Canadian Brandon 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 After watching 8 seasons of Seinfeld and reruns of The Wonder Years for the past 3 weeks I have decided to write a sitcom. Anyone know how to go about getting one of these things seen or noticed? Any suggestions are appreciated.
Twisted Intestine 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 The networks usually have conventions, not sure when or where, but look it up. You can pitch your idea there. Make it an interesting pitch, and they might look further into your idea/script.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted June 8, 2007 Here's how it goes. You'll write a script, and pitch it to a producer, who'll tell you to change almost everything but a few things. You'll get a cast, a crew, and a location together if you're not lucky enough to be able to get some kind of interest from a network and be able to use a set. Then you'll go through the rather exhausting effort of re-writing your script to fit what not only the producers, but what the actors want changed with their characters, and by the time you're done it's almost entirely different (yet maybe maintaining the same "FEEL") from the original script. You'll shoot the pilot, get down on your knees and pray (and hopefully not have to do something else) that it gets picked up, and it doesn't. Repeat the process a couple more times with a different cast and crew. Your family will think you're nuts, that you're a failure. Your friends will think you gave your life away, and worry about you going broke. This isn't cheap, you know. And then, one lucky day, you'll hammer out a pilot script and an idea that sounds like shit to the general public, but you're so far deep and entrenched in the alternate reality that is Hollywood and the TV networks that you're finally seeing things their way. Your story still gets changed around. But this time, the producers will like it! You're following their lead! Good for you! And the pilot still doesn't get picked up.. for a couple more years, until someone takes a chance on it, it becomes a huge hit, then unexpectedly gets canceled mid-season in one of your more exciting years. Or, you could just go public access and ignore all that, probably.
Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 Just get a good camera and a few of your friends and shoot your script. Then post it on YouTube. You may have a better shot of being noticed.
Guest George's Box Report post Posted June 8, 2007 I had a great idea for a sitcom about a Slavic motorcyclist who gets in a horrific accident. It's called "I Hit a Pole Because I Was Rushin'."

Guest George's Box Report post Posted June 8, 2007 In week 2, he forgets to Czech his brakes, then Letts somebody else borrow his bike so he can enter a bird-throwing contest, where he throws a Croat the target and meets a cute lady: Yugo girl.

Canadian Brandon 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2007 Oy. Sounds like way too much work. Maybe I'll just pitch idea here in a couple of days. There are important producers on this board right?

Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted June 9, 2007 A sitcom isn't just something that any bozo comes up with in his head and gets paid for it, chum. You gotta work for it. Pitch an idea to us and we'll tell you if it's any good. If there's any board out there that can give a good critical lashing, it's this one, even if we don't really mean it. Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2007 There are important producers on this board right? Must... not... break into... hysterical hyena laughter... Anyway, who wants the hassle of TV? The constant impossible deadlines, the Sword Of Damocles-esque threat of cancellation at any time, all that crap. That's why I wanna work in high-budget movies, where you can spend an entire day lighting one shot of Nicole Kidman and the studio just tells ya "good job". I swear, I got this idea about a heartbreaking tale of double-starcrossed unrequited true love, set against the background of a pro wrestling company being invaded by vampires, it'll make MILLIONS I tells ya! Richard 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2007 The Wonder Years was a sitcom? Maybe the humor just went over my head.
King Kamala 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2007 The Wonder Years was a sitcom? Maybe the humor just went over my head. I'd call it a dramedy- though it was heavier on the drama than comedy.

MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2007 Tyler Perry's House of Shi..er..Payne got 6 million people to watch it for an hour on TBS..it cant be too hard to do a sitcom that would have success. Sitcoms are the next reality show..people wanna laugh!
Guest George's Box Report post Posted June 10, 2007 Tyler Perry's House of Shi..er..Payne got 6 million people to watch it for an hour on TBS..it cant be too hard to do a sitcom that would have success. Sitcoms are the next reality show..people wanna laugh! With the smothering levels of promotion it got during TNT's share of the NBA Playoffs, anything less than the whole fucking country tuning in is a failure. I mean, yowza. And what more is it than just a miscegenation of Everybody Loves Raymond and Family Matters, pre-Urkel?
Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2007 I won't be watching Tyler Perry's "Why Am I Famous?". I don't get the appeal of some dude making himself dressed up as a crotchety old woman into his entire auteur act. Eddie Murphy has been tanking his career for years doing the exact same shit. Believe it or not its the highest rated original sitcom for a cable network ever, not that theres been much to challenge it. They already have 100 episodes too, so its a good thing it didnt flop. I bet the Bill Engvall show beats it though just because the number of people that watch the comedy central specials is larger than 6 million.

Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2007 Family Matters, pre-Urkel?
King Kamala 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2007 IIRC, the first season of Family Matters didn't have Urkel on it. He debuted during the second season and even then, it took him a bit to become a regular.
Canadian Brandon 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2007 Ok...just a synopsis. Two life long friends embark on their journey to college. Randal, our main character, is more concerned with meeting women than his studies. Kal, the supporting best friend of Randal didn't even want to go to college but was convinced by Randal to "enjoy the experience". After a dorm mix up, the two friends are split up. Kal, who is a bit of a neat freak, gets stuck with a pot smoking, obnoxious, and very unorganized fellow named Jeffery. Randal, however, hits the jackpot. Due to a large mistake, he is roomed with the beautiful Maria. The pilot deals with Randal and Kal's adaptation to college, their roommates, and their new life in general. So...it's kinda sloppy right now, but alot of funny dialog and situations have come out of the plot. Thoughts? Suggestions?
Dandy 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2007 To be honest, I would need to hear more plot details thatn that. That is the setting, not what would happen. Have you mapped out several episodes, or would the premise pretty much be dead after 2 shows?
Canadian Brandon 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2007 It's not really a plot driven show. Just good situational comedy. But yeah, we have the pilot almost completely written and a few pages full of ideas for more scripts.

Dandy 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2007 We should right out instrumentals for songs and see who can guess what song it is. Do it Czech. DO it.
Guest George's Box Report post Posted June 17, 2007 That might be a fun game if I'm totally bored. My big music idea for the board was to mix as many songs as I could with "Tell Me When To Go," but I got bored after "All Along The Watchtower," "With or Without You," and "Meet the Mets." But did you get the song above? If not, this whole exercise would be pointless, because that was a big ol' softball I lobbed there, in terms of syllabic notation. Guest George's Box Report post Posted June 17, 2007 Awesome. I hope Canadian Brandon got it, too! Also, what kind of hedonistic university allows co-ed rooms in the dorms? Floors, yes, but actual rooms?
