MLB Off-season Thread

Recommended Posts

Will Carrol says the deal is done and its Lester, either Coco or Ellsbury (he reported a CF), Masterson and Kallish.

If the CF isn't Ellsbury I might kill myself.

good. you're a morally bankrupt dickface.

Santana to Twins all but done. .

holy shit!

on an unrelated note, it looks like my cabrera to the tigers pipe dream is over before it began.

Actually, it looks like Miguel Cabrera is going to the Tigers.

According to Steve Phillips.

Holy shit. It's official.

Miggy and Train to the Tigers for Miller/Maybin and 4 prospects.

:(

My cabana master is gone.

But that's the only rumored deal I actually liked.

And yet to everybody's dismay, Jeff Loria's team will still sweep the Cubs and finish in fourth place.

The Tigers gave up quite a bit but hey, the time to win is now. By the time Maybin and Miller get to where they need to be, a lot of the Tigers' core players will be too old.

That Detroit trade is amazing.

Inge to the Phillies now, maybe?

great trade for both teams. i like both teams. arguably the tigers much more. but big time happy.

i think the tigers soured a bit on both maybin and miller over the past year. there's no way they would have done this two years ago. and willis and cabrera are still young. are the tigers now the team to beat?

I think the Tiger pitching sucks other than Verlander. Bonderman sucked last year. Rogers is old. Willis hasn't pitched well in a while, and Robertson is alright as a 5th starter. But that offense will be great.

Cabrera is a much bigger catch than Willis, of whom I'm growing increasingly skeptical, but still, what a coup by Detroit. Damn. Tigers/Indians is going to be one fun race to watch.

So this guy that the Cubs got in return for Infante and Will Ohman, whose name I do not know, has one of the best fastballs in AA. Well hot damn!

Look at this lineup.

All statistics are translated and from the 2007 season.

1. 2B P. Polanco (.490 OBP)

2. SS E. Renteria (.401 OBP)

3. RF M. Ordoñez (1.090 OPS)

4. 3B M. Cabrera (1.003 OPS)

5. CF C. Granderson (.964 OPS)

6. 1B C. Guillen (.913 OPS)

7. DH G. Sheffield (.894 OPS)

8. C I. Rodriguez (.744 OPS)

9. LF J. Jones (.732 OPS)

I know they'll never actually do the lineup that way -- can you imagine Sheffield at 7? He'd shit.

Also, they are not smart enough to put Granderson (that dude slugged almost .600 last season!) at 5. He's too fast/toolsy for them to acknowledge that he ought to be in the middle of the lineup instead of at the top.

If I were them, I'd also sit Jacque Jones right on his ass. Ryan Raburn hit .308/.348/.541 in 133 AB last season and had a 118 Rate2 in left field. Fuck Jacque Jones. Put Raburn in, bat him 8th, and move Pudge to 9.

That's a sick lineup.

It's going to be more like:

Curtis Granderson

Edgar Renteria

Magglio Ordonez

Miguel Cabrera

Gary Sheffield

Carlos Guillen

Marcus Thames

Placido Polanco

Pudge Rodriguez

No way in hell Polanco is 8th. He hit .341 last season (non-translated) and had the lowest K% of anybody in MLB.

If anything:

Renteria

Polanco

Granderson

Ordoñez

Cabrera

Sheffield

Guillen

Thames/Jones

Rodriguez

Wouldn't surprise me if they did

3. Granderson

4. Sheffield

5. Ordoñez

6. Cabrera

just so Sheff doesn't shit his pants and throw a fit like he, a small child, tends to do pretty much all the time he doesn't get what he wants.

Polanco ain't going to hit at the top if Renteria is. And Granderson is leading off no matter what. He had a tremendous season. You can't have Polanco at like 2 and Sheff at like 6 and Guillen like at 7. What the hell is that?

I thought batting order had a negligible effect. Leyland can draw the day's order out of a hat and be in good shape. Well, not good shape physically, because there's a good chance that at least one of his lungs is completely composed of tar, but his team will win many games.

Hey, so the Dodgers got absolutely nothing I wanted this summer. Guess that's a good thing, as long as they don't do some dumb shit like trade Matt Kemp for a 3rd starter.

I don't know. I think when a guy gets on base 49% of the time (translated), he should be at the top of the lineup instead of the bottom. I guess I'm just silly like that.

Some people have said that. I don't think it makes much sense but they used math to prove it, I think, which is worth more than my sense.

That being said, I don't see why you shouldn't at least try to maximize runs. It's the Pascal's Wager of baseball: if it doesn't matter how you draw up your lineup, then there is no harm in drawing it up in the way that seems like it would maximize runs - put your top two OBP guys first and second, and then go down from OPS with #3 on. But if it does turn out that lineup can affect runs production, then you're in good shape.

No-lose situation doing it my way.

granderson

polanco

cabrera

ordnonez

guillen

sheffield

renteria

thames/jones

rodriguez

you never know what else the tigers have up their sleeve. maybe inge stays at 3rd, cabrera to lf.

or what inge will get them.

and don't insult this staff. bonderman got hurt. he was 8-0 to begin the year. rogers is still servicable as a 4th starter with 12-14 wins. robertson can be .500...sometimes better.

the only thing that hurts is the loss of zumaya. maybe the inge trade will take care of that.

Translated? WTF? Is that like a WORVPTBNL stat or something?

Bonderman got hurt? He always falls apart in the 2nd half of the year. You should trade for Harden and have him pitch the 2nd half of the year.

No.

Quote from Baseball Prospectus:

Converts the player's batting statistics into a context that is the same for everybody. The major characteristics of the translation are: 1) that the translated EQA should equal the original, all-time adjusted EQA (within some margin for error); 2) that all seasons are expanded to a 162 game schedule; 3) that the statistics are adjusted to a season where an average hitter would have, per 650 PA: 589 AB, 153 H, 31 DB, 3 TP, 19 HR, 56 BB, 5 HBP, 113 SO, 10 SB, 5 CS, 79 R and 75 RBI. His rates would be a .260 batting average, .330 onbase average, .420 slugging average, and a .260 EQA with 76 EQR.

Hopefully you see why this is more useful when comparing players as opposed to using the original statistics (or worse).
