Let's not put our eggs in one basket yet..I do like Halak, and two goals against with less than ten to play, while not catastrophic, is enough to make me not satisfied just quite yet.

However, this should be enough to calm La Belle Province down for a bit. Give Halak the start Tuesday against Washington, but don't shell-shock him Thursday against Nashville. Maybe Halak will be the ingredient they need against the Islanders (which could be a HUGE game) on Saturday, who they always seem to lose to. After that, let's see what happens. Goaltending certainly isn't the issue in Montreal, and, regardless of how Abby and Halak handle the load this week, the Habs absolutely need a stay at home d-man by next Tuesday.

Halak will get the nod against Nashville tomorrow.

Two slumping teams will face off in Washington tonight. A Sharks loss could have a tremendous effect on the teams around them, as there's only three points between fifth and eighth. It could also allow a glimmer of hope for tied-for-ninth teams Colorado and Edmonton, maaaybe even St. Louis. Edmonton's still got five to play against Minny *thinks wishfully*.

Of course, Washington's lost four straight and are playing their third in four, in different cities no less.

Apparently Montreal is trying to get Matthieu Garon back from LA.

And also the point system is staying again for another season. Yes, they still tacked on the OT/SO loss point crap.

Sabres are getting decimated by injuries now.

At least it's the forwards this year, and not defensemen like last year. At least not yet.

The NHL GM's concluded their three-day meetings in Florida today, deciding not to change the way points are awarded in the standings. They voted against the idea of 3 points for a win in regulation, 2 for an OT or SO win, and one for an OT or So loss. Why can't they just scrap the OT loss that most fans seems to hate? See Lou Lam's quote in the article below about the playoff race and parity. It helps keep losing teams in the playoff race. I don't like the 3-pts for a win idea though, I'm with the GMs who simply want to scrap the loser point. And I guess you wouldn't need a point system then actually.

NHL GMs vote down 3-point wins

Last Updated: Wednesday, February 21, 2007 | 3:35 PM ET

The NHL will not change to a three-point system for wins during the 2007-08 season, with the league's general managers universally giving the idea the thumbs down at their annual meetings in Naples, Fla.

"We've got some exciting races in both conferences," Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said Wednesday. "The parity is great. Why change anything? I think we've had too much change of late. It's a good game. Let's enjoy it."

Speaking as three days of GM meetings wrapped up Wednesday, Anaheim general manager Brian Burke said the move didn't have any support "because it's a terrible idea."

Under the current point system, teams are awarded two points for a victory (in regulation, overtime or in a shootout). Teams still earn a point if they lose in overtime and via a shootout.

League commissioner Gary Bettman acknowledged a few weeks ago that the league's competition committee, with players and GMs as members, had been looking at the concept of awarding three points for a regulation-time win, two points for an overtime or shootout win, and one point for an overtime or shootout loss.

Some simply wanted to see two points awarded for a win and zero for a loss, whether it happened in regulation, overtime or shootout.

The decision to maintain the status quo was influenced by those who felt the NHL had instituted enough changes (foremost among them being the shootout and the elimination of the centre red line for two-line passes) after the lockout.

"It's time to establish continuity. You can't keep making changes," said Colin Campbell, the NHL's director of hockey operations. "Let' s not confuse the fans."

Trade talk dominated discussions on Wednesday. The league's trade deadline is next Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET.

"I have a better sense of the market now as I head home," said the Detroit Red Wings' Ken Holland. "The prices remain too high. Whether or not we'll be willing to pay that price next Tuesday at the deadline remains to be seen."

I'm for the 3 point win. Do whatever to make teams fight to win in regulation.

If you remove 1 points for OT losses, then teams will sit back and play for the shootout.

If you remove 1 point for shootout losses, then taking 3 lucky shots are worth 2 points in the season standings, which only further bunches the standings.

I say you dont get a point if u lose in OT, only in a Shootout.

That's a horrible idea. They may as well not play OT if that happens. Every team would just hang back and wait for the shootout. That's not hockey.

I'd prefer if you only got the one point for losing if the game ended in OT. Teams would be going crazy trying to end the game.

Also, strategy would come into play. Do you hang back because you don't want someone getting a gift point during the playoff chase? Like, say Montreal and the Isles were playing. Both teams could try to go to the shootout because they don't want the other getting a point.

You deep dished scallywag, you know that I mean only wins should benefit a team, no silly points. Bring back ties only if the fans in attendance get a full refund plus interest for having their time wasted.

No they wouldn't, they would play for the win because a shootout is a coin flip. and its 4 on 4, you cnat sit back 4 on 4.

i'm probably the only one left that wants to bring back ties

I never saw a problem with ties. They're much better then shootouts

Yah, and bad attnedance is also awesome! Lets screw overtime, less excitment for the fans!

If both teams are guaranteed a point if they play a shootout, every team in the league would wait for the shootout than take their chances in OT where they get nothing if they lose. That's why the extra point for OT losses was introduced in the first place, because teams started playing for the tie and the guaranteed point more often than they'd take their chances to get a win.

A huge home-and home series starts tonight in Buffalo between the Sabres and Senators. There will be the last two meetings between the teams this season, and the last chance for Ottawa to gain ground directly at the Sabres' expense. Currently, Buffalo is 12 points clear of Ottawa with 22 games remaining for both teams.

The Senators have a full roster after Ray Emery returned from his suspension. The Sabres, meanwhile, are missing five regulars due to injury -- RWs Ales Kotalik and Maxim Afinogenov, Cs Jiri Novotny and Paul Gaustad, and D Jaroslav Spacek are all out.

Two or three huge games in the East, in addition to the home-and-home mentioned by CC above.

The Isles and Leafs have another tilt, and they're tied for ninth and tenth. The winner is guaranteed to move ahead of Montreal for seventh by virtue of games played, but Carolina has a chance to leapfrog both teams with a win over the Flyers.

All six Canadian teams play tonight.

Grar. I really hate not being able to watch hockey.

I assume Peters killed him.
