Alex Rodriguez to opt out of Yankees Contract

Again there's something wonderful with the whole Yankee fan mindset. "Win at all costs," so you build a team with hired mercenaries. Then feel betrayed when one of those mercenaries leaves for more money. This is nothing fans of the Royals, Orioles, etc. haven't experienced before, only on a larger scale.

Most hated ex-Yankee? I honestly can't think of a former Yankee who is truly dispised by the fanbase, outside of Jeff Weaver. It's a shame because Rodriguez hasn't made himself a menace to society or broken any laws. He's just a baseball player.

I'm a die hard Yankee fan since I was born, and I hate that they sign mercenaries. I think Steinbrenner is an idiot, and I would hope that others do too.

But off the top of my head I can't think of someone who is really hated by the Yankee fanbase.

Don't go making blanket statements about Yankee fans. Racist.

The Yankees are a racist team. They don't concetrate on the little things. The little things that win ball games. If the Yankees bothered to pursue African American players, then they could have speed and steal some bags.

The Yankees really miss Gary Sheffield.

From Newsday:

Despite all of the back-and-forth posturing between the Yankees and A-Rod' camp, the Daily News learned today that the two sides have been discussing a deal for the past few days to keep the two-time MVP in pinstripes, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The biggest catch? The Yankees don't want agent Scott Boras involved in the negotiations.

A high-ranking Yankees source told the Daily News that the team is willing to bring Rodriguez back on a below-market contract, one that would make up for the $21 million subsidy from the Rangers that the Yanks lost when A-Rod opted out of the final three years of his contract.

"We will not negotiate with Scott Boras," a Yankees source said. "He cannot be in the room."

The Yankees are also aware that Boras could convince Rodriguez to stop the talks. "We realize it could be a trap to get us back in the negotiations," said one Yankee official. "But we don't think that's the case."

Rodriguez apparently approached the Yankees through a third-party intermediary. "He went to them," said the source.

"Alex is going to be back with the Yankees," the source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been made public. "The Yankees don't have a choice. How are they going to compete without Alex? They need him back."

Sounds like it will be a ten year deal worth between $275 and $290 million. That's about double what the Red Sox were (or were prepared to) offer, so the whole "coming back at below market value" is kind of face-saving statement. I think Boras, A-Rod and the Yankees all misplayed the market for Rodriguez's services. In the end, the Yankees need a 3B and A-Rod needs the Yankees.

Oh, and Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Yankees are still going hard after Mike Lowell with the intent of playing him at 1B. Don't know if they legitimately want him there or they are trying to run up the price for the Red Sox, but an interesting turn in this saga nonetheless.

Some of the other sites out there are killing this guy on nyyfans named frostdude1. Doesn't he post here too?

EDIT: I knew it. He was the guy that posted like 20 gay pics of A-Rod after he hit his 500th homer.

What was that guy doing? I really hang in the Out Of Play and History forums, but what is he, anti-ARod?

I don't want to go to the bother of transcribing them here, but he basically had posts saying that Yankees looked brilliant in all of this and that Hank Steinbrenner was showing his genius as the new leader of the Yankees.

Way to stick to your principles Yankees! I guess "under no circumstances" doesn't really mean what I thought.

Works for me if he's back in pinstripes for the next decade or so. Let them have all the egg on their faces that they need in order to get him to stay.

Goodbye and Good Fucking riddance.

Whoops.

Does Boras have any other Yankee clients?

I know Damon is one, and Matsui might be also, but I'm not sure. Bernie Williams was a Boras guy as well.

This is basically the same offer the Yankees gave him before he opted out, except that it's two years longer (including the 21 million from Texas). So technically he's under market value, although we may never know what his value really was.

The Yankees offered him a 5 year extension for $150 million on top of the 3 years and $81 million owed. That includes $21 million from Texas. Essentially, the whole package would have been 8 years and $210 million out of the Yankees' pockets. This new deal is presumably going to be ten years at a $275 million base that could go to $300 million with incentives. According to my math, they might have cost themselves as much as $90 million.

I don't think they are getting him at a below market value. Of course we have no idea what happens in private negotiations, but the buzz seemed to be a 5 or 6 year deal at $25 million per was about all the market could bear.

Boras has done it again. Taken a market with no real offers or bidders and turned it into the single largest contract in MLB history. Unreal.

That's what you have to sign up for though, if you want him at 32.

Someone said in the offseason thread that you have to give up anything for Santana, because he is the best that there is. So, shouldn't the same apply here? And we aren't even talking about selling the farm, we're talking about millions upon millions of dollars that none of us here are paying, for the guy who may be the best player of all time.

I just think it's funny that so many Yankee fans who were ready to drive A-Rod to the nearest airport to get him out of town are now in love with him possibly returning after "disrespecting" the team by opting out. It's just such a bandwagon move.

I know we're talking about the Yankees here, but will they now spend the $20 million a year for Johan? Or another $15 million on Lowell, if they are still aggressively pursuing him?

Yikes, more A-Rod. I guess it was foolish of me to expect a turn to a new style of Yankee team, but hey... I'm not gonna complain too much about the possible return of one of the greats.
