College student tasered at Kerry speech.

Well it's really easy to take down someone when you show them the teaser trailer for 'The Dark Knight' and 'Indiana Jones and whatever the hell George Lucas's gardener thought up'.

"Don't tease me bro!"

Not once

Teasers are a very safe method of stopping force.

Not twice

police were called in and used a teaser on him to arrest him

Three times

How did you guys let this one get away

It is sort of like calling somebody in the middle of a debate for forgetting to use a comma. It really has nothing to do with anything except to distract from the topic at hand.

Then again the tiny details is kind of YOUR gimmick.

That's a rather tenuous connection there

I would have ignored one simple misspelling, however three misspellings (defiently misspellings) of a rather key word to this whole thread combined with the context coming from said misspellings was just too good to pass up.

It really has nothing to do with anything except to distract from the topic at hand.

Oh, lessons in CE thread derailing from Cheesy.

Maybe if I threw in some gratuitous ad hominems instead?

Entertain me. By all means.

I thought I was being complimentary there too... go figure.

Don't tase me, whippersnapper!

CHICAGO (AP) ― Chicago's Police Department is investigating an officer's use of a Taser on an 82-year-old woman who police say was swinging a hammer when they arrived.

Lillian Fletcher was rushed to the hospital after being jolted by the Taser last week, but has since been released, police said Tuesday.

Workers with the city's Department on Aging were making what is called a "well being check" at Fletcher's home on the city's southwest side the afternoon of Oct. 29, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

"The woman was seen at the window with a hammer in her hand, swinging it back and forth," Bond said.

The social workers called police. A landlord opened the door with a key and when the officers stepped inside, the woman was swinging the hammer, Bond said.

Not knowing if Fletcher was going to hurt herself, the officers tried to subdue her.

That, Bond said, is when a sergeant discharged a Taser, which struck Fletcher. Bond said the department is investigating whether the sergeant followed proper police procedures.

On Tuesday, Fletcher said officers had pushed their way into her home. "They shocked me," she said.

Fletcher's granddaughter told the Chicago Sun-Times that Fletcher suffers from schizophrenia and dementia. On the phone Tuesday, Fletcher at times sounded confused.

"She can be belligerent," Traci Taylor told the newspaper, adding that her grandmother is 5-foot-1 inches tall and weighs no more than 160 pounds.

"I just don't think they should be Tasing 82-year-old women," Taylor said. "That's ridiculous."

Tasers use compressed nitrogen to fire two barbed darts that can penetrate clothing to deliver a 50,000-volt shock to immobilize people.

Touted by law enforcement officials as less lethal than other ways of subduing combative people in high-risk situations, the weapons have come under fire around the country after they were blamed for several deaths.

In 2005, then-Chicago Police Superintendent Phil Cline temporarily suspended the distribution of stun guns following the deaths of two people after police shot them with Tasers.

Today, about 150 field training officers are set to be issued new Tasers and about 200 sergeants have had the weapons for about five years, Bond said.

You know, she probably started talking about a time where cops didn't watch people, they just watched over people... and at that point, the cops just decided to put her out of her misery.

The cops were in a lose/lose situation with the old lady. If they try to physically disarm her, and she falls over and breaks her hip, they'll be portrayed as horrible monsters who beat up an old lady. If they let her swing that hammer around, she might hurt an officer or hurt herself, and they'll be portrayed as slack-jawed gawkers. If they use pepper spray, they will have pepper sprayed an old lady. Tasering maybe wasn't the right thing to do, but all of the options they had could have led to disaster.

Agreed. When dealing with someone with mental illnesses like schizophrenia, they're so unpredictable and so far removed from reality that there's absolutely no way to reliably control them. I assume that the officers would've tried talking first and told her to put the hammer down, and got nowhere. But if you can't reason with her, what the hell can you do to a geriatric that won't hurt them? Even if one of the cops just stepped forward, trusted to blind luck that she wouldn't bash him in the head, and pulled the hammer out of her hand, it could've easily broken her wrist. The police are kinda fucked from the start in situations like this, because like he said there's no good option.

That being said, no, they shouldn't have tazed her. You can just look at most 82-year-old women and guess that they've got a heart problem of some kind, and you'd probably be right. People that old are precisely who tasers shouldn't be used on, because the inherent risks go way up in that age bracket. I still don't know what the best alternative course of action would be, though.

I don't think it would have been too difficult to physically control her WITHOUT taking her down and having her break a bone or worse.

And here is a story of how cops need to behave:

Last night at Book Revue in Huntington, Sean Hannity’s program director Phil Boyce (he of Promise Keepers, the wives submit or get hit group of the early 1990s) tried to have me arrested because he didn’t like the question he thought I was going to ask Sean Hannity. Boyce called the cops on his cell phone, two policemen showed up, asked me to come with them, and a couple of hundred of Hannity sycophants cheered, clapped, and a few shouted arrest him as I walked toward the bookstore exit at the direction of the police officers. Full details will follow after the flip but the key points to remember are that no personnel of the book store ever asked me to leave while in the store, I behaved superbly and remained calm and cool at all times, and of course I committed no crimes.

