I just came back from the "midnight" showing, it was really good. If the first one was more kid friendly, and the second one more action and sci-fi/based, this one is definitely the artsy one and I think probably my favorite one out of the three. Has a lot of surreal and hilarious moments, including Jack Sparrow in purgatory.

 

Pretty decent ending also, good enough for it to make sequels or spin-offs or to just end it there. Definitely the best of the sequels I've seen this month.

I saw it last night and surprisingly, there was NO one in the theater. Then again, I did see it in Harlem.

 

I was confused as hell for a while but once the action scene at the end started, I didn't really care anymore. Pretty damn good with some amazing special effects. It's one of the first movies in a long time where it didn't look fake.

I saw it at 10 last night (no midnight showing at our theater, dont know why) and I loved it. I did get confused about halfway through, with the 5 or 6 main characters/groups of people and trying to figure out who was on which side, but I didn't really care, as the action was enough to keep my interest. Great movie.

However, this movie just solidifies to me how much Turner is POTC's version of Cyclops.

Basically, at the end of the credits it pops up "Ten Years Later" and you see Elizabeth walking up some hilly cliff with a small child in tow. As the sun begins to set, that green flash appears and back comes Will, looking out from the mast to see his wife and child.

Elizabeth and her son are waiting on a cliff and then Will shows up in the Flying Dutchman to meet with her for the first time in ten years.

Fuck! I should've stayed till the end of the credits. I only hung around for a bit to see who everyone was fussing about when

Captain Teague came on the screen. Apparently it's Keith Richards, who I didn't recognize with all that pirate makeup.

 

Lots of good mark-out moments, but yeah it can be a tad confusing if it's been a while since you saw the last couple movies, particularly the second. I like that there was definitely something of a complicated plot there, and just a lot of fun overall.

I thought it was damn entertaining, and more focused than the entertaining-yet-sloppy part 2.

 

Lots of funny moments, and the fight across the whirlpool was insane. Also thought the ending of Will/Elizabeth was surprisingly bold. Depp was awesome as usual, and I thought it was kooky brilliant seeing him go a little mad and how he thinks (with the imaginary Jacks).

 

Oh and we can't forget BARBOSA!!! Barbosa is awesome, the ultimate pirate, its worth it alone just to hear him do the piratey yaahahahahaa scream.

Hated it. Was way too long and the story doesn't lend itself to warrant a 2 hour and 45 minutes feature (and don't give me crap about OMG YOU HAVE ADD, YOUR STUPID, YOU HAVE NO ATTENTION SPAN!!!!1111) . Every single scene was dragged to the nth degree. Fuck this movie. Avoid at all costs. 2 is much better.

Solid popcorn flick, better than the second part, but trailing behind the first one by a long ways. Pirates of the Caribbean was a movie that didn't need a sequel, and the two sequels (thus far) are proof of it: they're solid flicks, entertaining in their own ways, but ultimately pale in comparison to the original.

 

Liked:

-Elizabeth becoming the King (er, queen?) of the pirates

-Governor Swann dying

-The Admiral sacrificing himself for Elizabeth, and then stabbing Davey Jones rather than listening to his deal

-Stone crabs

-Geoffrey Rush hamming it the fuck up as Barbosa, and making the movie 100% better than it could have been without him

-The constant twists in alliances, which I felt added a level of uncertainty to the flick, which I felt helped it

 

Disliked:

-Wow...so the swamp sorceress was Calypso...and she turned into a giant, then into a million crabs, and then created a maelstrom? That's IT?! Should've been featured at least one more time...

-The lack of study of Davey Jones' backstory, since there were only a few lines devoted to him. He's an interesting villain, not as interesting as Barbosa in the first one, but interesting enough

-Lord Beckett's death was somewhat anticlimactic, even though it fit the plot twists just fine (a final swordfight between Elizabeth and Beckett would have been much better)

-Will Turner: captain of the Flying Dutchman...yeah...alriiiiiiiiight...

Why is it that, when Will Turner's heart gets taken out and becomes captain of the Flying Dutchman, that everyone returns to looking normal and not only fucked up as opposed to when Davy Jones was captain? I thought that Turner was going to turn into some kind of Davy Jones-like creature, since they showed that Jones used to look normal before he became captain of the Dutchman.

They made note two-three times during the movies that Davey Jones did not ferry the dead souls like he was meant to do, which is why he looked the way he did. Will was just starting so he had no reason to look like a monster unless he becomes one.

