NHL Sept/Oct 2007

Why was there an extra leaf player on the ice? Toskala was still in net, and you can't put an extra player on a three on three.

Right.

But it was a three on three before the penalty. If there is a penalty during a three on three, the penelty would start once the first penelty expired or have been scored on.

I don't think that's how it works.

Well, if there's a 3-on-3 for the last two minutes, why wouldn't you just continually commit penalties until time expired, since you couldn't possibly be put a man down? That's why I can't see that being the rule.

I know, but that should not give Toronto an extra man, or a Montreal have two man short, and the rule book doesn't say anything either.

I'm 99% sure that's the rule, and NHL referees aren't just going to make something up on the fly.

Anyway, that was a pretty good game and putting Ponikarovsky back with Sundin and Antropov was a smart move.

It's in the rulebook. In 4 on 4 overtime, if a team would be reduced below 3 players for a penalty, the other team gets an extra man instead. If the penalty is killed off, at the next stoppage both teams lose a man (the penalized team would wind up with an extra man too once the penalties are over) and play resumes 4 on 4.

Of course it's in the rule book, don't you think one of the dozens of sites that keep NHL score reports would have said something if it wasn't? It's not like it's the NHL on-ice officials are the inept ones of the bunch.

Except that one that was told to have another donut.

So hey, while I was watching the Cubs lose, and then bitching about it here, apparently Patrick Kane scored the game-winning goal in the shootout to give the Hawks a 4-3 win over the Red Wings. Well hot damn. That's how you open a season at home. I'm tellin' ya. Big things. This cheers me up a little bit.

The extra man during a power play when it was originally 3 on 3 has been in place since they NHL brought in the 4 on 4 overtime. Can't believe this is the first you guys have noticed this

As big as a Habs fan as I am, I'm getting sick of the Carey Price hype. I mean potential is one thing, compairing him to Ken Dryden is a little too much right now.

The league should really go to a 70-75 game season.

So who will win the scoring title this year?

Heatley? Statsny? Crosby?

Two home games and two shutout victories for the Blue Jackets. Pascal Leclaire has just been remarkable so far this year, fielding a total of fifty-nine shots thus far and allowing no goals.

Great work so far, but the victory they let slip through their fingers in Minnesota has me reserving my excitement for now, since every other year has been sabotaged by the Jackets' inability to win on the road.

I'll throw my homer opinion in and say Henrik Zetterberg if he keeps up his blistering pace and stays injury free. They've already thrown Hank back on the first line in certain situations and he plays the PP as well. Once Datsyuk gets it going (tonight was a good start), the sky is the limit.