The place was packed with about 1500 people. (still less than 1/10 of 1% of the LI population) This is Sean Hannity’s hometown area, his base, etc… plus he had his turd blossom Mark Levin with him.

About 5 mins after arriving at the bookstore, one of the managers (I’m withholding his name, he did tell me) came over to me and said that you must be the “big guy” and that he and the staff read what I posted on DK yesterday and that they really appreciated it. He also told me that NOT ONE staff member wants “these people here.” He said I was welcome at the store and again was appreciative of my level headed advice for any other people that would show up. I’ve been there many times before, I was easily recognizable.

Hannity spoke a little and then the Detestable One, Mark Levin, spoke about his dog book. I positioned myself to be in the path as he exited from his speaking spot to his book signing spot. As he came by I offered him recruitment forms for the military and asked him, “Hey Mark would you like to join the military?’ He said, “Oh I know you” He then calls me a dope and says, “I’ll go if you go.” So I took him up on it. I said, “Make you a deal, if we can have it arranged that we get sent to Afghanistan only and pursue Osama Bin Laden, I’ll go if you are going with me.” (I would honor this offer.) He got irate not thinking that I would actually take him up on that offer. I implored him to go sign up with me.

While standing in the audience I got to hear the insanitized yell, scream, insult, show their insanity, etc… According to the insanitized Democrats are Islamocrats, Clinton sold nukes to China, there were WMDS found in Iraq, I’m a communist, Bill Clinton is a traitor and scum, Bush has been great for the economy, etc… Also, one guy asked me if I had parents and said that they made a mistake by having me. (How pro-life) Other insults hurled my way included calling me dumber than a rock, a douche, etc… None of these responses were reciprocated in kind. Instead, I would give jovial responses like “Brilliant of you sir, how very pro life” or “Yep I have an IQ of 70, 2 + 2 = 7,” etc…

As I moved closer on the lines toward Hannity who was signing autographs, Phil Boyce came over. Instead of approaching me Phil Boyce (who is a good 6 ft 5 and bigger than me who is 6 ft 3 and not skinny) approached a conservative wingnut near me and said, “Are you the guy who asked Mark Levin if he was going to join the military? Boyce was in his face and the guy is denying it so I said, “I think you mean me. I’m the guy who asked Mark that question.” At the time Phil Boyce was wearing a Mark Levin stalker fan club T Shirt. Boyce had a beard.

Boyce gets in my face and says to me, “You’re not asking Sean Hannity that question.” I said, “You’re right I think I have another question for him.” Boyce said, “Well what it is.” I said, “I have an idea but I may change my mind by the time I get up front so I don’t know yet.” Boyce responds, “Well leave the store or I’ll have you arrested.” I responded, “I have a right to be here. The manager said I could be here. You don’t work for the store so you have no authority to tell me to leave.” I also said that if somebody who works for the store tells me to leave I will gladly do so and invited him to bring over the owner or manager of the store if that’s what he wanted.

Boyce then proceeded to call the cops on his cell phone. (Not a wise move) Apparently he told the cops that I was “causing a disturbance” and “refused to leave private property.” Boyce said that the cops are coming to arrest you and I said, “Ok if they do I’ll sue you.” Boyce responded, “I don’t care, I have lawyers.”

A few minutes later two police officers arrived, came up to me, and said, “Can I speak to you for a moment?” I said, “sure.” They asked, “What’s the problem?” I said, “I have no problem. I’m here at an event and nobody from the bookstore has ever asked me to leave.” They then said to “come with us” and as I started walking the Hannity sycophants cheered, clapped, and a few shouted “arrest him.” Hannity sat there smirking with Boyce at his side.

The cops went outside with me, asked for my license, and spoke with me. They even asked me if I had ever been arrested. I told them that I’ve been here over 2 hours, behaved all the time, mentioned the anecdote with the manager, and that Boyce and Hannity want me kicked out because they don’t like my questions.

The cops got the owner of the store to come out. The owner confirmed that I caused no problems nor any disturbances despite Boyce’s claims to the contrary and that he the owner had security personnel around the store at all times and that the security was instructed to notify him or the police if anybody was causing a problem and that none of them did. (This is a key little fact.) The owner and I agreed at that point that there’s no need for me to come back in the store tonight and I suggested just say you don’t want me back tonight and I have to oblige. The owner followed my lead and the cop just asked me if I was getting out of here and I said I’ll be out of town in 3 minutes. The officer wished me a good night. The Hannity onlookers who came outside were pissed that I was NOT arrested. However I was falsely imprisoned for a few minutes and slandered because of Phil Boyce, who had actual or apparent authority on behalf of Sean Hannity and/or WABC Radio.

Some additional thoughts.

First, there are instances where cops inject their personal biases, lose control, lie, etc… everyday in this country. In this instance the two Suffolk County police officers did a TERRIFIC and PROFESSIONAL job. They did their due diligence, kept their calm, ascertained the facts, figured out what was going on, and responded lawfully and professionally at all times.

Second, there is something very disturbing about people who would cheer and clap to have you arrested simply because they don’t like your politics. But that’s Hannity’s America, it sure as hell ain’t mine.

