EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2006 Tomorrow's a big day for me kids. I finally graduate from college with a dual bacholar's degree in History and Political Science. It's been a lot of work, but at this point it's been worth it.' And no, I'm not streaking during the ceremony with "The Mackenzie Group" stenciled on my back. vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2006 Congrats, Al and Tiki. I graduated today with a BA in English Lit., magna cum laude. When the dean shook my hand and gave me my diploma, he said, "Congratulations." For some reason, I said, "Thanks. You, too..."
Guest Smues Report post Posted December 16, 2006 Schools have graduation ceremonies in the winter? No fair, my school only had it after spring quarter, so if you graduated in a different quarter no commencement for you unless you wanted to wait until the next spring quarter ended. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2006 Now get a job, hippie. Having graduated in "mid-year" as well, is your school doing any fancy graduation ceremony, or are they just kicking you out with that piece of overpriced paper otherwise known as a diploma? Darthtiki 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2006 I'm having my paper sent to me and high-tailing it to Orange County in 3 weeks.

Congrats, but I'm guessing your going to have to go to grad school before you can get a decent job. I got a BA in history and I'm going for a masters in International Studies. I'm probalbly going to get a doctorate just b/c I don't know what the fuck else to do with my life. Wish I had an interest in stuff I could make money off of. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2006 I'm planning on starting grad school in the fall. I really enjoyed upper level classes when there's 15-20 students and work is more independent; student driven and not just lecturing. Meatwad, thanks for the congratulations. kkk, while we have a full ceremony, we didn't even get a diploma. We just get a diploma cover while the school waits on our final grades. The real one gets mailed within a month.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2006 Congratulations. I think i'm heading towards the same type of major, but I still have no idea what i'm going to do afterwards. What are your plans now? Right now I just intend to work at my current job and put out feelers. I'm not thinking too much about my career, I'm just glad I don't have papers to worry about in my spare time.

RepoMan 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2006 What can you do with a history degree besides being a history teacher? Just curious... Jack squat,. I could be teaching high school know if I had gotten and education degree and I feel like I just want to get into a real job already, but I hate all the BS that comes with teaching high school. You have to teach your students just to pass state tests and god forbid if you introduce any thing contraversial. But I have to go through a lot of years of school to be able to teach college classes and for not that great of pay. I don't really care about the pay too much, but I'm sick of working through mutliple degees via crappy jobs
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2006 You can do a lot with any liberal arts degree if you think a bit outside the box and aren't hugely committed to applying that specific discipline to what you're doing. A B.A. and good research skills can get you a paralegal or legal secretary job, or a research assistant type job at a university, local or state government agency, or think tank. You can also go for any sort of entry-level position at a big company, whether it's a marketing job, a report-writing job, etc. If you get that M.A. in international affairs, you can just head to D.C. and find a really nice job with a government contractor here. And if you really want to teach, just be a community college professor first after you the finish the M.A. Easier to find than full university positions, pays about the same as you'd make immediately after finishing the Ph.D (but lacks tenure-track, obviously), and can give you a couple years to decide if you really want to e spend another 4 years in school to make academic research and publishing your life. And congrats, Al. Are you looking at grad school for the M.A. or for going all the way to Ph.D-land?
Wyld Cannon 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2006 Does anyone remember from the CM PUnk shoot where he talks about getting a job in a laboratory or something because he just faked his resume? My point is do jobs even check that you graduated from a school? Because I'm pretty sure my current company doesn't (I know the peeps in H.R.).
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted December 18, 2006 I know quite a few don't. I know at least 2 of my post-high school jobs didn't check into anything on my resume. Including one that said they'd do a "thorough background check". But, you're probably better off being honest about your education unless you're just taking a stab at some job out of your range. geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2006 My friend just graduated from UC in May with a degree in history. He got a got at Fidelity Investments making about 42,000 as a Retirement Specialist. It's entry level, but there's room for advancement, and they'll pay for your tuition if you go for your MBA. Almost any degree can be useful.
RepoMan 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2006 I think I'm goint to teach community college as soon I get my MS. I really don't have any knowledge of buisness. I really don't get how someone could get a job as a retirement advisor with a history degree. That blows my mind. I'm jealous but I wouldn't want to be responsiful for a persons retirement espcailly when I knew nothing about finance. I'm a real crappy interview too so I always shot myself in the foot when I look for a job. I'd have no idea how to convince a buisness that pays good to hire me.
