1. Mesa came in after the disaster and immediately walked the first batter on four pitches. That's maddening.

 

2. Mesa sucked four years ago when his meltdowns cost the Phils a division title. He's four years older and still sucks. There's no reason to carry a washed up pitcher with a 5.65 ERA on the club. It would be more efficient to put Shane Victorino on the mound and have him lop baseballs into the outfield.

I just returned from the Baseball Game of the Year.

 

Oh my God what a rollercoaster.

 

HOLY SHIT I'm so pumped. I'm furious about certain pitchers, and WHY THE FUCK THEY PULLED ROMERO for The Fat Men Who Can't Pitch, but goddamn if it didn't end like a Disney movie.

 

I'll say this though, I don't entirely hate Mets fans, they were their in force, were passionate, even more so than the other games in the series.

 

The Phillies fans give pinch hitter Marlon Anderson a standing ovation.

 

The Mets give Alfonseca a standing ovation and chant his name.

Thank God the Mets only have 3 more games with the Phillies and after the weekend 3 with the Braves. The September schedule may save this team with games with Nats, Marlins, Astros, Reds.

Wagner went two innings. He gave up three hits in the ninth, all singles. It's not like they teed off.

 

Al, the closer's job is to make sure he gets the save. That is his job. If he does not get the save -- rather, if he blows the save -- then he is not doing his job. It does not matter the way he does it. It does not matter if he gave up a homerun or he issued five walks in a row or he gave up three singles. If he does not close the game, then he did not do what he was paid to do. Period. And besides that, I would think giving up three hits in the ninth would actually be worse than giving up only one homerun for a loss. At least with the homerun, you could argue he made one sloppy pitch and that single mistake cost him the game. With the three singles, there is no defense. He had his worst stuff, he wasn't tricking any of them out there, and as the season gets closer to an end, he is becoming increasingly more unreliable. Is he going to blame this on his "dead arm"? Perhaps. Well then, he shouldn't be out there closing until he's healthy, because it's becoming a detriment to the team.

You're forgetting when Pat Burrell teed off on him in the 8th and hit another clutch home run off him.

 

Wagner: "Ah er duh uh he uh has one swing I uh threw it there".

 

Let's be real here, though. Billy Wagner is, IMO, the best closer in baseball. There's a few pretty good closers, though, so I say IMO. Today was just a game between two teams who refused to go down and the Phillies snuck out with the last at bats.
