Today is a day that sports gamers have prayed for since the fateful morning of December 13th, 2004 when EA locked up the NFL license in an exclusive agreement, effectively shutting down their critically acclaimed rival, NFL 2K.

 

Not one to go quietly, 2K Sports has announced their long rumored gridiron return with All-Pro Football 2K8, slated for this Summer and for "next generation video game systems."

 

Gamespot sat down with Visual Concepts president Greg Thomas to cover some of the more obvious challenges they will be facing in the marketplace. With no license to work with, All-Pro Football 2K8 will be facing an uphill battle for mind share when it comes to dealing with EA's unstoppable Madden series. This doesn't seem to bother Thomas as he is "expecting this game to be a big, big seller, we're expecting our fans to be really excited, and there's a lot of fans."

Hopefully this will have the greatest "create-a-team" mode on earth.

 

I dunno the route it will take though.

 

Would it be better to do like FirePro Wrestling With the WFW wrestlers and the WWC wrestlers, palette swaps of WWF and WCW wrestlers reproduced exactly, with the ability to change everything?

 

Or could they actually try to push such a deep and good "create-a-player" and "create-a-team" mode that people actually create their own teams and take them online?

 

Is people's loyalty to their own team so strong that they won't play a game without their team in it?

 

That is the question here.

Why not? Apparently the Wii isn't too hard to develop for, and its certainly in a better position distribution wise than the PS3...

 

The question will be whether or not they're going to go next-gen or just stick to Xbox and PS2 for now, while arranging for the game to work in 360's as well.

 

Then again, since the Wii is no harder to develop for than the Cube, I dunno. We shall see! Maybe my PS2 broadband adapter may get some use!!

I want a 2K basketball game for the Wii, that'd be cool having to do hand movements for shots, dunks, passes, layups etc. Anything BUT dribbling, but maybe that too?

Someone asked the question if people would feel too loyal to the real teams. I'd be one of them. This is one of the reasons I couldn't get into Blitz: The League. I don't want to play as the Miami Sharks or the Los Angeles Stars or whatever. I want to play as Chicago Bears or the San Diego Chargers.

While I agree that in a perfect world the game would have the licences, I pick the 2k engine over the NFL names every day of the week.

I'm an EA man myself (the lone exception being my purchase of NCAA 2k7 this year, I just could not bring myself to buy a game with Morrison on the cover. I tried, but I just couldn't do it) so I prefer Madden anyway. But if I did prefer the 2k engine, I still don't think I'd want one without the league. There's just something about having the actual teams and players. I don't know quite what it is, but I've never enjoyed games without licenses as much as those with.

If they added some unique stuff to the game that Madden doesn't have, for instance, delving deeper into the franchise & career modes, then I would probably be excited about it. Otherwise, I would probably be as excited about it as I am about the Madden games.

I hope this is a FirePro-esque game where they have hilarious/ridiculous/clever Japanese-sounding renames for characters obviously inspired by the NFL. "Ray Lewis" becomes "Jay Smasher," "Reggie Bush" becomes "Young Rush," "Tom Brady" becomes "Bob Glory," etc.

Somehow I doubt that'll happen, though it would kick ass. The one thing they need to fix are the logos/stadiums for PC'd teams. Those have always sucked in every 2K game (w/the exception of NBA 2K1, where they had that one smooth UNC inspired uniform/pimped out no-paint floor scheme). I don't want to play in the fucking Arachnid Dome ever again.

Hold down A and motion the controller up and down to dribble. Release A and time hitting the Z button to swap the ball from your right hand to your left. I don't know, but I'm dying for a basketball game on the Wii.

I'm very excited about this, even though this "news" is several months old. I've always preferred the 2K games since I got the first on Dreamcaston 9/9/99, although Madden was quite good this year... I may get both.

ESPN highlights, and best commentary in any sports game period. Solid graphics and movements and environments.

yea I still play 2k5 and have not bought a football game since (well I really dont feel like buying a new game every year I guess). too bad I dont have a "next gen" system, man time is flying I remember when ps2 was a nextgen thing

That's pretty much what is going to make this game a rental for me instead of a buy.

 

2K games were always a bit overrated anyway, the gameplay was better than Madden, but it's not enough of a gap that I'd sit through a game of fake players, teams and stadiums.

Solution for me is simple: Make the 2K series the Fire Pro of Football. Defaults are generic, but provide an incredibly in-depth customization feature so anybody in the know can make it an NFL game if they so choose.

 

In all honesty, I wasn't a fan of NFL 2K5, but Madden has been a bit stale to me as of late, so I welcome change at this point in time.