They explained

that Davy Jones once looked like a normal man, but him and his crew were cursed to look like that when he stopped doing his job of guiding the deceased. The scene where all the bodies were floating, then like Elizabeth's father, lost. Had Davy continued doing that properly, he and his crew wouldn't have become all nasty and sea-like. When Will took his place, everyone was released from the curse.

Here are my thoughts with spoilers:

 

--Oddly enough some of the things I didn't like were the things Corey did like. They gave Knightley entirely too much to do in this movie....I mean WAY too much. This isn't to say she needs to be some helpless Mary Jane damsel in distress that gets kidnapped every movie, but making her the King/Queen of Pirates is fucking horrible and seems like something that would be in an ultra PC early 90s crapfest (like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves for instance). I've still yet to grasp how Elizabeth even knows how to swordfight or how a scrawny chick like her is any sort of physical force. The queen in 300 is a better example of how to do the "strong female" character without losing feasibility. And her speech rousing the pirates? Oh my god.

 

--They totally bury Gov. Swann and Norrington in this movie. It's sorta like they just ran out of ideas for those characters and said the hell with it, let them die.

 

--I can see Capt. Jack playing both sides, but Will Turner??? He's been that steady, perhaps dull, true blue hero for the series. Can you imagine Luke Skywalker making deals with Tarkin and the Emperor, then turning on them, then through circumstance ending up taking command of the Death Star and having his dad--Darth Vader--heal up magically and be at his side?

 

--Calypso....ok that did just suck. I thought Tia Dalma was a really lame part of the previous movie, and they give this character MORE to do in the 3rd movie? Hell, I assumed she'd just be in #2 and then out of the series.

 

--Geoffrey Rush was of course great here and I found myself wondering exactly what he was going to do next. The finale was hilariously appropriate. Depp was of course great as usual but is it just me or did they kinda bury him in this movie? Aside from his fight with Davy Jones I don't recall much of anything Jack did in this movie.

 

--The Keith Richards cameo....that was a lot of fun, especially Jack's "How's mum?" line.

Well he can't step onto shore but once every ten years, so that's when he was coming back to visit. That part of Davey's deal stood pact. Also, am I just imagining things or was the end child of Liz and Will the same kid who started the singing of the pirates to start the film?

It was okay. CGI was brilliant, but there was too much extraneous shit in the middle. If you look at PotC 2 and 3 as being one story, they could have cut out a lot of shit and made it one damn good movie instead of two average ones.

I thought POTC 3 was really good and better than the 2nd one. I didn't get the same feeling from the 2nd one, where they could've cut out the first hour, because in the 3rd there was so much left to be answered, plus it possibly being the last movie, it's always good to make it a long epic adventure. The final battle was great.

I enjoyed the film. I've enjoyed all three. I'm convinced that if they make a 4th and 5th and 6th I'll enjoy them. They should just release one a year until Johnny Depp is too old. I think if they make a 4th, it should be more story driven as opposed to action based.

 

Some small plot holes that I don't understand, maybe someone can explain them to me...

 

-What was with those crabs carrying the Black Pearl to sea? Just doesn't make sense that a bunch of random crabs would do that.

 

-Why didn't Elizabeth just go on the Flying Dutchman with Will? Mortals were on it before, so it could be done. If not, why not just make her part of his crew? Did it give a reason as to why she wouldn't go on the ship?

 

-If she wouldn't go on the ship, why can't Will just go visit her on land every now and then with a bucket of water on his feet, like Davy Jones did.

 

I'm sure there's more... if I think of them I'll post them later.

dumb and boring. by this point, they'd forgotten completely what made POTC unique and turned it into just another summer action movie. the comic relief in particular was pretty awful, and the story had so many betrayals and twists that it lost any semblance of people trying to outsmart each other and came off as just another gimmick.

Marked out for the ride's audio playing in the white-out scene, just as I did when in the second one they had the guys replicate the dunking animatronic from the ride.

 

I suppose the crabs helping Jack might have had something to do with Calypso? The were very cute... The girl I saw it with got appropriately misty-eyed at the kiss at the end so I suppose it hit its mark after all. Barbosa was great, and I liked Davey Jones as well. I appreciated that the Calypso/Jones thing did not end in some reunion and healing, that that ship had sailed, so to speak. I wonder if they write out Orlando Bloom for the next one, if they make one. He was always just there for these movies anyways, never as interesting as any of the other pirates...
