"Win at all costs," so you build a team with hired mercenaries. Then feel betrayed when one of those mercenaries leaves for more money. This is nothing fans of the Royals, Orioles, etc. haven't experienced before, only on a larger scale. Most hated ex-Yankee? I honestly can't think of a former Yankee who is truly dispised by the fanbase, outside of Jeff Weaver. It's a shame because Rodriguez hasn't made himself a menace to society or broken any laws. He's just a baseball player.

He's just a baseball player. I'm a die hard Yankee fan since I was born, and I hate that they sign mercenaries. I think Steinbrenner is an idiot, and I would hope that others do too. But off the top of my head I can't think of someone who is really hated by the Yankee fanbase.

The little things that win ball games. If the Yankees bothered to pursue African American players, then they could have speed and steal some bags. The Yankees really miss Gary Sheffield.

The biggest catch? The Yankees don't want agent Scott Boras involved in the negotiations. A high-ranking Yankees source told the Daily News that the team is willing to bring Rodriguez back on a below-market contract, one that would make up for the $21 million subsidy from the Rangers that the Yanks lost when A-Rod opted out of the final three years of his contract. *** "We will not negotiate with Scott Boras," a Yankees source said. "He cannot be in the room." The Yankees are also aware that Boras could convince Rodriguez to stop the talks. That's about double what the Red Sox were (or were prepared to) offer, so the whole "coming back at below market value" is kind of face-saving statement. I think Boras, A-Rod and the Yankees all misplayed the market for Rodriguez's services. In the end, the Yankees need a 3B and A-Rod needs the Yankees.

That includes $21 million from Texas. Essentially, the whole package would have been 8 years and $210 million out of the Yankees' pockets. This new deal is presumably going to be ten years at a $275 million base that could go to $300 million with incentives. According to my math, they might have cost themselves as much as $90 million. I don't think they are getting him at a below market value. Of course we have no idea what happens in private negotiations, but the buzz seemed to be a 5 or 6 year deal at $25 million per was about all the market could bear. Boras has done it again. Taken a market with no real offers or bidders and turned it into the single largest contract in MLB history. Unreal.

Someone said in the offseason thread that you have to give up anything for Santana, because he is the best that there is. So, shouldn't the same apply here? And we aren't even talking about selling the farm, we're talking about millions upon millions of dollars that none of us here are paying, for the guy who may be the best player of all time.

It's just such a bandwagon move.
