the original lawsuit in December of 2005 in Los Angeles Federal Court, claiming that Jay-Z's popular Roc-A-Fella diamond hand gesture was illegally adopted from his patented "Diamond Cutter" symbol.

Today (Dec. 11), a federal judge granted a motion to add Rocawear, Roc Apparel Group LLC, Urban Menswear LLC and Rocawear Licensing LLC to the lawsuit, which seeks an injunction to prevent Jay-Z from using the symbol, as well as an unspecified amount of monetary damages.

Page decided to add Rocawear to the existing lawsuit, after he learned Jay-Z recently used the hand gesture to market and promote the Rocawear clothing line.

"Many athletes and celebrities also flashed the Diamond Cutter sports celebration move," states the lawsuit, which was filed in Los Angeles Federal Court. "In Game 6 of the 1998 NBA finals against the Chicago Bulls, Karl Malone, the Utah Jazz star basketball player, flashed the Diamond Cutter Trademark during the game and referred to the symbol as Plaintiff's hand sign. Similarly, former professional football player and Dallas Cowboy star running back, Herschel Walker used the Diamond Cutter Trademark after a 64 yard touchdown run and also acknowledged that it was Plaintiff's signature trademark."

Page, who is shooting the movie Gallow Walker in South Africa with Wesley Snipes, says that he used the symbol to promote his DDP character while working for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as early as 1996.

The wrestler used the hand gesture just before executing his signature finishing move in the ring, the "Diamond Cutter."

Due to the popularity of the hand gesture, Page used it in other business endeavors including a pair of inspirational products including the Yoga For Regular Guys DVD series and book, and an upcoming audio book titled Own Your Life.

The lawsuit aside...I'm I the only one one who was a DDP Mark? I his whole gimmick was cool and the Diamond Cutter was the move when he started doing from all kinds of positions...I thought it was kinda cool when he was the guy who gave his all in a match and lose but you felt he always gained from it..Plus you gotta admit..that match he had with Goldberg at Halloween Havoc was suprisingly good...

I'm a big DDP mark as well. I really really enjoyed his three way feud with Chris Benoit and Raven in 98, some great great matches came out of it. He also had **** matches with Goldberg and a past his prime Savage, so I have to give props to DDP.

Regal's "Narcissist / WrestleMania IX Roman Theme Remix" theme that he used very briefly in late 2001 before it got changed to that cool "dark" music is really good, but I can see why they changed it as it's not entirely character appropriate. The later version worked better.

Technically, DDP can't do anything about it because the Diamond Cutter symbol has the fingers spread apart while Jay-Z has his fingers put together when he does it.

Just randomly browsing the last year or so of PPV results.

Only twice in history has the man who drew No. 1 gone on to win the Royal Rumble; never, however, had the man who started with him at No. 2 gone on to be victorious. In the 19th edition of the Rumble, that benchmark fell by the wayside, as No. 2 entrant Rey Mysterio went the distance to claim the main event of WrestleMania 22.

I think that Vince McMahon was #2 when he won it.

Yep. Commissioner HBK made him #2 after Vince made Austin #1 in 1999.

I remember...Vince originally had himself at #30, and there was some stip that Austin couldn't touch Vince or he'd lose his Rumble spot, so HBK made them #1 and #2 so Austin could finally get his hands on him.

I also found it funny and unsurprising that HHH entered #1 this year, and was in the final three.

Wrestling announcers need not be characters, but should absolutely have a face or heel distinction.

As such, JBL is the second best announcer in wrestling (behind JR. Stale and bad aren't neccessarily the same thing). The reasoning behind this? Face announcers can put over faces and vice versa.

How can I get behind a guy like Sylvan or Hussan when both announcers are putting him down? Jerry Lawler is the most guilty of this crime....anyone remember him getting behind long-time enemy Bret Hart in 1997?

Well, of course he did. Bret had just turned heel.

I agree...I thought DDP gave a good effort every week and looked like he cared about the product. In addition - good lord was Kimberly hot!! I saw her in a bar in Baltimore (with Page and other WCW talent) and she is even more beautiful in "real-life". I think they are getting divorced (right?) - but he gets major respect for being married to her. Whew.....