Third, I am contemplating legal action against Phil Boyce and those entities responsible for Boyce’s behavior. I want to do further research before deciding what to do.

Fourth, these cowards like Hannity, Boyce, and Levin can’t handle debate and dissent. They operate in a world where they manipulate images, take sound bites out of context, cut people’s mikes, keep informed voices off the airwaves, etc…

Fifth, the stupidity of these people like Phil Boyce amazes me. One, if you wanted somebody to leave, you probably could have gotten the store security or the store owner to get someone to leave. Two, you are a moron for calling the police on your own cell phone. If you’re going to do that, you should have used a public store phone so as not to have the call traced to your records. Three, you’d be better served by having waited for me to ask whatever question I would have asked up close before taking action. Not too smart, pal.

Finally, this story needs to be told notwithstanding that I’m the subject matter of the story. The idea that leading conservative media voices would try to arrest a person simply over a question is appalling and unAmerican.

A good story, indeed. I did notice that they didn't do anything to him. Then again, he didn't resist at all, which is really the most important fact of the case. If he had started, you know, pushing his way back into the store or something, we might have an accurate comparison here.

Moral of the Story: Act civil, as this guy did, and the cops will treat you with civility. If you escalate things, don't be surprised when they escalate with you.

That's not even vaguely comparable to the DTMBro. This guy was apparently doing nothing wrong. I do wonder what the ranger's motivation for arresting the guy was, the way the article

was written they didn't even ask the officer or anyone else what their side of the story was.

Don't know if anyone posted this yet..

An eyewitness's video recording of a man dying after being stunned with a Taser by police on Oct. 14 at Vancouver International Airport has been released to the public.

Robert Dziekanski is jolted by a shot from an RCMP Taser.

(Paul Pritchard)

The 10-minute video recording clearly shows four RCMP officers talking to Robert Dziekanski while he is standing with his back to a counter and with his arms lowered by his sides, but his hands are not visible.

About 25 seconds after police enter the secure area where he is, there is a loud crack that sounds like a Taser shot, followed by Dziekanski screaming and convulsing as he stumbles and falls to the floor.

Another loud crack can be heard as an officer appears to fire one more Taser shot into Dziekanski.

As the officers kneel on top of Dziekanski and handcuff him, he continues to scream and convulse on the floor.

One officer is heard to say, "Hit him again. Hit him again," and there is another loud cracking sound.

Police have said only two Taser shots were fired, but a witness said she heard up to four Taser shots.

Robert Dziekanski falls to the floor as an RCMP officer looks on.

(Paul Pritchard)

A minute and half after the first Taser shot was fired Dziekanski stops moaning and convulsing and becomes still and silent.

Shortly after, the officers appear to be checking his condition and one officer is heard to say, "code red."

The video ends shortly after.

Minutes later, ambulance attendants arrived but their efforts to revive Dziekanski were unsuccessful and he was declared dead.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Dale Carr said no one can judge what happened to Dziekanski by just watching the video.

"It's just one piece of evidence, one person's view. There are many people that we have spoken to," RCMP spokesman Cpl. Dale Carr said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Four RCMP officers subdue Robert Dziekanski after stunning him with a Taser on Oct. 14 at Vancouver airport.

(Paul Pritchard)

"What I urge is that those watching the video, take note of that. Put what they've seen aside for the time being. And wait to hear the totality of the evidence at the time of the inquest," Carr said.

But retired superintendent Ron Foyle, a 33-year veteran of the Vancouver police who saw the video tape, said he didn't know "why it ever became a police incident."

"It didn't seem that he made any threatening gestures towards them," Foyle said.

Much of the video was shot through the glass walls that separate the international arrivals lounge from a secure area outside the Canada Customs exit.

The video was recorded in three segments. The first segment shows Dziekanski before police arrive.

He is clearly agitated, yelling in Polish, and appears to be sweating. He can be seen taking office chairs and putting them in front of the security doors. He then picks up a small table, which he holds, while a woman in the arrivals lounge calmly speaks to him in apparent effort to calm him down.

Before police arrived, Robert Dziekanski picked up a small table and put it in the doorway between the customs exit area and a public lounge.

(Paul Pritchard)

In the second segment, Dziekanski picks up a computer and throws it to the ground. Three airport personnel arrive and block the exit from the secure area, but Dziekanski retreats inside and does not threaten them.

Officers arrive in lounge

Then four RCMP officers arrive in the lounge. Someone can be heard mentioning the word Tasers.

Someone replies, "Yes," as the officers approach the security doors.

Police have said repeatedly that there were only three RCMP officers involved in the incident, but the video shows four men in RCMP uniforms.

People in the lounge can be heard clearly telling the police Dziekanski speaks no English, only Russian. His mother later said he only spoke Polish.

Police enter the secure area with no problems and can be seen with Dziekanski standing calmly talking with officers. They appear to direct him to stand against a wall, which he does.

As he is standing there, one of the officers shoots him with a Taser.

RCMP officers have also said police did not use pepper spray because of the large number of people at the airport at the time. But the video shows Dziekanski standing alone with the four officers in an otherwise empty area, which is separated from the public area by a thick glass wall.
