The most hated family in America

Recommended Posts

It's up on youtube in 7 parts. It's about the Phelps family. It's really a shame to to see what they're doing with their kids, who are basically force fed all this hate before they even know what it means. Social services seriously need to get involved there. And I'm sure dragging them along to protests where people are likely to throw things at them (like what happens to the little boy) counts as child endangerment.

Also, LOL at the woman with 11 kids talking about the 'evils of fornication'.

Holy shit, those people can go fuck themselves. The comments they got from drivers during their pathetic little rally had me marking the fuck out.

I can't believe they can spout that shit with a straight face.

I just finished watching all seven parts of the documentary. A couple points-

-Fred Phelps never ceases to amaze me at how big of a tool he really is.

-The segment about the little kids and how they're abused is just disgusting.

-The daughters were pretty cute. Too bad they're all fucking batshit crazy.

The older girl Louis talked to at the end (Jael?) seems to be the one most likely to try and leave. She appeared to be the only one with any real self awareness, and actual doubts over the message she was spreading.

Shirley Phelps is actually more terrifying than her dad. At points in the footage she comes off as a loving mother and somewhat decent person and then they show her at funerals and her lack of regard for the pain she causes is almost sociopathic.

Theroux's great really. He really made that daughter struggle to deny she'd been tempted. The mother was a lunatic, and some of those posters could have been out of Brass Eye, they were that random. We know not all of you Americans are like this, but we like to joke that you are. The religious rhetoric was embarrassing at times.

ANOTHER Phelps thread?

What's left to be said?

I hate Michael Moore, but the episode where he confronts Phelps is hilarious

I loved that segment. That was one of maybe two or three worthwhile segments on the entire run of The Awful Truth. I like Michael Moore, but that show was pun intended, quite awful.

Now I hate Phelps as much as the next guy but....just to freshen up the subject, some conservative pundit (forget who exactly) suggested that Phelps was an Agent Provocateur...thoughts?

This is a different take on them though. Louis even admits that when you weren't talking to them about religion, they were quite nice people and he enjoyed their company. It wasn't really about Fred (he was in it for about 5 minutes in all) but about his children and thier children. It's this family that have actually been made stronger by all the hate directed towards them. And the saddest thing is the kids, who are basically trapped. I think the oldest daughter wants to leave but she's just had all these ideas of God's wrath and hellfire and brimstone instilled in her that she's too scared she'll be damned if she does.

I think this is one of those situations where it would be best just to ignore these fools. They want all the publicity they can get.

What i find as one of the saddest part of this group is there are members of this....cult, that werent raised by this crazy lady or in this family that have the same beliefs and the balls do protest also.

I also laughed pretty hard at the Bible beef that the pastor was trying to brew up with Billy Graham

I'd like to see more into the guy who went to make a doc and joined the cult. He was saying "I was very liberal and very intelligent before I came" Said he wasn't anti-gay or anything...

So what the hell happened while he was there to make him believe those people were right? How'd they brainwash him?

I also found it funny that he said he was intelligent, as if he's saying he isn't anymore.

I see these people around all the time. They picketed my friend's funeral, in fact (since he was neither gay nor a member of the military, I suppose it must have been a slow day).

They all have that strained Jack Nicholson as the Joker smile all the time, from what I can tell.

Sick bunch of fuckers, that lot. I believe in freedom of speech, but in certain cases there should also be a "freedom to whack fuckwits with baseball bats."

God damn! I wouldn't mind killing all of those fucking people. Even the kids. I don't give a fuck.

Actually I take that back. I feel bad for those little kids. Not the teenagers though.

I'm honestly not sure how much you can blame the teenagers: yeah, they've been groomed for this behaviour since childhood and have arguably been brainwashed...but on the other hand, they go to school, they socialise and have mainstream jobs, they've been introduced to alternative views and know their behaviour is considered wrong and obscene. But they still go along with it anyway. They're not forced to stay, other family memebers have left, so why can't they?

I do remember seeing something with two of the teenage girls on sky news (I think it was the two at the beginning who showed Louis their room) and they said that they weren't that bothered if their actions were approved by God or not, they still enjoyed doing it anyway.