WWE really needs a modern version of Jesse Ventura to be a heel commentator. Best ever, IMO.

That said, JBL isn't bad.

I like how he brings up the past and treats it like an actual sport, referring to history and stuff that's often forgotten. He's no Ventura (or Heenan, who takes my #1 spot), but apart from the occasional playing favourites, as I described above, JBL is a very good commentator, I feel.

If it suits your fancy, she's the one with her tit popping out on 40 Year Old Virgin.

I was surprised WWE has never hired or used Kimberly (especially when DDP was with them, though maybe their marriage was on the rocks at that point).

DDP was generally pretty good, from about '97-'99 or so. His interviews got kind of lame eventually, though. You could tell he was trying to be like a cross between the Rock and Stone Cold, or something.

Am I the only one that liked Arn and Tully Blanchard better in the WWF than NWA? I always thought Tully was overlooked for Ric Flair.

You'd think they'd do it just once to prove the whole "#30 is the best number" thing. I mean, why not have some total dick heel like Edge come in at #30, and eliminate the babyface who's lasted since being #1 or #2 to win it?

If I remember correctly, Kimberly was one of the people WWE was most interested in during the purchase of WCW, but she was too set on working toward her acting career.

Since getting 24/7 in August and watching old Prime Time's, I noticed that a banner that seems to say nothing more than "Superstars of Wrestling" is blurred out. I couldn't figure out why as it does not appear to say "WWF" on it, but I thought little of it. In watching the 1989 Prime Time Christmas special, I noticed that during a 'split screen' segment, the background had an anachronistic Superstars logo from the mid 90s with the new generation era WWF logo. Curious, I checked the Wikipedia entry for "WWF Superstars" and apparently there is a copyright problem with the name "Superstars of Wrestling".

After watching Savage/Hogan at Wrestlemania V, I wish there was a Randy Savage DVD.

And also, how beautiful Miss Elizabeth really is, and its ashame that someone so beautiful died because of some fucked up asshole.

Luger didn't make Liz mix drink and drugs. I'm not a fan of Lex at all, but Liz died of her own hand, and it's not as if she's the first person to ever mix drink and drugs with fatal consequences.

I hate to bump up an old thread but I maintain this folder needs a CTDWAT. And the following comment that doesn't warrant a thread.

Anyways, is it just me or has WrestleCrap gone downhill? Or was it not all that funny to begin with and I just liked it because I was a 14 year old who had just smartened up and liked the references to obscure crappy gimmicks? I'd like to think its the former but I can't remember the last time I laughed aloud at something on there. Today's induction is particularly bad. Now I'm not saying that the WrestleMania VII instant replay is undeserving of an induction but in the article RD says and I quote "This fiasco took place at WrestleMania VII, which, by almost all calculations, was one of the worst WrestleManias in history". Huh? Sure it has some shitty stuff on there but I can't think of anybody else who thinks it's anywhere near one of the worst. It just reminded me of the thread edgehead69 made last year where he said that we all can agree WrestleMania XXIII is the worst WrestleMania ever. The point is, my fellow Smart Marks, is don't make contentious statements and try to pass them off as consensus. Or else I'll have to bump up a year old thread.

yeah when I was in college I used to read Wrestlecrap all the time in the computer labs in between classes. It was great to relive all the gimmicks that I grew up on and laugh at RD's stuff. In fact I remember the day Merle commited suicide, it was a Friday in September 2000. Shocked the hell out of me

Then RD turned into a jaded smark and started taking the site way too seriously and I stopped visiting.

I think the last time I was there was maybe 04'

When I was in 7th Grade (which would be about 2001), I would read Wrestlecrap every Friday afternoon after school. I remember going through the archives alot and reading the same inductions again and again. I was so bummed when RD took down the site, but then he brought it back in a limited form like a year later, and I remember reading it again every Friday.

I don't know what happened, but I just stopped going to the site. I can't recall a specific incident that led to it, I just stopped visiting the site. Ashamed too, because it used to be one of my favorite websites when I was 13-years-old (shit, it has been a while!). You're not the only one who says the site has gone downhill, King Kamala Classic. I've heard that from other people too.

The Death Of WCW book and the original Wrestlecrap book were really good, though.
